Education Dept. Releases Campus Crime Stats
Comprehensive Report Shows Colleges Among Safest Areas in Nation
By Arianne Aryanpur
Hoya Staff Writer American college campuses are among the nation’s safest areas, according to a comprehensive campus crime report released by the U.S. Department of Education last Friday. The report indicates that crime rates on college campuses are lower than the rest of the country. The report, which includes crime statistics for over 6,300 public and private postsecondary schools for the last three years, indicates that while the frequency of some on-campus crimes such as homicide have decreased in recent years, others, including sexual assault, are on the rise. Alcohol-related crimes and liquor law violations were those that occurred most frequently on college campuses. In 1999, there were 25,933 arrests and 108,846 student disciplinary referrals for liquor law violations. Compared to other universities of similar size, Georgetown was below average with 268 on-campus liquor law violations resulting in disciplinary action or judicial referrals in 1999. Eighteen drug abuse violations were reported at Georgetown in 1999. While the report indicates that the total number of campus homicides decreased by 54 percent from 1997 to 1999, the number of several other criminal offenses has increased. Reported hate crimes, for example, jumped from 1,312 cases in 1997 to 2,067 in 1999.

State News Staff Writer But MSU police said comparing crime figures is not fair unless other factors that impact the crime rate are considered Crime levels vary at universities, but most schools experience the same types of problems during the school year. Thefts usually cannot be prevented, but police have attempted to promote awareness to eliminate them by encouraging students not to leave items unattended, said Daniel McAleer, assistant chief of the Northwestern University Police Department. MSU police sponsor several volunteer programs that work to prevent thefts from buildings and vehicles. Lot Watch and Office Watch are neighborhood watch-type programs in which students, faculty and staff patrol buildings and parking lots. If they notice anything suspicious they alert police. University of Iowa police also use education as a method to get students to guard their property, said Jeff Van Slyke, associate director of the University of Iowa Department of Public Safety.

Clery reveals increases in crime stats
By Paul Pfotenhauer
An annual report on security policies and the 2001 statistics for specified crimes at UC Davis, its medical center in Sacramento and related facilities reflects significant increases in several categories. The report indicates that reports of forcible sex offenses increased 167 percent from a year ago; aggravated assaults (which include domestic violence) increased by 92 percent; and burglaries increased 70 percent. The report also shows that reports of robbery decreased by 37 percent and arson reports dropped by 20 percent. Reports of forcible sex offenses increased from 18 reports in 2000 to 48 last year. Of those, 28 occurred on campus and the rest were reported adjacent to the campus, at "off-campus properties," or at the medical center in Sacramento. Reports of aggravated assaults also increased in 2001; 25 reports were taken last year compared with 13 in 2000. There were 112 reports of burglary in 2001 compared with 66 in 2000. Drug-related arrests increased from 42 in 2000 to 117 last year. Most of those arrests occurred at the medical center in Sacramento. Five robberies were reported in 2001, three fewer than were reported in 2000. The Clery report documented eight cases of arson in 2001, two less than reported in 2000.
