Home Who Why What Implementing Cooperative Learning in your classroom can be a very time consuming, confusing and rewarding experience. It is a strategy that enables you to teach the students how to work together as a team in order to accomplish a goal. The goal could be as simple as finishing daily independent seat work to completing an complex end of unit project. The emphasis is giving the students the tools to conduct their own learning and to have the skills to accomplish the goals that are set. You need to spend some initial time creating a Cooperative Learning Environment. You also need to spend time establishing the roles, skills and rules of cooperative work. Once these issues are established than the students are empowered to use their collective knowledge and individual strengths to accomplish many goals. One excellent source for establishing this Cooperative Learning Environment is the work of Dr.Spencer Kagan . I am currently using the techniques and structures in his book Cooperative Learning to successfully establish by Cooperative Learning Environment. The improved social skills, self-control, increased time on task and quality of work is more than paying off for the time it has taken to create the environment. Dr. Kagan has recently expanded his research to include multiple intelligences.
