CALVIN COOLIDGE CALVIN COOLIDGE: Classicist or Politician Calvin Coolidge is known to the public for several rather unimportant reasons. He was Vice President and then President of the United States, so he is enrolled in the presidential lists forever. He came from Vermont into the political world, in the period right after the conclusion of WW II, at a time when Vermont was little known outside its borders, a country of mountains with small populations and far more deer and bear than human residents. At that time there was no ski-industry in Vermont, the emigration of wealthy and retired persons to Vermont as an unspoiled countryside was more than a generation away, and the most remarkable thing about Vermont was that it has somehow spawned a President of the country. There are several sides to the historical record as we look back in l998 from the vantage point of the 75 th. Anniversary of Coolidge's Inauguration. Coolidge is well know as a man of few words, virtually as a charactiture, or as a VP who unexpectedly became President after Hardings's death, and did little of note or importance while in office. But few people realize that he retained a strong interest in the Greek and Latin Classics from his education at Amherst. And many people have little idea of some unsavory political happenings of his term in office which he favored, while refraining from the veto, which he used more liberally than any President before him since Jackson, on legislation aimed at restriction of the numbers of Jewish and Italian immigrants, while refusing immigration to the Japanese entirely. This is discussed below, after the Classics papers which you are about to read.

DAWES Biography Charles Gates Dawes, (1865-1951), doz, American financier and diplomat, who was VICE PRESIDENT of the United States in 1925-1929. He was born in Marietta, Ohio, on Aug. 27, 1865, the son of Gen. Rufus R. Dawes, a Civil War veteran, and Mary Beman (Gates) Dawes, both of New England ancestry. A graduate of Marietta College (1884) and the Cincinnati Law School (1886), Dawes practiced law in Lincoln, Nebr., from 1887 to 1894 and won acclaim for attacking unfair rate practices of the railroads. Dawes' strong business instincts soon overpowered his interest in the law. Before he left Lincoln he was a bank director and had written a book on banking. He had also acquired stock in gaslight and coke companies in La Crosse, Wis., and Evanston, Ill. He moved to Chicago in 1895. Politics and War Politics came as naturally to Dawes as business. He managed William MCKINLEY 's presidential campaign of 1896 in Illinois, and after the election he was appointed comptroller of the currency. He resigned to run unsuccessfully for the U.S. SENATE . In 1902 he organized the Central Trust Company of Illinois and became its president. After the panic of 1907 his advice was sought and freely given in the formulation of the AldrichVreeland Currency Act. On U.S. entrance into World War I, Dawes obtained a commission as major of engineers, but in September 1917 Gen. John J. Pershing made him general purchasing agent of the American Expeditionary Forces in France. In this capacity he got the supplies the Army needed, eliminated waste, and held down prices. Later, as American member of the military board of Allied supply, he successfully coordinated purchases for all the Allied armies, a major contribution toward the winning of the war. When it ended, he was a brigadier general.

The Coolidge Homestead by Mimi Baird [click on photographs to see larger versions] T he Coolidge Homestead is an important component of the activities of the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation. It is also the centerpiece of the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site in Plymouth . The house was the setting for many significant events that affected the life and times of Calvin Coolidge. He moved there when he was four. T he character of young Coolidge was formed in this house. The shyness that followed him over the years became apparent. He would enter the house after completing a chore and, upon hearing the voices in the kitchen, would immediately dread having to meet people and engage in conversation. Wrenching sadness entered Calvin’s life at 12, when his mother, Victoria Josephine Moor, age 39, died in March of 1885. Calvin, his father, Col. John Coolidge, and sister Abigail were at her bedside. "The greatest grief that can come to a boy came to me. Life was never to seem the same again." O n March 6, 1890, at the Homestead, while Calvin was at Black River Academy in Ludlow, his sister, Abigail, 14, also died. "I am having a very good time this spring but will be glad when I can go home and be with you. It is lonesome here without Abbie."

However, photographs and microfilm of the governor's and presidential papers of the Coolidge Collection are available. The Archivist is available for research questions and information. Please phone 587-1014 before planning a visit. The Coolidge Collection The Coolidge Collection was established in 1920, when Calvin Coolidge gave documents and memorabilia to Forbes Library. Coolidge continued giving materials to the Library throughout the remainder of his life. At the end of his administration, he sent his personal library from the White House to the Forbes Library, in Northampton, Massachusetts; included were the well known Howard Chandler Christy portraits of Calvin Coolidge and his wife, Grace, and the infamous electric horse. The final impetus for the permanent home of the Coolidge Collection came in 1956. Acting upon the request of Grace Coolidge and the Trustees of Forbes Library, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts granted funds to establish a "Calvin Coolidge Memorial Room" as a separate entity within the library. Today, Forbes Library is the largest existing source of primary material on Calvin Coolidge and the only public library in the United States to hold a presidential collection.
