When the Cook Islands was actually settled is unknown but achaeological digs put Rarotonga at 1500 years ago and Pukapuka at 2400 years ago. Cook Islanders are believed to have come from a place called Avaiki. To find out more about the history of the Cook Islands contact: mandy@cookislands-library.org.ck Geography
The Cook Islands lies nestled between the islands of Tahiti (1 hour flight) and Fiji (3 hour flight). The easiest way to locate it on a map is to find Hawaii, and do a mirror reflection of Hawaii over the equator. There are 15 islands in the Cook Islands, divided up into two groups: the Northern and Southern Groups. Southern Group: Popn (1996 census) Rarotonga (capital) Mangaia Mauke Mitiaro Atiu Takutea Manuae Aitutaki Northern Group: Suwarrow Palmerston Nassau Pukapuka Manihiki Rakahanga Penrhyn Source: Annual Bulletin June 1999, Statistics Office, Rarotonga. In its entirety, the Cook Islands has more ocean (2.2 million sq. km) than land (240 sq. km) space.

Throughout the year there are a number of events that Cook Islanders participate in and that you could be a part of. Dancer of the Year
The best Cook Islands dancers (male, female, children and visitors) come together to show off their ura (hula) dancing skills and costumes. If you wish to join the next competition, contact the Tourist Authority tourism@cookislands.gov.ck Song Quest
Once a year, the search is on for the best Cook Islands vocalist and groups. Miss Cook Islands
This competition is now held every two years because of the difficulty in finding girls to take part and insufficient funds/sponsorship. Kumete Sports
Normally held in the first week of June to celebrate the Queen's (Elizabeth) birthday, participation by the villages in the Kumete Sports has declined over the years. This event may dissappear in the next few years if interest cannot be revived. Visitors can just join in on the day, just ask someone to guide you to the team leader. Sports include: tug-o-war, atheletics. Aug 4-10: Constitution Celebrations Join the festivities of the Constitution Celebrations when we commemorate our self-governing status with cultural activities. It is the only time in the year when you get to see Cook Islands traditional singing, dancing, drum-beating, coconut husking, ancient games and taste local delicacies all at the same time.

Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Named after Captain Cook, who sighted them in 1770, the islands became a British protectorate in 1888. By 1900, administrative control was transferred to New Zealand; in 1965 residents chose self-government in free association with New Zealand. The emigration of skilled workers to New Zealand and government deficits are continuing problems. Cook's Geography
    Land and Sea Blend Seamlessly
There are few places in the world as scenic and isolated as the Cook Islands in the South Pacific Ocean, nearly 3000 km. northeast of New Zealand The unspoiled landscapes of these volcanic islands range from craggy mountains and lush interior jungles to white-sand beaches swept by turquoise waters. The Cook Islands consist of 15 tropical islands, scattered over a vast area of Pacific Ocean - approximately 850,000 square miles! Click for Cook Islands map. The island's present-day name stems from the local language, however the precise origin of the meaning is elusive. Simply, 'raro' means 'down' and 'tonga' means 'south'. Some say the famous Tahitian navigator, Iro, visited it once and some years later reported he had "gone down to the south," hence raro tonga. The Samoan voyager, Karika, is also reputed to have called it Rarotonga when he first saw it from the northeast because it was leeward 'raro' and towards the south 'tonga'. These beautiful islands consist of two main groups, one in the north and one in the south.
