SITIA RURAL TOURISM OFFICE
HOLIDAYS TOURS FOR ALTERNATIVE TOURISM
Still under construction Sitia Rural Tourism Office is a bureau offering alternative tourism holidays. Its purpose is to promote a different kind of holiday for those interested in rural life, culture and nature both in the district of Sitia and the rest of Crete It is concerned with bringing visitors into contact with the true spirit of the place and the people offering a different kind of holiday for which it is essential that the groups should be kept small (8-15 persons). These groups will be offered the hospitality of places chosen especially for their warm friendly atmosphere and they will be accompanied by local guides who know and love their own part of the world. The programmes offered by our Rural Tourism Office satisfactorily combine the charm of exploration and adventure with peace and the security of knowing you are amongst friends, a warm atmosphere and the human approach allowing you to get to know at first hand the less frequented cor ners of an area and the hidden pages of a culture with the help of experienced guides who will unwind Ariadne's thread for you through the labyrinth of discoveries. These tours are for people who want to get off the beaten track, who are looking for unspoiled little villages, picturesque paths and wide open spaces, for a good local tavern, for the fascinating places away from the coast, for things of cultural interest and the wonders of nature.

The History of Plumbing - CRETE
A cross the Mediterranean Sea from Mesopotamia, the ancient people of Crete and their Minoan sea-kings were leaving their mark on the early annals of history. Between 3000-1500 B.C., their early plumbers had laid elaborate systems of sewage disposal and drainage that resemble one of today. In fact, archaeologists have discovered underground channels that remained virtually unchanged for several centuries, except for extensions to include structures built over the original ones. Some vestiges of the pipes still carry off the heavy rains. Unlike hot and dry Mesopotamia, Crete suffered from extremes of variable climate and geography. Some say those forces provided the catalyst to design systems for the inhabitants' comfort. Likewise, the sharp and jagged slopes of the country provided an early understanding into the principles of hydraulics.

Culture of Crete
We, Cretans, are permanently in love with our island and what it stands for. We are in love with its spirit which evolved from vivacious Minoan times through perpetual and eventful contacts with different races and civilizations, the Dorians, the Egyptians, the Byzantines, the Arabs, the Venetians, the Turks... This very special spirit transcends the limits of culture; we have learnt to distinguish it in all aspects of our life. It runs through the "rizitika" folk songs; it resides in plant motifs of ancient earthenware; it characterizes the way a shepherd drives its flock of sheep to the slopes of the Sfakian mountains; it is diffused in the aroma of "diktamos" herb and adds fire to the eyes of a solitary priest saying mass at a small country church, a handgun passed in it's belt...

Culture Intro
Crete is an island of contradictions at the crossroads of 3 continents, Europe, Asia and Africa, an island with a long history and a rich inherited culture and civilisation. The culture and tradition of the Cretan people date back in the Minoan Era and in ancient Greece as well. Religion plays an important role in Cretan people's lives with Easter being the most glorious of all religious celebrations. The Cretan diet is based on a wide range of local Cretan products and is one of the healthiest human nutritions. Meals are prepared with pure olive oil and are accompanied with wine and raki , the fire water as foreigners call it. Music and dance are very much part of Cretans' celebrations, expressing the Cretan people's passion for life. The Cretans are indeed people with a temperament and truly one of a kind!

~ countryside, sights and culture ~

our tour summer 2002 Rethymno Chania Knossos Monastery Arkadi countryside handicraft pages will follow soon :-) picture links open new windows - please close them, to return Our vacation in Crete were fantastic and beyond our expectation. The charming Greek island cast a spell on us and we decided, to visit this lovely place again. The rides by car through the up to 3000 m high mountains over narrow serpentines and through old villages gave us wonderful impressions and exciting experiences. In the mountains graze many flocks of sheep and goats and you must always be prepared, that they cross the road or even the only highway on Crete, which has just one lane in each direction.
Some of the villages are known for their beautiful traditional handicraft. The women knot lovely handbags and elaborately weave and embroider charming pattern for tableclothes, doyles, scarfs etc. which they hang out at the facade of their houses, to show them the visitors. In this way those villages are rich decorated with these beautiful works. In the evening people are sitting before their houses, making handicraft, talking, playing cards... - an idyllic scene! The Cretan ancient history and culture with its myths and legends, like this of the Minotaurus, who was kept in the labyrinth of the Minoan palace at Knossos, each year attract thousands of visitors from all over the world. One of the greatest attractions on Crete is the excavation place at Knossos, with the almost 4000 years old palace of king Minos. Some of the buildings are scrupulously and faithfully restored and the place as a whole conveys an overwhelming impression of the ancient Minoan culture. It is ever again fascinating to face the amazing feats, which were created thousands of years ago!

According to mythology, Zeus, the God of gods, was born in crete. According to anotheraspect, Pasiphae gave a boat to Daedalus to help him escape from crete.
http://www.hri.org/infoxenios/english/crete/history.html
BIRTH OF ZEUS According to mythology, Zeus, the God of gods, was born in Crete. Cronus, his father, trying to avoid his parents' curse that one of his children would take away from him the ruling of the sky, murdered his children one-by-one, by eating them. His wife, Rhea, terrified and chased by her husband, sought refuge in a cave in the ancient "Aegean Mountain", and, with the help of Uranus and Gaia, gave birth to her last child. Cronus was fooled with a rock in dipers and the loud singing and dancing of demons "Kourites", covering the noise of the newborn's cry. Zeus was rased by the Nymphs, drinking milk from goat Amalthia, the later became a star and her skin was Zeus' shield. When Zeus grew up, he defeated Cronus and became the ruler of the sky. The rock that had fooled his father was put in Delfphi, to remind mortals and gods of his glorious power.
MINOS' REIGN
Minos bewed Pasiphae, the daughter of Sun and nymph Crete and together had eight children, Androgeos, Katreas, Glafkos, Dafkalion, Ariadne, Xenodiki, Akalli and Phaedra. According to mythology, when Minos asked Neptune for a sign that would mean he would become the King of Crete, from the sea emerged a beautiful bull that Minos refused to sacrifice, thus irritating Neptune who punished Minos by making his wife Pasiphae fall in love with the white bull. Pasiphae, with the help of a wooden cow made by Daedalus, was united with the bull and gave birth to Minotaur, who had the body of a human and the head of a bull. According to myth, this creature lived in the Labyrinth, in the palace's underground and was fed with the blood of youngsters. The famous Athenean hero Theseus defeated Minotaur and releaved Athens from the harsh "blood tax" that paid to this supernatural creature.
