Enforcement Why The Senior Crime Prevention University is Needed With 15 percent of its citizens over the age of 65, Pennsylvania has the second highest percentage of seniors in the nation, and that number is continually rising. Attorney General Fisher has created the Senior Crime Prevention University (SCPU) to educate older Pennsylvanians and their families throughout the Commonwealth on crime prevention. Our goal is to make Pennsylvania's older population aware of the threat of fraud to the elder community, teach them how to avoid being victimized; and to make sure they know who they should call when they are concerned about their safety and well being. Educating seniors about crime and how to avoid it is the best way we can help seniors to help themselves.

The Attorney General's Criminal Bureau has four broad missions: investigate and prosecute violations of state criminal law, promote effective law enforcement and criminal justice, crime prevention, and provide assistance to crime victims. The Criminal Bureau's staff of experienced State Police detectives, investigators, and assistant attorneys general focus on investigating and prosecuting crimes that are not usually handled by the state's district attorneys. These crimes include organized crime, large-scale drug trafficking, political corruption and complex criminal conspiracies, crimes against the government, consumer fraud, economic crime, computer crime and environmental crime. The cases investigated and prosecuted by the Criminal Bureau are referred to it by crime victims and other citizens, police departments, government agencies and district attorneys offices. More than 1000 allegations of criminal conduct are referred to the Criminal Bureau each year. The Criminal Bureau promotes effective law enforcement through its Criminal Justice Policy Division. This division reviews crime data and trends, proposes legislation, participates in training programs for law enforcement officers and other criminal justice professionals, and maintains working relationships with many local, state and federal criminal justice agencies. Through these working relationships, Bureau members regularly convene or participate in multi-agency working groups dealing with criminal justice issues such as anti-terrorism planning, drug and alcohol abuse, sentencing reform, prisoner re-entry initiatives, domestic violence and child abuse.

Speech mrs. Dineke Mulock Houwer:
  • Director General for Prevention, Youth and Sanctions, Ministry of Justice, the Netherlands
Ladies and Gentlemen, First I want to welcome you to The Netherlands and to thank you for participating in this Seminar. Especially at this time of the year, in which the preparations for Christmas and the New Year are well under way, it is hard to break away from the daily duties and home. However, I think you made the right choice. The subject of this Seminar, the use of Public Private Partnership to decrease the number of crimes committed against persons, businesses and society as a whole, is highly relevant in a time when all over Europe crime has grown to alarming heights. By saying "Europe" I mean Europe in its broadest sense: Europe as an entity to which EU-members, incoming EU-members and also other EU countries belong. By the way: In this context decisions made at last Fridays’ European Summit are extremely important. Decreasing levels of crime, increasing safety, and, no less important, improving the

October Launches Crime Prevention Month and Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October, 2001 The tragic events of September 11, 2001 have changed the lives of all Americans forever. While our sense of security and peace of mind were shattered on that day, there are things we all need to do to restore our country's sense of community and familiarity with one another. I serve on the National Crime Prevention Council, which was instituted in 1977 to enable citizens to create safer and more caring communities by addressing the causes of crime and violence and reducing the opportunities for them to occur. Now, more than ever before, we must begin to expand the definition of crime prevention. We must redefine it to encompass lessons learned from the most recent tragic events. In addition to property protection through neighborhood watch programs and alarms, we must include community engagement and awareness, improved quality of life and public health - making crime prevention a national priority. October, which launches Crime Prevention Month and Domestic Violence Awareness Month, is an opportune time for Americans to carefully consider what they personally can do to change the landscape of how we prevent and fight crime in our communities.

http://www.mbtapolice.com/prevention/general.html
When traveling the MBTA, patrons may protect themselves from becoming victims of crime by keeping alert and following a few proven crime prevention techniques. The following information will help you in making your MBTA travels safer and more enjoyable.. Personal Safety Always be alert and aware of the people around you. Avoid talking to strangers, especially in isolated areas. lf carrying a purse, hold it tightly and close to your body; if carrying a wallet, keep it in a front pocket. lf you are attacked, scream or blow a whistle in order to bring attention to your situation. On Trains When waiting for a train, stay in a central location that is occupied by other patrons (it's true that there is safety in numbers). During off hours, ride as close to the train operator as possible. lf someone bothers you, move to another seat or car and notify the train operator. If you are on a train, train operators can be contacted by using the intercom at each end of every train car. Train operators can radio messages to the MBTA Police Department. Police officers can then be dispatched to any location. lf you are on a platform or inside a station, you may use the Police Call Box. On Buses Try to avoid isolated bus stops. Stand near others and in well-lighted areas, move to your bus as it arrives. During off hours, ride as near the bus driver as possible. lf trouble occurs, notify the bus driver. The bus driver can radio into his/her dispatcher, who can then notify the MBTA Police Department.

http://www.ag.state.la.us/pressrel/032498a.htm
March 24, 1998 ATTORNEY GENERAL IEYOUB URGES STUDENTS TO BECOME MORE INVOLVED IN CRIME PREVENTION Addresses Middle School Teens During Violence Prevention Rally General Ieyoub will encourage approximately 400 students to participate in mentoring organizations and other volunteer programs after school as part of Violence Prevention Month, Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at Opelousas Junior High School at 9:00 a.m. General Ieyoub said after school is the prime time for crime. Because teenage crime is the highest between 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., it is imperative that adequate after school programs are provided for kids, he explained. "Students must be willing to choose positive activities after school rather than choosing to be on the streets," General Ieyoub said. "I believe that young people are eager to take an active role in crime prevention if given the chance." General Ieyoub expressed that law enforcement, local businesses, social service agencies and private groups must work together to address the multiple causes of violence. "School violence is a problem that is unfortunately affecting every school district in the state, and it s consequences will pose problems for everyone in Louisiana for years to come unless it is addressed and faced head on," General Ieyoub said.
