Sams Teach Yourself Visual C++.NET in 21 Days (Chapman)
Introduction
Welcome to Visual C++. Over the text 21 days, you will learn how to use the features that Microsoft has built into its C++ development environment to enable you to create very advanced applications for the Windows operating system, as well as get an introduction into building applications for Microsoft's new .NET platform. When Microsoft's developers first came up with the idea behind Visual C++, they decided to take their world class C++ compiler and create a development environment and tool set that would enable developers to create Windows applications with a level of ease and speed that was previously unheard of. Since that first version, Microsoft has continued to improve the tools that are a part of Visual C++ to make it even easier to create Windows applications. As Microsoft has introduced new technologies into the Windows platforms, it has also introduced tools into the Visual C++ suite to make it easy to integrate these new technologies into your applications.
If you are new to C++, don't worry. I've tried to make it easy for you to learn the C++ programming language while also learning how to build applications using the Visual C++ tools. Although I can't provide as thorough a guide to the C++ programming language as in a book dedicated to the language itself, I've tried to explain how the language works throughout the book.

One of the exciting prospects of using the VBA environment is that one can access the MS Office dictionary, thesaurus and grammar checker while also having access to the user's document (e.g., student essay or prepared text). In addition it is possible to create ones own dictionaries and grammar checkers. Here we give our impressions of how the proofing tools can be used in creating educational activities. Traditionally teachers of writing have suggested turning off the MS Word proofing tools as there seems to be no reliable way of using such general purpose tools. The proofing tools are built for speed, not quality, requiring a critical eye to interpret their suggestions correctly. Our goal was to see if we could create more focused activities that would teach students about the limitations and usage of the proofing tools and also to create activities around some of the more interesting functionality that is provided. Dic-Quiz.zip is a rough prototype of some of the quizzes described below (MS Word v8 document compressed as a ZIP file). This is primarily an illustration of the information that can be extracted from the dictionary and thesaurus. In the sections below we discuss how this could be used. For more information look at the VBA online help that includes many examples of accessing the proofing tools. There are also some interesting insights into the Office '97 proofing tools in

Using Image Lists and Bitmaps Image lists can be used to store collections of bitmaps, making them useful when several bitmaps are needed, such as in tree view and list view controls. In this hour, you learn
  • How to create an image list
  • The properties and methods that can be applied to an image list
  • How to use an image list as a bitmap container
  • The advanced drawing features offered by image lists
Also, in this hour you will build a sample program that creates an image list and uses it as a storage location for bitmap images. This hour will build a foundation that you will use later in Hour 18, "List View Controls," and Hour 19, "Tree Views."
What Is an Image List?
An image list is similar to an array of bitmaps, just like a roll of film is an array of images, as shown in Figure 17.1. Unlike rolls of film, an image list can grow, if needed, as extra images are added to the list. Each bitmap stored in an image list is associated with an index, which can be used to retrieve a particular image. Figure 17.1.

http://www.clt.soton.ac.uk/LTDI/CAA/askingthe rightquestions.htm
Asking the right questions
Adam Warren, Centre for Learning and Teaching This article was first published in volume 13 issue 1 (May 2002) of Connections, the newsletter of Southampton University Computing Services If you ask any academic to list their least favourite tasks, the chances are that marking assignments will be frequently mentioned. This is especially true for tutors who teach large cohorts of students, where the marking burden can become crushingly heavy and must wait until sufficient time can be allocated. On the other hand, if you ask students what would help them learn, you will find that they would like detailed feedback on their assignments. They would also like that feedback soon after the completion of the assignment while it is still fresh in their minds, rather than weeks later when they have moved on to other topics.
Computer-assisted assessment offers at least a partial solution to these challenges by enabling tutors to create online quizzes that use automated marking to provide the students with instant feedback on their answers. The catch for tutors is that creating these online quizzes requires an up-front investment of time and effort before any benefits can be reaped. The process should start with careful consideration of how CAA will fit in to the overall assessment strategy for the unit. For example, CAA is most effective when used to assess recall of facts and their application, whereas essays allow students to demonstrate their understanding of a topic. It follows that the choice of technique should match the type of learning objective that is being assessed, and that CAA is simply a new and useful addition to the techniques available to the tutor.

  • For whom is the Quiz Center made? At this time of the beta version, the Quiz Center is available only to DSU faculty teaching online courses. When the product grows out of the beta version, the service will be extended to all DSU faculty teaching online and on-campus courses.
Any particular software needed to use the Quiz Center? A standard browser and Internet connection are the only two requirements.
Do I need an account to use the Quiz Center? You need a DSUNT login, but a DSUNT does NOT automatically give you account privilege to the Quiz Center. You need to contact CompSvsWebSite@dsu.edu so that we can have your login registered with the Quiz Center.
Where do I start as an instructor? You start by creating questions. A question is the basic building block in the Quiz Center. You need to prepare a collection of questions in your question bank before you can create a quiz by picking items from your question bank. The questions prepared by each instructor are available only to that instructor. A primary advantage of having a question bank is re-usability of questions; each question in the bank can be used in as many quizzes as needed. Deleting a quiz will not delete any questions from the question bank. However, if you change a question in the question bank, the change will be reflected in all quizzes that include this question. While you can edit a question any time, you cannot delete a question that's being used by a current quiz; you can only delete questions that are not being used by any current quizzes.

Students at all levels get excited about using the web and can benefit from using the web for up-to-date information. Recommended grade levels are shown, but you should tailor the project to your students. At the end, we even have a couple of web projects for K-4 As students become more advanced at web use, they can begin to create their own pages. Any of the following ideas can be developed for advanced students by having them work in teams to create a Web Virtual Collection or Exhibition on the topic to share with others. Reminder: One of the most important things you can do for your students is help them learn to evaluate information! Have them ask: Who provided this information? What are his or her qualifications? Is this information consistent with what experts say? Does this information reflect a particular viewpoint? What are the other viewpoints? What can I learn from this web page? Here are some sources of information on this: Evaluating World Wide Web Information
