Goal:
You will learn how to solve math word problems using the four-step method.
What is a math word problem? A math word problem is a real life situation that requires math for the problem to be solved. For example, every time we spend money, we are presented with a math problem.
How does the four-step method solve math word problems? Word problems in math can be confusing. Solving problems requires performing several actions. There are four steps:
Step 1: Understand
What is the problem? What are you asked to do?
Step 2: Plan
What do you need to do to solve the problem? Choose a problem-solving strategy.
Step 3: Work
Carry out the plan. Do any necessary calculations.
Step 4: Answer
What is your answer? Is it reasonable? Does it really answer the question?
Buying a Computer System
Most math problems require attention to detail. Setting up and buying a computer system requires attention to the details of printed sales material, such as cost and what the parts or components do. Let's look at an example of a math word problem that deals with buying a computer system. For now, if you do not know any of the abbreviations or acronyms in the problem below, don't worry. We explain those in the

Below is a computer components table with a description of the components and their prices. This table, along with the description of the components, will help you answer a series of mathematical word problems related to assembling and buying a computer system. Be sure to read each question carefully, look at each part of the question for the information you need, and follow the four-step method to solve the problems.
Component Descriptions
The CPU (central processing unit) is the "brain" of the computer. It controls all the action inside a computer. MHz stands for megahertz and, for now, all you need to know is that the greater the MHz the faster the computer. Memory is measured in megabytes (abbreviated MB). The more memory your computer has, the faster it can run. The hard drive is where your programs are stored. The greater the disk space, the more programs you can have. The standard size for a hard drive now is about 15 gigabytes (abbreviated GB). Once again, more is better.

Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some questions that our keyboarding experts have been asked many times in the past.
When should children begin learning keyboarding?
Teachers' opinions often differ on this subject. This question can be divided into two distinct issues, "When is a child ready to begin learning to keyboard?" and "When should keyboarding instruction begin in schools?" A child is ready when he or she is able to move his or her fingers independently on command, and has shown an interest in using the computer for something other than games. Teaching keyboarding in elementary school has become an important issue because of the increasing presence of computers in the classroom. Teachers are under pressure to use the computers in their classrooms and the most obvious use is for writing. Keyboard instruction should precede any alphabetic entry activities. Ideally, students should be taught how to properly operate the keyboard before they have developed poor keying habits using a hunt and peck” system of fingering. Word processing should not be done before the student has learned which finger is to be used to strike each letter key.

Use Keyboard to Spell Shortcuts on Computer March 22, 1999 By: LAWRENCE J. MAGID I 'm a big fan of anything that lets me work less and accomplish more. That's why I use keyboard shortcuts on programs I use regularly. I've created even more shortcuts by using the macro feature in Microsoft Word and, thanks to QuicKeys ($49.95) from CE Software it's also possible for both Windows and Mac users to automate virtually any task.
Although using the mouse to select icons and menu items is easy, sometimes it's even easier to use keyboard shortcuts to perform certain tasks. You can copy a selection of text from one file to another, for example, by selecting copy from the Edit menu. But in most programs you can accomplish the same thing by typing Ctrl C in Windows or Command C if you're using a Mac. Windows users can use the File menu to exit a program, but pressing Alt F4 can get you out faster and even exit you from Windows itself. If you make a mistake while typing, Ctrl Z will undo what you just did. For more Windows shortcuts, visit http://www.larrysworld.com/shortcuts.htm

by
John M. Zeigler and Namcy L. Ostromencki
Preview In the first article in this series, we took a look at how you can enhance your knowledge and enjoyment of music through the use of "music appreciation" software on your computer. However, we hope you will find yourself wanting to make music yourself someday. Your home computer can also help you learn about making and playing an instrument. In this article we'll talk about some of the software that is available to help you learn to play; computer software may not be a replacement for the time and commitment of a private teacher, but it can be very helpful, especially for busy professionals with limited time, and even fun. If you've ever wanted to learn about music in more depth or to play an instrument, read on. We'll take you on a tour of some of the best software of this type available. The Computer as Instrument About Software There is a large volume of mostly good software available for various aspects of musical training. Just as there are fewer packages available for instruments other than keyboards, there are fewer readily accessible sources of unbiased reviews of the software. However, at least with respect to keyboards, music education, and music concept software, our sister site

