Visit To Iraq Blasted ROLL CALL, The Newspaper of Capitol Hill October 3, 2002
By Ethan Wallison If Democrats fail to win back the House, it's likely that some in the party will look for the seeds of defeat in a late-September weekend in Baghdad, where visiting Democratic Congressmen asked the world to put faith in the word of Saddam Hussein.
"It's just a disaster," said one top Democratic official, who requested anonymity. "Even the average person who doesn't believe we should go to war in Iraq is bound to see [the visit] as support for an enemy of the United States. And those who support the president on Iraq will think it's treasonous." Members and strategists are still sifting through the fallout of last week's visit to Iraq by Reps. David Bonior (D-Mich.), Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) and Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) - already known collectively as the "Baghdad Three" in some leadership circles. But among the Democrats who fitfully monitor the party's prospects for success this November, one verdict is already in: The visit, during which two of the Members openly questioned the Bush administration's Iraq policy, wasn't helpful. "It was extremely harmful and destructive," said one top leadership aide who worried whether Democrats in marginal districts would be able to distance themselves from the words and actions of their colleagues. "It showed incredibly bad judgment.

S ince our founding convention in October, 1997, the ARP has progressively worked to expand our reform network. We have established an organization and a political committee that is democratic, "grassroots," bottom-up controlled and dedicated to the same principles that we all believed in back in 1992 and '96. Ross Perot was certainly our founding father, but he has become a "special interest" all of his own. When we discovered other "special interest" groups operating within the national party, we had no choice but to officially separate from those influences. W e are dedicated to providing the organization and vision that will cure this country of its partisan gridlock and move it into the next century.

Who’s Who of 19 th century.
Thurlow Weed was America’s first great financial services lobbyist. His political involvement in the 19 th century was so pervasive it is hard to measure. His name shows up with such historical figures as John Quincy Adams, Abe Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, Zachary Taylor and William Seward. To say he got around would be an understatement. How did he do it? He was the first to recognize the importance of mixing fundraising, public relations and party building to attain his political goals. He didn’t just hand out campaign contributions; he built political parties. The sheer magnitude of his work makes him important to anyone who wants to understand lobbying in America. H.L. Menken traces the first American usage of the term “lobby-agent” to Albany, N.Y., in 1829. Newspapers shortened the term to “lobbyist” to describe those representatives hanging out in the lobby who sought special treatment for their clients. Weed was there from the beginning.

John McCain belongs to our oldest political party-the party of Teddy Roosevelt and FDR, JFK and Ronald Reagan-the Patriot party.
By Noemie Emery
This article originally appeared in The Weekly Standard Who is John McCain, and what is his magic? Traditional terms don't explain the stampede. He does not fit neatly in the right-to-left spectrum, but is de facto head of the Patriot party-a dominant force in American politics, though one that is not easy to explain. It is an idea, but not an ideology; a principle, but not a program; a concept adaptable to various creeds. It is not even precisely a party, but a force that moves from one party to the other. Through the centuries, it has passed back and forth between the two parties, making the one it inhabits the governing force in the country. Few presidents have reached historic stature without being in it; without it, no party can govern too well or for too long. It has no health-care plan, no tax proposal, no 10-point programs. But it does have a platform, and these are its planks: America is not merely a country; it is also a cause and a principle.

Britain A - Z Search FAQs Advanced Search Currency, VAT, Customs and Excise Customs, Holidays and Traditions Education ... back to Government What are the origins of the names of the main political parties? E-mail this page Print Version The Conservative and Unionist Party dates back to the Tory Party of the late eighteenth century. This party broadly represented the interests of the country gentry, merchant classes and official administerial groups. After Britain’s 1832 (electoral) Reform Act, members of the old Tory Party began forming ‘conservative associations’. The name Conservative was first used as a description of the Party in the Quarterly Review of January 1830 – ‘conservative’ because the Party aims to conserve traditional values and practices. The term ‘Tory’ is still used today to refer to somebody with conservative political views. The original title of the Labour Party, the Labour Representation Committee, makes the origins of the party clear – to promote the interests of the industrial working class. In 1900, the Trades Union Congress co-operated with the Independent Labour Party (founded 1893) to establish The Labour Representation Committee with Ramsay MacDonald as First Secretary. The name Labour Party was adopted in 1906. The Liberal Party emerged in the mid-nineteenth century as a successor to the historic Whig party. In the late eighteenth century, the Whig Party represented those who sought electoral, parliamentary and philanthropic reforms. After 1832, increasing numbers of middle-class members joined the mainly aristocratic Whigs. By 1839 the term Liberal Party was being used, and the first unequivocally Liberal government was formed in 1868 by William Gladstone. In 1988 the old Liberal Party and the Social Democratic Party merged into a single party called the Liberal Democrats.
