Conures can be found in most of South and Central America. Some species are also well represented in the West Indies, as well as parts of Mexico. In the wild conures are friendly, peaceful birds and seldom fight with each other. They live together in groups of twenty or more birds, even during the mating season, and feed on various seeds, fruits, and insects. The Many Types There are five genera of conures. A brief description of each follows: Genus Aratinga This is by far one of the most popular genus of conures. Conures!! Species: There are many different species of conures. The majority fall into the genus Aratinga, along with several in the genus Pyrhurra . The others are Nandayus , which is only a single species, the Nanday conure, Enicognathus , which includes the Slender-billed and Austral conures, and Cyanoliensis , the Patagonian conure. Some sources feel that some other well-known conures (including the Half Moon, Blue Crowned, and others) may also fall into genuses of their own. All conures have long tails and originate from South and Central America; also Mexico. There was one Conure, the Carolina Parakeet, that actually lived in North American as far north as New York and Chicago; however this bird went extinct due to hunting and habitat destruction in the early 1900's. Conures range in size from as tiny as 8 1/2" to up to 21"! Life span: Most conures live around 15 to 35 years. Price: $100-$500 or higher for rare species. The majority of species fall in the $200 to $400 range. Diet: Conures aren't picky about their foods. Being enormously curious and playful, they like a very varied diet and should be provided with foods that offer a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. Pellets that come in different shapes and colors are often preffered over "plain" pellets. Conures are prone to "Conure Bleeding Sydrone", which is thought to be caused by a lack of Vitamin K, which is found in foods like broccoli. Cages/supplies: Conures are active and playful birds, who need a large cage to clamber around in. A large cockatiel cage will do for the small conures, the others will need a good-sized parrot cage. Be careful where you place those perches; if those long conure tails rub against the bars the tail feathers will become very ragged. Give your conure lots of toys, it will use them with gusto. They like toys they can destoy, but make sure there's no small parts they can swallow or openings where they could catch a claw or beak. Your conure will also appreciate a large playstand, again, equipped with lots of toys.

From the brilliantly colored Sun to the subtle yet beautiful Dusky, there is a wide range of colors and different personalities of each species to enjoy. Conures can always be depended on to be a lot of fun. They enjoy a good assortment of toys, especially the ones with bells, beads and untreated rawhide strips. Be sure the toys you pick are appropriate for the species of Conure you have. For instance, a Mitred would need a lot sturdier toy that a Maroon Belly. Conures also love swings and toys to climb on. In addition they enjoy toys that can be chewed up and destroyed, such as colored soft wood toys for the smaller birds and harder wood for the bigger ones. Experiment to find out your bird's particular preferences and needs. You can expect your Conure to be with you for quite some time, seeing as their average life span in captivity is about 30 years, providing they are cared for properly. A seed diet is not enough, it lacks Vitamin A and Calcium among other nutrients. We recommend a pelleted diet, bird pellets being available at most pet and feed stores. We at Ruffled Feathers Aviary, however, believe that a diet of about 10% seed is necessary, if anything because the birds love to crack seeds so much. Pyrrhura Conures as House pets We have two Green cheeks (Pyrrhura Molinae). The first one we bought just over a year ago as a twelve week old hand reared bird (hand reared birds are taken from the nest at a very early age, they are fully bond with their human foster parents) Ann named him Konrad. His first few months with us were turbulent to say the least. His continual biting seemed incurable, but with time, training and care he is now virtually cured. Our second joined the family three months ago, he has an uncertain history having passed through the hands of several owners then arriving here with his wings clipped awfully and a toe missing which had been bitten off by an Amazon Parrot. We called him Jeffery after a family friend (human) who also has a way of getting out of tricky situations reasonably unscathed . Most of these charmers have terrific personalities. Almost all my handfed conures like to cuddle and do tricks. They usually learn to talk fairly easily, though they don't have the clearest voices or the largest vocabularies. Conures are classified in 3 main catagories: Aratinga Nandayus and Pyrrhura I specialize in Pyrrhura conures because of their quieter personalities. They are smaller than their Aratinga cousins, usually 8-9 inches long. Most people will find greencheeked and maroonbellied conures to be readily available in the pet trade. They are very similar in appearance and are curious, spunky birds, though they are usually shyer than their cousins. If you don't mind a little noise, the flashier Aratinga conures, such as the Sun conure, can make excellent pets as well. In fact, most handfed conures often do not scream like their wild caught counterparts or will learn to talk instead. They range from between 10 to 17 inches in length and usually have red, orange, or yellow on their bodies. They usually have very clownish, boisterous personalities, but they like to cuddle too. The Nandayus Nanday conures have a bad reputation because of the many flighty, loud wild-caught birds that people have had as pets. However, people who have handfed Nandays say these 12 inch parrots are entirely different birds. They can make terrific pets, have a sweet personality and are usually quieter than wild-caught birds. (The Nandays I've had have still been fairly vocal, so be sure you can handle some noise before purchasing one!) They are still one of the cheaper conures, and people who don't mind taking a chance have ended up with wonderful pets.

Conures Head bobbing anyone? Sun Conure Conures are yet another popular parrot kept as a pet. There are several subspecies, and consequently several color variations to the conure. Orange Fronted Conure Background of the Conure The conure is native to several areas of South and Central America, including Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, Amazon Range, Guyana, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Paraguay. There are sereral subspecies of conure, with the Red-masked being the nominate species. In the wild, they live in flocks feeding on seeds, millet, blossoms, and fruits. Red Masked Conure Physical and Personality Characteristics The conure is a medium sized bird, being a bit smaller than an African Grey. They havelong wings and tails, and come in a variety of colors. The basic body color of the conure is green, and is usually blended with one or more other colors. Conures can be loud birds, and have a moderate ability to speak. One behavior noted to conures is head bobbing, which is how I've been greeted by conures on numerous occasions. They are good pets, and can bond to humans quite well. Most do not chew as much as Macaw's or Grey's. Nanday Conure Feeding and Accomodation Conures require a large cage, and a "T" stand can be quite helpful as well. The larger parrots should spend as much time out of their cages as possible. Cage dimensions should be at least 3'X 3'X 4', with several differnet size perches. Sturdy toys are needed, since the conure has a powerful beak. They are great chewers, but they need some entertainment.

They were previous classified as genus Conurus (from the Greek: Kone (cone) and Ourus (tail-bearing), which translated as having a cone-shaped tail. Their scientific classification has changed, but the name "conure" has stayed. Quirky Conures By: Monica Conures are beautiful and intelligent birds found in many sizes and colors from lush green to brilliant yellow, red, blue, orange, brown and white. A conure's natural habitat ranges from Mexico to Central America to the Caribbean and South America. They are a smaller version of the Macaw. They have a fully feathered facial area (say that five times fast!) and a high pitched unclear voice. However they can, with patience and proper training learn a few words! Conures need adequate cages that are large enough so the birds head does not touch the top of the cage and their tail does not hit the bottom. Your bird must be able to move around freely. You should also have two perches, one up high for your conure to roost at night and one near his water, food and gravel cups. The bottom of the cage should be lined with newspaper or bedding such as ground corn cob or pine shavings. Remember that if you use newspaper it must be changed daily for sanitary reasons and corn cob and shavings will be messy so be prepared to use the vacuum daily! Keep in mind your caged conure will need to be entertained at times so the toys you pick will have a positive affect on your bird. Artificial bones and metal bells are a few examples of toys available for your quirky conure. Wood perches are great but don't be surprised to see your feathered friend chew them up. You may use real branches but beware of poisonous ones! Apple and pear branches are safe.