Michelle Conda, University of Cincinnati Martha Hilley, University of Texas Fred Kern, University of North Texas Kenon Renfrow, University of Miami Moderator: Andrew Hisey, Oberlin College Conservatory of Music The First National Group Piano and Piano Pedagogy Forum opened with a session featuring five group piano experts discussing how they adapted their curriculum to the size and nature of their institutions. After the panelists described their individual situations, they fielded questions from the audience. Michelle Conda shared her views on the importance of including non-major group piano class as a course in a university. Her past experience at the University of Toledo demonstrated that there was a high demand for non-major classes. She initially started off with the beginning level and within a few years had expanded the course sequence to four levels. All four levels of piano classes were filled every semester. The high demand also occurred when she offered non-major piano classes at University of Cincinnati. She stated that teaching these classes was extremely rewarding. She also pointed out that non-major piano classes were useful to some music majors as well; these classes could serve as preparation for music majors who were not ready for standard music classes. They could also be used as group teaching demonstration classes for piano pedagogy students.

The only way to learn keyboarding is through practice, and the Ainsworth Keyboard Trainer will put you through the paces.
Dick Ainsworth is enjoying his retirement by living in the country and writing whatever software and computer books he feels will make a difference.
His latest help to new computer users includes the Ainsworth Keyboard Trainer, a typing program to help people communicate better and master their computer's keyboard. This program is designed to help you become proficient at keyboarding, and to help you work smarter as well as write better. The Ainsworth Keyboard Trainer is a plain, basic program. No fancy screens, no animation, no fluff, yet it has everything necessary to learn keyboarding.
All it takes is the one CD that comes with the Ainsworth Keyboard Trainer , a commitment to learn, and your enthusiasm. Soon your fingers will be trained to go where they are supposed to go. This software program can teach the novice how to type as well as increase skills for typists of all levels. Ainsworth is thorough; he stretches your knowledge to include the entire keyboard, which means numbers and symbols as well as letters. Get ready for lessons that will teach you to type, drills to improve your speed and accuracy, and tests to measure and record your progress. It's not all work and no play. The Type-Oh! games get you thinking and typing at the same time. Program-generated reports document your progress and help you recognize your own strengths and weaknesses. Well into the program, the Ainsworth Conversation Piece and Ainsworth Writer work on improving communication skills.

  • The auto-accompaniment style keyboard is probably the best for all round usability. Depending on it's specifications, it should be loud enough(eg.15 watts) to be heard in an average sized classroom and therefore be useful to accompany singing or drama. If it has the GM specification it will have it's 128 sounds (patches) to play around with. The auto-accompaniment facility means that not only can different styles of music be applied to live situations but when composing and/or recording onto a computer music sequencer, these styles can supply a "quick fix" arrangement as distinct from laying down one sound-track at a time. Click on the styles below to get an idea of what can be heard on some of the Roland keyboards. Each style may also have one or two variations for inserting into a bridge or chorus. I've included these in the examples below as well as some endings.

Make lessons motivating and necessary to the student.   Most students already use a notetaker for their word processing needs, teaching MS Word to word process might not be very motivating.  However, all students need the use of the Internet for research and personal entertainment, so that might be a better place to start computer lessons.  It is important to remember that all lessons will involve computer navigation, opening and closing applications, and accessing on screen text. In addition to improving the workstation design at home (consult Children and Safe Computing, by Maureen Clancy , to learn the correct setup for your child): Encourage regular breaks from the computer to stretch all upper body muscles, including the eyes. If children use the computer for a long period of time without taking a break, they are at great risk for developing a repetitive strain injury. Use a timer or install software to alert your child to take a break to stretch every 30 minutes for one minute. Stretching not only relaxes tired muscles, but also brings them necessary blood and oxygen. Protect children's vision by providing soft light, encouraging the use of large font sizes, and visiting an eye care professional regularly. Provide tools that fit children's hands. A smaller keyboard is better for some children, and some like to use a trackball rather than a mouse. Logitech and Kensington make a small mouse and a trackball with a small ball. The Goldtouch keyboard is an excellent option for children as well as adults. Datadesk also makes a smaller keyboard, Little Fingers, that includes a trackball. (See Resources for suppliers.)
