    By MICHELLE BURHENN
Special to The Capital-Journal Teenagers enter high school to learn lessons from homework, chalkboards and handouts. While senior Amy Wittenbach achieved academic success marked by her placement in the top 1 percent of her class, she claims she has learned the most from friends. "It's not about the classes or what you learn in them. It's about what you learn from other people," she said. Numerous advanced placement and honors courses highlight Wittenbach's academic coursework. While the studying and homework that typically flooded her after school hours was tough, Wittenbach said the hard work was inspired by "her desire to get out of school." Inspiration also came from numerous teachers, especially one that Wittenbach describes as "upbeat and positive." "Celeste Stanfield always worked her hardest to make sure we understood what we, as students, needed to do and how to do it to make our writing better," she said. "She always took the time to individually explain things and help people, which is something that a lot of teachers don't do." Planning to attend Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and major in pre-medicine, Wittenbach is taking more from her time at Washburn Rural High School than what can be learned from a homework assignment.

Career Awareness Career awareness activities generally take place at the elementary level.  They are designed to make students aware of the broad range of careers and/or occupations in the world of work, including options that may not be traditional for their gender, race of ethnicity.  Career awareness activities range from limited exposure to the world of work, through occasional field trips and classroom speakers, to comprehensive exposure.  The latter may involve curriculum redesign, introduction of students to a wide span of career options, and integration with activities at the middle school level.
    Career Exploration
Career exploration generally takes place at the middle school level and is designed to provide some in-depth exposure to career options for students.  Activities may include the study of career opportunities in particular fields to identify potential careers, writing individual learning plans that dovetail with career majors offered at the high school level, or review of local labor market.
    Career Exposure
Career exposure can be defined as activities at the high school level that provide actual work experience-connecting classroom learning to work. These activities include Mentoring, Internships, Apprenticeships, and Job Shadowing.

Partners Year 1: Roger L. Putnam Vocational School, Springfield Education Association, Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
    Overview
During this two year project Western MassCOSH worked initially with the Cosmetology Department Roger L. Putnam Vocational School in Springfield to incorporate awareness and toxics use reduction training into the current curriculum for hair and nail care. Teachers and students were trained in identifying chemical hazards, choosing less toxic alternatives, and incorporating pollution prevention practices into daily practices. Building on the 1999-2000 Healthy Hair Campaign TURN project in Boston, this project continued to raise awareness about toxic chemicals in hair dyes, hair relaxers, permanents, hairsprays, bleaches, disinfectants, nail sculpting and manicuring products. End products consisted of a curriculum, reference materials, and a self-inspection checklist.
The second year of this project focused refining and expanding the training program to three additional schools and train additional Western MassCOSH staff. The goal was to raise awareness among cosmetology teachers and students, vocational safety and health staff, cosmetology professionals, and the Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health's staff of the hazards associated with hair and nail care and to provide tools to reduce those hazards. Western MassCOSH conducted a "train-the-trainer" program at three Vocational Cosmetology Departments. The training materials were presented at four statewide trainings of Health Officers and at the annual Vocational School Conference. They will also be used in the future to raise awareness among the Board of Cosmetology.

Dear Sisterlocks Supporter: WE WON! After two and a half years of anticipation and stress, filings, pleadings and delays, we can finally say, WE WON! We have had to deal with depositions, and not-so-subtle charges from the opposition that we are dishonest, dirty, ignorant lawbreakers. We’ve had to tolerate lawyers prying into our files, and cross-examining us in every way on how we represent the business. They went through our records with a fine-toothed comb, from our receipts to our publicity brochures to the language we use to train people. We had to fight to keep the names of our trainees away from the opposition, for fear they would start harassing folks (…and they probably would have!). We’ve had to fight to keep the opposition from exposing our training materials in a way that would undermine our trademark protection. But, we won! Essentially, what this means is that anyone legitimately practicing Sisterlocks according to the standards our company has set forth, is EXEMPT from the current cosmetology law in California! We can now train and perform Sisterlocks free from the threat of attack from the State.

DES MOINES, Iowa As more people pay for face-lifts and removal of fat, Iowa cosmetology schools are closely observed by the cosmetology examiners, since their job is to protect the public from unlawful establishments. "I think they do an excellent job of teaching the arts and sciences of cosmetology, as well as sanitation, chemicals and Iowa law," said David Creighton Sr., public member of the state Board of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences. According to Chapter 157.1 of the Iowa code, cosmetology is "arranging, dressing, curling, waving, shampooing, cutting, singeing, bleaching, coloring, or similar works, upon the hair of any person; or upon a wig or hairpiece when done in conjunction with haircutting or hair styling by any means." The code also said cosmetology is "massaging, cleansing, stimulating, exercising, beautifying or similar techniques upon the scalp, face, neck, arms, hands or upper part of the body of any person with the hands or mechanical or electrical apparatus or appliances or with the use of cosmetic preparations, antiseptics, tonics, lotions, creams, or other preparations; manicuring the nails of any person, electrology, esthetics and nail technology." In Calmar, Iowa, there is one public cosmetology school, and 26 private ones are located in the rest of the state. La 'James College, a private cosmetology school, has five locations in Iowa.

NIC's position is summarized as follows:
    • NIC opposes the elimination of practical tests and made a joint resolution adopted in 1986 by NIC, NHCA and NACCAS.
    • NIC endorses state self-regulation, state by state, of instructional schools for the practice of cosmetology arts and sciences. NIC believes that the state cosmetology boards that have the authority vested in them to license the practitioner, the establishment for the practice, and the school for instruction, are in the best position to influence and establish curriculum, maintain and expand the scope of practice, and protect the rights and welfare of the general public.
    • NIC recognizes the importance of continuing education for cosmetology teachers and urges the adoption of continuing education requirements for license renewal of cosmetology teachers in every state.
    • NIC supports both written and practical tests as a necessary prerequisite for licensure. Currently NIC has national, newly revised, written, and practical tests.
    • To ensure the protection of the public health and safety associated with the practice of cosmetology and related activities, NIC has taken the following position:

    Manicurists
http://icpac.indiana.edu/careers/career_profiles/100121.xml.print Job Description Summary: Manicurists clean, shape, and polish clients' nails. A growing number of beauty salons offer many specialized services. The largest and fastest growing of these services is manicures. Manicurists work only on nails. They provide manicures, pedicures, and nail extensions to clients. Giving a manicure involves a number of steps. First, manicurists talk to clients to find out what they want. To get started, they remove any previously applied nail polish from the fingernails. Next, they clean the nails in soapy water, using swabs and orange sticks. Manicurists soften the nail cuticles (the skin around the nails) with water and oil. They push back or clip the cuticles. They also shape and smooth the ends of the nails, using scissors, files, and emery boards. Depending on what each client wants, manicurists apply clear or colored polish onto the nails. If the client prefers, manicurists polish the nails using powdered polish and a buffer. This process leaves nails shiny without liquid polish. Manicurists also apply nail extensions for clients who want them. First, manicurists attach paper forms to the tips of the fingernails. Next, they apply glue to the nails, and create the artificial nails over the forms. Finally, they remove the paper forms, and shape and smooth the edges of the nail extensions.
