S.O.S TANZANIA Tanzania's 100 or more different tribal groups are mostly of Bantu tribal origin. The Arab influence on Zanzibar and Pemba islands is evident in the people, who are a mix of Shirazia (from Persia), Arabs, Comorians (from the Comoros Islands) and Bantu from the mainland, though the latter predominate. Asians are a significant minority especially in the towns and cities. Europeans (either by descent or expatriate) are a smaller minority. The major non-Bantu people on the mainland are the Masai (Nilotic speakers) who inhabit the north-eastern section of the country. Swahili and English are the official languages, with English the principal language of commerce. There are also many local African tongues, reflecting the tribal diversity of the country. Outside the cities and towns, far fewer local people speak English than in comparable areas in Kenya. It's said that the Swahili spoken on Zanzibar is of a much purer form than elsewhere, and quite a few travellers head for the island to learn it. The two main religions are Christianity and Islam, with Hindus making up about a quarter of the population. The majority of Muslims are concentrated along the coast and in the islands. Compared to Islam, Christianity took a long time to make an impact, and even then (during the 19th century) it was practiced mainly among tribes of the interior. There are still many tribes who follow neither of the big-name religions and instead worship the ancient spirit of their choice. Principal among them are the Masai, who put their faith in the god Engai and his Messiah, Kindong'oi, from whom their priests are said to be descended. It's claimed that there is no religious bias present in the country's political and civil administration.

Mauritius is a beautiful island with charming villages, impressive mountains and some of the finest beaches and aquamarine lagoons in the Indian Ocean. Holidaymakers, who can summon up the energy to depart from the sun-kissed, palm-fringed beaches of Mauritius, will find an abundance of activities to keep them occupied. The island is famed for deep-sea fishing and there are many scuba diving centres. Five golf courses set in impressive locations mean that golfers are similarly well catered for on the island. - - n a v i g a t o r - - Zambia Kenya Namibia South Africa Tanzania Zimbabwe Botswana Indian Ocean Islands Click here to view

SOCIETY AND CULTURE
Comoran society and culture reflect the influences of Islam and the traditions of East Africa. The former provides the basis for religion and law; the East African influence is evident in the language, a Swahili dialect, and in a number of pre-Islamic customs. Western, primarily French, influences are also prevalent, particularly in the modern educational sector, the civil service, and cultural affairs. Data as of August 1994

new internationalist January 1985 COUNTRY PROFILE Comoros Islands Leader President Ahmed Abdullah. Economy : GNP per capita US S267 per year. Monetary Unit : CFA Franc. People Health : Infant mortality 280 per 1,000 live births. Culture : Arab. Swahili coast and Indian Ocean peoples. Religion : Sunni Islam. Languages derstood and taught in Koranic schools. Islanders speak a Comorian dialect of Kiswahili. But the palm-fringed beaches, so soothing to the tourist, conceal another country with far more desperate laws of survival. With 200 people trying to scratch a living from every kilometer, the Comoros Islands is the most densely populated nation on earth. The bobbing dhows are filled with imported rice, which the mountain poor cannot afford to buy. Despite abundant fishing grounds, most of the countrys supply is imported from Madagascar and onions are so expensive they are sold singly in the market of Moroni, the capital. Since the peasants cannot eat the perfumes which cover a third of the land, nearly half their children suffer from malnutrition. In 1983, there were only 17 doctors for the entire 365,000 population. With no press and no opposition party, the Mosque remains unchallenged as the most important influence on Comorian thought and values. Although entirely responsible for food production, women have no place in the village committees.

The fourth annual staging of Robot Wars last year was marred by a civil lawsuit between the organizer and his partner. Whether or not there will be another Robot Wars remains unclear, so the organizers of Robotica have planned a battle of their own and most of the toughest duelists seem ready to attend. While Robotica is invitation only, spectators, as well as volunteers, are encouraged to apply, with forms available from the event's Web site. Internet islands: The residents of the Comoros Islands in the Indian Ocean were hooked up to the Internet for the first time last week, thanks to a US$200,000 project sponsored by a branch of France Telecom and the state-owned Posts and Telecommunications company. Sixty individuals and companies have already signed up for the service, which will cost $19 for the Internet connection and $12 per month. This is one of the cheapest rates in the Indian Ocean, but still well out of the reach of most ordinary Comorans. Economic conditions on the Comoros Islands have worsened over the past year, and many public service workers have been unpaid for months.
