Forensic Psychology is the application of the science and profession of psychology to questions and issues relating to law and the legal system. The word "forensic" comes from the Latin word "forensis," meaning "of the forum," where the law courts of ancient Rome were held. Today forensic refers to the application of scientific principles and practices to the adversary process where specially knowledgeable scientists play a role. The Diplomate in Forensic Psychology The credential for identifying competence at the highest level in forensic psychology is the Diplomate. The receipt of the Diploma in Forensic Psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) attests to the fact that and established organization of peers has examined and accepted the Diplomate as functioning at the highest level of excellence in his or her field of forensic competence. The ABPP diploma has been recognized by judicial decisions, regulations, and statutes in some jurisdictions as the standard of professional competence in forensic psychology.

Sage Graduate School
Master of Arts in Forensic Psychology Note: the statutes for licensure and independent practice as a psychologist in New York State currently require an earned doctoral degree in psychology from an accredited institution. The MA program in forensic psychology qualifies one to function as a practitioner in agency and institutional settings, or under the supervision of a licensed psychologist.
Program Design and Requirements
The Master of Arts program, designed for those with some background in psychology and/or criminal justice, requires 45 credits, 27 in the forensic core and 18 in support courses in psychology. Included in the program are the domains of knowledge and skill acquisition which we consider requisite for a master's degree in forensic psychology. These include: 1) an understanding of the theories and applications within the field, 2) a knowledge of counseling theories and applications, of psychological testing and its application to legal questions and settings, of theories of consultation and education, and 3) skill development specifically relevant to forensic settings. Thus, this program includes three courses in the theory and practice of forensic psychology, two assessment courses, three counseling courses, abnormal psychology, and two different situated internships. Other requirements include two courses in community psychology, a research methods course, and a final project. An understanding of the role and importance of the community and institutional structures of both the legal and mental health systems is fundamental to forensic psychology. Two required community courses provide this knowledge base and the skills necessary for interaction and intervention within such structures. A strong background in research methodology is essential for any master's program in psychology and the Behavior Research Methods course fulfills this criterion. As with all other master's programs at Sage Graduate School, the Research Seminar or optional Thesis provides a culminating experience. There is no emphasis in this program on the teaching of criminal profiling.

Forensic Psychology
S peaking the truth, I do not personally know any criminal profilers, like I do psychologists who do research, teaching, and consultation in the general field of psychology and law. I, like many others, have learnt about the profilers' line of work through movies and TV shows. For example, I was fascinated by what Jodie Foster's character did in the movie Silence of the Lambs. She was the protégé in the BSU (Behavioral Science Unit). The head of the BSU was modeled after John E. Douglas, a real-life former FBI profiler. Thanks to the popular media, criminal profilers became probably the only forensic psychologists we are familiar with. For people who are interested in some serious discussions about criminal profiling its start, its use, its theoretical models and validity, the facts and the myths I compiled some links in the Criminal Profiling page. FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY AN OVERVIEW From a brochure from the Ontario Psychology Association: "Forensic psychology is concerned with emotional and behavioural questions and issues that relate to law and legal systems" As one could see this is a very broad definition. The brochure goes on further to state:
Forensic psychologists, "provide advice to legislators, judges, correctional officers, lawyers and the police ... is called upon, for example, to serve as an expert witness ... diagnose and treat incarcerated and probationed offenders; and screen and evaluate personnel in the law enforcement and judicial systems" This definition of forensic psychology is most definitely a multi-disciplinary one. What skills a forensic psychologist needs varies depending on their positions. Overall an understanding of abnormal psychology, psychometric testing, and social psychology appear to be an asset. Criminal profilers, recently termed as Investigative Psychologists, require additional training in personality, criminology, and the forensic sciences. While police psychologists often carry this work load, along with an industrial psychological component. TERMS USED FOR FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGISTS

