The Stars
Lifecycle Nuclear Fusion ... Clusters of Galaxies
A galaxy is a huge group of stars, dust, gas, and other celestial bodies bound together by gravitational forces. There are spiral, elliptical, and irregularly shaped galaxies. Galaxies contain anywhere from 100,000 to 3,000,000,000,000 stars. There are three major types of galaxies: spiral (with arms), elliptical (no arm), and irregular (without rotational symmetry). Galaxies radiate a continuous spectrum of energy. Some radiate radio waves, X rays, and infrared, and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The Earth Sun and the rest of our solar system are a tiny part of the Milky Way Galaxy , a spiral galaxy. The Milky way Galaxy is just one galaxy in a group of galaxies called the Local Group . Within the Local Group, the Milky Way Galaxy is moving about 300 km/sec (towards the constellation Virgo).

I. Survey of Astronomy (K-3rd)
This is our basic planetarium program, suitable for grade levels K-3. The show's story of Sol and visual effects make it more appropriate for students from kindergarten through third grade. Topics covered include the telescope, the Moon and its phases, eclipses, seasonal constellations, a brief tour of the Solar System, and the nature of stars, meteors, comets, and galaxies.

These are my top picks as far as astronomy/astrophotography books go. I have linked the books below to Amazon.com for your ordering convenience. Books Author(s) Comments Terence Dickinson NightWatch - If you could only get one astronomy book, this is the one you should get. It is well written and is a great source of information for the beginning amateur astronomer. The one thing I really like about the book is Terence's ability to explain astronomy concepts in a manner that everyone can understand (even young adults). It starts with learning to find your way around the stars and introduces the different types of telescopes. It also gives an introduction into the world of Astrophotography. The book is ring bound so is easy to use under the stars. Robert Reeves Wide-Field Astrophotography - If you are just getting involved with astrophotography this book is an excellent source of information. Wide-Field astrophotography is a great first step for any one starting into this area of astronomy and Robert Reeves explains the ropes from the basics to the advance topics. Terence Dickinson Alan Dyer The Backyard Astronomer's Guide - This is actually the book responsible for getting me into astronomy. I went to the bookstore to find something to read in an attempt to get away from watching too much TV. This book is an excellent addition to Nightwatch. It talks about many of the same topics but in more detail. It covers telescope equipment, accessories, Astrophotography equipment, and observing techniques. I go to this book more often than any other that I have. It is a great resource of information for just about any astronomy topic (but curiously, not CCD imaging).

    Constellations
A natural human tendency is to see patterns and relationships between objects even when no true connection exists, and people long ago connected the brightest stars into configurations called constellations, which ancient astronomers named after mythological beings, heroes, and animals - whatever was important to them.
Early astronomers had very practical reasons for studying the sky.
