Guests of Honor ... Previous BayCons BayCon 1999 Costuming Costuming At BayCon 99 Hall Costuming Costuming, costuming, costuming... We need costuming! It would not be a BayCon without hoards (and hordes?) of massed costumed attendees walking the halls. So bring those costumes and please wear them! The attendees of BayCon love to look, ask questions, start up long conversations, and take pictures of costumes. BayCon will have people scanning the halls for exceptional costuming, so be seen often. You never know where we will be; you might just get some acknowledgement! Masquerade There will be a masquerade at the Alice Through the Looking Glass Masked Ball on Saturday! Follow the link for details. General Costuming Do 's and Don't s Do keep it 'G' rated when walking around in the hotel (the No Costume is No Costume Rule). Inside the Alice Through the Looking Glass Masked Ball, you can go as far as a 'PG' rating, but make sure you have a cover-up for getting to and from the Ball. Do follow the Weapon's Policy at all times. Remember, if you kill it, you eat it.

Links Page Raqs Sharqi-Middle Eastern Dance What is Raqs Sharqi? Raqs Sharqi translates as "The Dance of The East", or "Oriental Dance", although only Egyptian dance is technically Raqs Sharqi. This dance is pre-Islamic and is an oral tradition which has changed over the centuries. Some people believe that it originated as a fertility or Goddess worshipping dance, and in North Africa it can still be used to help during childbirth. It combines a powerful grounded feel with the ability to express the subtleties of the music through strong technique. Improvisation is used a lot, and it is incredibly exciting to see the musicians and dancer sparking off eachother. My own discovery of Raqs Sharqi began in 1996 when I began going to classes held by Aliya. I was immediately smitten and remain addicted to this dance form. I am particularly inspired by the incredible dancing of Suraya Hilal, an Egyptian who now lives in the UK. She is freer as an artist here, and performs Sha'abi, Baladi and Sharqi across Europe. I love dancing and look forward to decades of shimmying!

Costuming the Emmas by Kali Pappas
Being handsome, clever, and rich, it's plain that Jane Austen's Emma Woodhouse would have been well-dressed. But how well, we've all asked, has the film and television industry dressed the Emma adaptations? I'm going to attempt a novice costumer's study of the female wardrobes produced for the1996 film version starring Gwyneth Paltrow and costumed by Ruth Myers ( ) and the 1996/97 television adaptation starring Kate Beckinsale and costumed by Jenny Beavan ( ). A few brief notes on the 1972 serial, starring Dorin Godwin and costumed by Joan Ellacot ( ), will conclude the piece. The two recent versions of the story represent two different treatments of Regency-era clothing. The designers of each sought to "code" and reflect characters, moods, and situations through costume metaphor - this includes choice of fabric, colors, styles, accessories, and the like. However, while the television presentation, costumed by Jenny Beavan, sought to recreate the particular period during which the novel was written and published (1814-1816), Ruth Myers and the team chose an earlier and more generalised sort of look.

Mea culpa, all.... Sempstress.org fell into the swamp. I'm not sure what happened dzones.com (my host, and the host of Sarah's ElizabethanLady.com ) fell over dead, kaput, no more, boarded up the windows, barred the door, padlocked the gate, and shut us all out like a bunch of redheaded step children in the rain.... Not that I'm feeling at all betrayed about this. I'm using a new host now, and I'm trying to get the site restored. To add insult to injury, this happened within hours of me uploadingthe site updates I'd been working on for several weeks. It's just been a week; that's all there is for it.
(03.22.03) Zowies! What did you change?!
What *didn't* I change is more like it.... :) The site's been reorganized. All old files will remain in their previous locations for a while, but it's time to update your bookmarks! Sempstress (the site, not the human) has lacked a feeling of direction for a while. I'm focusing my work now on pattern drafting and construction information, as well as the diaries you all know and love. In the process of the re-org, I've spell checked all the pages (you read that right) if it still looks wrong, it's officially a missa-ism. I've put up a new graphic for the master woman's doublet pattern (I still don't know what happened to the old one) and added a snippet on men's doublets to the doublets page. I've also added a page on

I've set up this site to describe how I made my Vader costume. My suit has been a work in progress since 1978, and it is always undergoing modifications and upgrades.
My costume, shown below, is made mostly from ordinary houshold items and hard ware store finds.
Since I stand at a whopping 5'2", the Standard Don Post Studios mask works well with my proportions. I've scaled down all of the accessories to 75%. I'm literally a 3/4 scale version of my favorite Sith Lord!
In 2000, I got involved in the internet and discovered how many other people enjoy creating their own Vader costumes. I've provided links to some of my favorite sites and forums. Good luck in your quest to build a Darth Vader costume.

Many women with ample figures prefer not to wear the midriff-baring bra/belt skirt sets that are so typical of belly dance costumes. The good news is that there are many other costume variations that lend themselves well to the fuller figure.
