The variety of landscapes includes ample coastlines, mountain ridges, rivers and volcanoes, all of them compressed in an area which is approximately the size of West Virginia. Numerous ecosystems and micro-climates are the result of this incredible diversity. The total area of Costa Rica is 19,653 square miles. From all the cardinal points, North to South and East to West, the longest distance is only 200 miles. The area is double the size of El Salvador, but the population is half, at 3.5 million people. Therefore, the only region where overpopulation is felt is in the Central Valley, where the capital city of San José is located.

Geography
Costa Rica is situated on the land bridge that joins North and South America, between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, giving it a privileged location. This small country covers 20,000 square miles (about the size of West Virginia) and has high and rugged mountains in the center and south that are bisected by a thin line of hills. Pristine beaches on both coasts complete this wonderful setting. Capital: San Jose Known worldwide for its national parks, diverse forests, especially the rain forest, and active volcanoes, Costa Rica's lush tropical vegetation is also a wildlife preserve. Climate
Weather in Costa Rica will vary depending on the altitude, and temperatures fluctuate between 68oF and 80oF, creating a spring-like climate all year round. The dry season or summer starts in November and lasts through April, while the "green season" runs from May with light rainfall through its peak in October. A short Indian summer is experienced in July and August. Population
Costa Rica is home to about 4 million people with 90% of the population being of European descent, mostly Spaniards. The rest of the population is a mix of descendants of Jamaicans, Orientals and original natives. Costa Ricans are affectionately called "Ticos."

Geography of Costa Rica
Costa Rica is basically a towering range of mountains, flanked on both sides with coastal plains. When you consider that the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are as close as seventy miles apart, and that the highest mountain rises to 12,000 feet, you've got to know that there will be a fantastic variety of geographic features compacted into a relatively small area. Costa Rica was formed millions of years ago when the continents of North and South America met through the shifting of tectonic plates. The result was amazing. Costa Rico rose out of the ocean in the form of volcanoes, forming a land bridge between the two migrating continents. Through time, a very diverse terrain developed. Costa Rica is often described as a "micro continent" because of the variety of geographic environments. Located just ten degrees north of the equator, Costa Rica is located within the tropics. The variance of altitude throughout the county adds additional dimensions to the complexity of the geographic environment. A brief descriptive list includes:

Geography of Costa Rica T he country is divided by a backbone of volcanoes and mountains, an extension of the Andes-Sierra Madre chain which runs along the western side of the Americas. Costa Rica has four distinct cordilleras or mountain ranges Guanacaste and Tilaran in the north, Central and Talamanca in the south. Costa Rica is part of the Pacific "Rim of Fire" and has seven of the isthmus's 42 active volcanoes plus dozens of dormant or extinct cones. Earth tremors and small quakes shake the country from time to time. The last major quake hit on April 22, 1991. Centered on the Caribbean side southeast of San Jose, it measured 7.4 on the Richter scale. The country's highest point is Mt. Chirripo (3,797 meters). The capital, San Jose, and the neighboring major cities of Alajuela and Heredie lies in the middle of the Meseta Central (Central Valley). Almost two-thirds of the nation's population live in this small, fertile valley. The Pacific coastal plain is much narrower than its Caribbean counterpart. Both coasts are lined with white and black sand beaches.

emonstrating an environmental sensitivity unparalleled elsewhere, Costa Ricans have set aside one quarter of their land as protected areas and national parks. Ecotourists are rewarded with botanical and animal marvels found nowhere else on Earth. Although Costa Rica is best known as an invaluable refuge for nature, this small nation is also a haven of peace. Location, Geography, Climate Costa Rica is the penultimate link in a chain of small nations that together comprise the isthmus of Central America. Along with the Caribbean and the Pacific, the country's borders are defined by Nicaragua to the North and Panama to the South. Located at the nexus of two continents and two oceans, this confluence of land and water makes the region one of mother nature's great bottlenecks. Here, geography constricts a breathtaking amount of plant and animal life within a modest 19,563 square miles (50,900 sq. km), an area comparable in size to Denmark or West Virginia. Within this diminutive nation is found an astonishing five percent of the world's biodiversity, including more than 800 species of ferns, 1,000 of orchids, 2,000 kinds of trees, and 200 species of mammals. Both coastlines of Costa Rica have an abundance of beaches, though the Pacific strands are generally both less developed and less spacious. Between the coasts, the interior of the country is shaped by four

Although all three are approximately 51,000 square kilometers ( 20,000 square miles), the dominant feature of the Costa Rican landscape is the mountains - four ranges, which together extend the full length of the country.
©Michael L. Smith Cocori These are the continuation of the Rocky Mountains in the north and the Andes in the south, all resulting from the presence of various tectonic plates of which there are four affecting Costa Rica. The Cocos Plate is moving northeast towards the Caribbean Plate at the rate of 10 meters per century. This is extremely fast by geologic standards. Earthquakes in Costa Rica have proven much more destructive of property than have volcanoes, but I am not going to get into them here. As in all areas of tectonic activity there are lots of, 112 in the case of Costa Rica; 110 on the mainland and two on Cocos Island. Fortunately, most of them are dormant or the country would be uninhabitable. A few provide excitement.
