What is Computer Generated Art? Are you a photographer? Are you an illustrator? Are you a painter? Are you or did you follow one of these professions before starting to use the computer? I have met many people over the internet through my articles and tutorials. Many are "old timers" like me who started to work before computers were easily available. I have observed that most "old timers" bring their former artistic profession or hobby into his art work. I have noticed that artists who work mainly in the 2 dimension realm, use either Painter or Photoshop as their primary program. A number have added Deep Paint as a bridge since it can be used as a Photoshop plugin. I was reading an article in a 3D magazine the other day that discussed the present state of 3D art. This article got me thinking that too many people use the computer to create technical masterpieces that say nothing. Yes, I know this statement will annoy people, but all one has to do is thumb through a graphic magazine and count the number of clocks ticking in someone's brain. No, I do not appreciate some of the art in the Guggenheim or Museum of Modern Art in New York City where I grew up. A "white on white" canvas still says to me white.

I you could help please do. DANIELLE I think computer generated art is a perfectly legit medium. Colleges are accepting this as well. I just graduated from college. New classes were being "made up" every semester to nurture the interest of students who saw the potential of virtual art, but were not willing to go into graphic design. Classes like digital painting and digital collage combined studio and graphic design techniques. Some ppl will argue that the computer is not a tool for making art. This arguement is foolish. Since the beginning of time, artist have used technology to open the doors of artistic expression and perception. Because of strong student interest, colleges are creating new areas of study. This is a very exciting time in the art world.

Computer generated images (cgi) do not all have to be screenshots of mystical science fiction movies. I enjoy doing artwork with a computer because of the capability to sculpt, paint, draw and "chisel" on the same piece and not leave too large of a mess to clean up when I'm through. CGI work may never get the classification as "real art", but I certainly gain the same satisfaction and fulfillment when I finish a computer-aided piece as when I've done a sketch or oil. Underwater Scene (hey...it could be Deep Cold inspired?!) Joshua is one of the original 'Blackats' and a huge help with the game. His computer generated art is the first art that was not commissioned, but rather inspired by the storyline and setting of "Deep Cold". I love what he has done, especially in the first terrain pic showing the blinding whiteness of sun and snow (there are special rules for 'snow blindness' in the game by the way!) The second terrain pic is my favorite of all the pictures and is an outstanding sunset over the reborn world.
