  • The Conservative Party Archive Introduction The Conservative Party Archive (CPA) was established as a source for academic research at the Bodleian Library , Oxford in 1978. The transfer to the Bodleian Library was suggested by Lord Blake, historian of the Conservative Party and, at that time, Provost of The Queen's College, Oxford, and Lady Young, who was in 1978 Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Party and an honorary fellow of St. Anne's College, Oxford. Before this, Conservative records had long been divided between the Conservative Central Office (CCO) in London and Newcastle University Library. Here, however, the papers were consolidated, catalogued and administered by an archivist within the Library's Department of Western Manuscripts.

    Questions and Answers
Here, we attempt to answer your questions, as well as some rhetorical ones thrown in. Care to submit a question What is a Conservative?
Well, according to the dictionary, conservative means: "tending or disposed to maintain existing views, conditions, or institutions", "traditional", "marked by moderation or caution", "marked by or relating to traditional norms of taste, elegance, style, or manners" (Merriam-Webster, 1997). The distinguishing characteristic of the conservative is that he wishes to conserve that which is good about the past and present, and cautious to adopt unproven new ideas at the expense of proven standard ideas. The conservative is usually dedicated to the conservation and expansion of great institutions, be they political, religious, or of any other variety. How is the term "conservative" used politically?
Throughout the political organizations of Western Civilization (including the U.S.) the term "conservative" has come to embody many of the central characteristics of classical liberalism: freedom, liberty, small government, strict construction, capitalism, and the rule of law. This is probably because conservatives are in the position of defending the great achievements of Western Civilization, made through the successes of classical liberalism. In studying the history of political thought, it is important to note how the usage of the word "conservative" has changed; for instance, John Stuart Mill condemned conservatives, and yet his writings embody the spirit of modern conservatism.

    March 3, 2003
During this period any public communication that reaches 500 people in an area in which a candidate is running can be ruled a coordinated public communication if it is made by an individual or organization that has had a discussion with the candidate, any one associated with the candidate, or is in contact with or assisted by any of his agents or anyone associated with his political party or any vendor, employee or independent contractor who has been associated with the candidate, his campaign or political party. This is dangerous stuff. To see just how dangerous, consider the following possible scenario: Sound bad? Well, it is, but if the authors of this legislation have it their way, it could be even worse. Under their interpretation of the law they helped McCain write, it might not even be necessary to name the candidate or the party to find oneself on the wrong side of the feds. The sad fact is that neither Congress nor Bush stood up for the constitution when they had the chance. So now it is up to the courts.

    Political Parties in Japan
Most part of this page is an excerpt from Japan: A Pocket Guide, 1996 Edition , pp.12-18 (Foreign Press Center). Additional notes were written around 1998 by MK . Japanese political situation has been dynamically changed since then. The first political party to emerge in Japan was the Aikoku Koto (Public Party of Patriots), formed in 1874 under the leadership of Taisuke Itagaki. The party presented a written petition advocating the establishment of a parliamentary system through public elections. In 1898 a cabinet was formed by the leader of a party for the first time, inaugurating the system of party cabinets. But genro , or elder statesmen, although lacking any constitutional authority, exerted a decisive influence in determining transfers of power, and it was not until after World War II that true party cabinets began to be formed. Currently Japanese political alignments are undergoing a vigorous transition that has resulted in the emergence of a number of new parties. The following traces the development of the main parties.
    The Liberal Democratic Party
The Liberal Democratic Party, the biggest political party, is a conservative force. The party regards the protection of liberty, human rights, democracy, and the parliamentary system as its fundamental mission. The LDP was formed in November 1955 through the merger of two conservative parties founded after World War II and continued to govern without a break until August 1993.
