A Message from the President of CCTE
The Optimistic Cynic
I've always thought of myself as an optimistic cynic, one who hopes for the best but expects the worst. It certainly has come in handy these days teaching English in Connecticut. By now most language arts and English teachers in Connecticut know that grammar will count forty percent of the Connecticut Mastery Test Writing Score. Forty percent! Last summer I dove optimistically into the fray. Surely the Commissioner and the State Board of Education would listen to reason when the three major language arts organizations in the state - the CCTE, Connecticut Reading Association, and the Connecticut Writing Project at Fairfield - united against their proposal. Right? Wrong! The issue wasn't really grammar! That was only for the newspapers and the public. The issue was mostly test reliability. It was certainly convenient for the State Department of Education that the multiple-choice items it needed to stabilize the CMT Writing Sample happened to be grammar questions. Grammar provides a wonderful diversion, with its associations of Mom and apple pie. There is a knee-jerk, rally-round-the-flag emotional reaction one can count on with grammar that one can't with other language arts issues, let's say, reader response or deconstruction. It gives Craig Toensing, the State Board Chairman, the license to play upholder of tradition when interviewed by the Hartford Courant after the vote. He claims it was a spelling error in an e-mail from an English teacher that convinced him to support the 60/40 split. The teacher had been urging him to give less weight to grammar than forty percent.

Resources are listed only if they are open to children of all races and religions. Why homeschool? Homeschoolers learn more and play more. Homeschooling is less stressful for the entire family. No homework, rushing for the bus, or excruciatingly long days sitting at a desk. Homeschoolers have lots more time for fun things like soccer, playing with friends, special classes, volunteer work, or using their imagination. The average homeschooler is ahead by one grade in the elementary years and by eighth grade is four years ahead. Homeschoolers took first, second and third places in the 2000 National Spelling Bee. Some people complained that homeschoolers had an "unfair advantage." It's true, and not just in spelling, but in all subjects! Life is less hectic and centered on the family's needs, instead of on the school's needs. Parental authority is not superseded by school administrators. Homeschoolers get lots more individual attention.

Connecticut Celebrates Family Education Day
Parent Involvement Online
According to a recent survey prepared by the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education, “The number one method of using technology (in the state’s schools) for communication between parents and staff was the World Wide Web.” The majority of the school districts throughout Connecticut have indicated that they see the Internet as a powerful communication tool to increase parent involvement in their schools. If you think families in your community would benefit from being able to access your school's lunch menus, homework assignments, calendars of upcoming events, and PTA news by getting online, you may want to learn more about how FamilyEducation Network can help schools and parents connect easily, effectively, and exactly.

In Part 2 of "Is the Superintendency in Crisis?" Education World examines how a new generation of superintendents might handle the challenges of adversarial school boards, special interest groups, financial constraints, and more. Three experts offer their points of view. Read Part 1 of this two-part series: Two recently published national studies from the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) take a close look at the state of the superintendency. The school superintendent's job has become tougher and increasingly more challenging in the past 20 years, said Susan Moore Johnson, author of Leading to Change, The Challenge of the New Superintendency