Forensic Psychology Consultation in Criminal Cases
By Geoffrey R. McKee, PhD, ABBP. E-mail: grmckee@aol.com
Issues regarding a defendant's mental health frequently arise in criminal litigation. Attorneys may have a duty to investigate such matters (Baxter v. Thomas 45 E3d 1501 1995), however, consultation by a psychologist who would qualify as an expert witness may be quite expensive. The purpose of this brief article is to describe levels of consultation attorneys might employ when retaining the services of a forensic psychologist. I Telephone consultation (only) At this level, the psychologist agrees to provide telephone consultation to the attorney in one or more calls as the case develops. The purpose of this type of consultation is to help the attorney identify mental health issues (e.g., competency to confess, to stand trial, mitigation) to be explored more fully by one of the other levels listed below. The psychologist could also help to identify psychologists who have case-relevant expertise based on their published research. At this consultation level, the psychologist would not offer professional opinions about the defendant as it is improper and unethical to make statements about persons who have not been personally examined. Apart from fees for the psychologist's time, expenses at this level are expected to be low as the psychologist would not be traveling nor having direct contact with the defendant. The other levels described below presume an initial telephone conversation between the attorney and forensic psychologist.

Forensic Psychology - Florida Tech's Newest Undergraduate Degree What is Forensic Psychology?
The forensic psychology program is designed for students who want to learn how psychological theory and research can be used in the criminal justice system and related fields. A degree in forensic psychology provides a comprehensive understanding of human behavior, including criminal behavior and important skills in data analysis, writing and research. A firm knowledge of psychology research and skills sets forensic graduates apart from others with degrees in criminology or criminal justice. This degree qualifies graduates for important roles in the criminal justice field. Why pursue Forensic Psychology at Florida Tech?
Florida Tech will be one of the few universities in the country that offers this major at an undergraduate level, and the only university in the state of Florida offering this program. The Florida Tech forensic psychology program provides students with a highquality undergraduate psychology degree with a strong forensic emphasis in a private school atmosphere of small classes and close interaction with faculty.

http://dse212.port5.com/forensic.html
Focus on Forensic Psychology Up until 10 years ago or so almost every psychology graduate wanted to be a clinical psychologist working in mental health. Nowadays, and mainly because of the success of "Cracker" and TV programmes like it, most of them want to be Forensic or Criminal Psychologists. Forensic psychology is the interface between psychology and the law. Forensic psychologists may provide services which are both clinical and forensic in nature so, for example, it may involve treating individuals who are emotionally traumatized by an accident or commenting on the extent of that trauma as an expert. Offender profiling and crime analysis are the two areas that most of us identify as being their key role but in fact a great deal of the work is laborious, pain-staking background research. Training covers a variety of areas, for example, examinating the evidence that consistent criminal tendencies can be reliably assessed and the extent to which personality factors can explain that consistency. The relationship between crime, law and moral judgement. Perspectives on the origins of the criminal tendency in childhood. The role of opportunism in criminal decision-making in relation to environmental factors and attempts to prevent crime. The role of victims in creating, defining and reporting crime, and the psychological consequences of crime for victims and potential victims. The actions of victims, police, witnesses and the courts. The behaviour, attitudes, and role of witnesses. The position of psychologically "abnormal" offenders.

http://www.flash.net/~greasure/page3.htm
Forensic Psychology Perhaps the most encompassing account of the current state of forensic psychology can be found in Eric W. Hickey's Serial Murderers and Their Victims ; second edition (see works cited page). Hickey states: The term forensics means belonging to or used in courts of law. This has given rise to forensic medicine or the use of medical expertise in legal or criminal investigations. In turn, forensic psychology has begun to offer insights into criminal behavior and the criminal mind. Criminology and psychology join forces to create criminal profiling, or the creation of criminal portraits that assist those in law, law enforcement, mental health, or academics to better understand crime and criminals. We might envision forensics as a hub of a wheel with the spokes representing the sciences. For example, geography is now becoming a tool to address issues of crime and victimization. This approach is referred to as spatial mapping or environmental criminology and is used to generate geographic profiles of offenders, victims, and crime scenes. Computers are now being used to identify crime locations in urban and suburban areas by plotting where they have occurred over time. This geo-mapping approach to crime prediction has tremendous implications for future urban development, police administration, and policy development. Spatial mapping can also be applied to understanding criminal victimization, victim profiling, and promotion of victim protection. David Canter of Liverpool, England established a program in Investigative Psychology in which computer models are used to predict criminal offending.
