Crime prevention is the primary commitment shared by all members of the UCLA Police Department. The UCLA Police Department is dedicated to promoting and maintaining safety awareness and community outreach programs. In addition to regular Patrol services, the Police Department has a special Crime Prevention Unit dedicated to developing and coordinating a variety of activities to meet the safety needs of the entire campus community. Presentations and special workshops on all aspects of personal safety , prevention of workplace violence, office/business safety, rape/assault prevention and related law enforcement topics are scheduled on a regular basis at employee and student orientations, and by request, for all campus members. Informational news articles, emergency flyers and safety related brochures are developed and distributed to students and employees describing incidents impacting campus security or personal safety.
The UCLA Police encourages students and employees to take responsibility for their own safety by taking proactive steps to reduce the likelihood of crimes on campus or to themselves.

National Strategy for Community Safety and Crime Prevention

The Safer Communities initiative, which is managed by the National Crime Prevention Centre (NCPC), was launched in June 1998 as a component of the National Strategy on Community Safety and Crime Prevention in Canada. The Strategy is designed to develop community measures to reduce crime that are geared in particular to children and young people, Aboriginal peoples and women. The government is providing $32 million per year to help communities in Canada to design programs and partnerships with the objective of preventing crime. The Strategy's Safer Communities Initiative is comprised of four funding programs: the Crime Prevention Investment Fund, the Crime Prevention Partnership Program, the Community Mobilization Program and the Business Action Program.
Under the Community Mobilization Program, the NCPC has provided a total of $491,065 to-date this year, to help fund 23 crime prevention projects in British Columbia.
Mobilizing communities for crime prevention
The Community Mobilization Program helps communities to develop overall sustainable approaches to crime prevention and to carry out activities that focus on the causes of crime. This program is managed jointly by the government of Canada and the provinces and territories. The federal government will provide funding under this Program to the following groups:
