Alaska Court System
25 February 2002. Search the trial court name index, which contains case information for lawsuits filed in 30 Alaska counties. It covers civil and criminal matters, but not appellate, confidential or traffic cases. Generally, the database covers 1990 to present, but searchers will find some older data. Some of the records include dates of birth along with the usual case information.
Alaska Appellate Courts Case Management System
25 February 2002. Look up information about civil and criminal cases on appeal in Alaska courts. Search by party name, appellate case number, or trial court number. The system provides basic case information, including parties names, attorneys, documents filed, transcript availability, and more.
Arizona Public Access to Court Information
24 April 2002. The Arizona Judicial Branch offers a database of case information from 137 out of 180 courts in Arizona. The database covers criminal and civil cases, but does not offer information about sealed, non-served domestic violence, mental health, juvenile, or probate cases. It provides name, date of birth, city/state/zip (but not street address), criminal offense (if applicable), docket entries, and more. When testing the database, I received many browser error messages. It appears the state limits the number of simultaneous users. If you receive an error message, it's best to try again later.

Executive Summary

Introduction

Appendix
What is clear from our review of court activity around the country is that electronic public access to court records, although not as high profile a subject as e-filing, is a concept whose time has come. In the end, the method used to deliver service depends on what the customers want, and isn’t necessarily an either/or choice between technologies. When deciding what to use, courts need to be in touch with their communities because each will have different needs. Each court must decide on what public records are to be provided electronically, and who will pay for the “enhanced” technology. According to a study done by the National Center for State Courts and released at the National Conference on Public Trust and Confidence in the Justice System in May of 1999, most Americans consider the performance of our courts to be “average.” This is not because of a lack of confidence in the professionalism and integrity of either judges or court personnel, but primarily because of the issues of TIMELINESS and ACCESS. Eighty percent (80%) of the people surveyed agreed that courts don’t handle cases in a “...timely manner...” and 44% felt that courts were “...out of touch...” with the citizens in their community. Despite this perceived lack of timeliness, however, courts across the country are facing reduced budgets and staffs but increased caseloads. The latter comes despite FBI and local statistics showing a decrease in crime. At the Federal level, there has been such a substantial increase in cases that even Chief Justice Rehnquist has protested the lack of Congressional funding for adequate staffing. At the state and local levels, some experts have stated that the reduced crime rate actually allows police to devote more energy to investigating, and thus prosecuting, crimes, thereby leading to an increase in caseloads.

State Auditor Phil Bryant in a transmittal letter included in the feasibility study stated, "Drug courts have had a tremendous impact on the criminal justice system in other states. Drug courts if properly implemented should reduce drug use and crime in Mississippi." The feasibility study conducted by the Performance Audit Division of the State Department of Audit and made public Jan. 23, concluded: "Resources and support provided at the local, state and national levels along with a nominal participation fee allow the establishment of drug court systems with the ability to provide the foundation for an effective, community-based strategy to reduce drug use and crime, generate cost savings at the local and state level and allow statewide exchange of information between Circuit Court districts." The audit report is based on a review of state statutes, bills pending now before the Legislature, bills which died in the 2002 Legislature, Attorney General opinions and the policies and procedures of the 14

Recent Initiatives
The Michigan Supreme Court has identified the development of a statewide computer system as one of its highest priorities. Such a system will strengthen public safety by speeding the transmission of important court data among courts and agencies responsible for law enforcement and adjudication. The Court and the State Court Administrative Office are working on several initiatives that will support an automated court information system.
Judicial Network Project
This project is using federal grant funds and funds from the State Judicial Technology Innovation Fund to develop a statewide judicial network using the local government extranet telecommunications services offered by the State of Michigan, Department of Information Technology. The first phase, covering the circuit and juvenile courts in the 25 largest counties plus Chippewa and Marquette counties in the Upper Peninsula, is substantially complete and will enable the electronic reporting of approximately 86% of all state adult and juvenile felony criminal case dispositions to the Michigan State Police criminal history repository. Subsequent phases will include all other trial courts in the state.

Returning workers bring flood of activity
By CAROL CHRISTIAN
For the past week, moving trucks, dollies, carts, office chairs and almost anything that rolls have been paraded from the old Harris County Courthouse downtown to the nearly new Criminal Justice Center a block away. The 20-story center at 1201 Franklin, which houses the district attorney's office and criminal courts, was only 18 months old when floodwaters from Tropical Storm Allison destroyed its mechanical and electrical systems last June. Since the flood, all 22 criminal district courts and 15 county courts-at-law have been crammed into the old eight-story courthouse. After renovation that stretched from an initial estimate of four months to nearly 11 months, the center is to reopen for business on Monday.

Program Descriptions Child Support Project (AB 1058 Introduction AB 1058 also provides funds for and requires each superior court to establish and maintain the Office of the Family Law Facilitator to provide education, information, and assistance to parents who have child support issues. The basic duties of the family law facilitator include:
  • Providing educational materials;
    Distributing court forms;
    Providing assistance in completing forms;
    Preparing child support guideline calculations; and
    Providing referrals to the local child support agency, family court services, and other community agencies.
Each superior court has a family law facilitator's office. In many cases, these offices are located in or very near the superior court departments that handle family law and IV-D cases. In some of the larger counties, there are offices at the branch courts to improve access. By law the facilitators do not represent parents, but they do provide assistance with filling out court forms and offer information to parents on support issues. Facilitators are a valuable resource to demystify courtroom procedures and humanize the court system. Some offices see people on an individual appointment basis; others provide services to groups of parents in a workshop setting.

Belgium
There are two levels of specialist labour court in Belgium: * Labour tribunals: Courts of first instance dealing primarily with individual employment contract issues. * Labour courts: These hear appeals referred by tribunals and seek to resolve significant collective disputes. Each tribunal retains a team of labour prosecutors who may be called upon to provide opinions to the court and are also responsible for instituting criminal proceedings against employers when health and safety laws have been seriously breached. return to top
Denmark
Denmark operates a well established and highly complex array of courts, arbitration and conciliation machinery. Actions concerning individual employment contracts are heard by the general courts. The Labour Court Act governs the activities of the labour courts (Arbejdsretten) that hear cases involving breaches of collective agreements. However, the starting point for disputes resolution is usually the set of 'standard rules' that are common to almost all collective agreements. These define a number of steps to be followed as soon as a problem arises in the workplace. The parties are first obliged to negotiate, then to seek private arbitration (faglig voldgift) if required and, finally, to go to court rather than resort to strike action or lock-outs. No individual employee can bring a case, or be the sole subject of a labour court action.

District Courts have long been called the " peoples court " and are well named for the wide variety of matters over which they have jurisdiction. The collection of fines and assessments generates considerable revenue, which funds both local and state programs. This revenue contributes to public safety and education programs, information systems, crime-victims compensation, public defense, drivers education programs in schools, law enforcement training and local probation supervision programs. In addition to the law enforcement agencies (Kitsap County Sheriff's Office and Washington State Patrol) and the Kitsap County Prosecutor's Office, this Court also files and hears cases brought by the:
