I am a New Jersey licensed psychologist (#2244), and I provide forensic psychological consulting services and expert witness testimony in Family, Civil and Criminal Courts throughout New Jersey, and in Federal Court, with offices located in Bridgewater, Flemington, Princeton, and East Brunswick, NJ. I provide diagnostic evaluations, psychological testing, and attorney consultation services. I also provide psychotherapy and counseling for individuals and families involved with the legal system. (For information about psychotherapy services provided to non-forensic clients, see the Psychotherapy page.) Forensic psychology is the interface of psychology and the law, so all psychological services provided for the legal community are forensic psychological services. Most forensic psychologists provide services which are both clinical and forensic in nature. When a psychologist treats an individual who was emotionally traumatized by an accident, the treatment is clinical in nature, designed to assist the individual in recovering from the trauma. But when the psychologist is asked to provide a report for the court, regarding the extent of the trauma, and to assess the psychological damage incurred, then the psychologist is providing a forensic service.
Psychological evaluation and consulting services intended to assist the courts in determining decisions regarding family, civil, or criminal matters, require a detailed, situation-specific assessment strategy which goes beyond the typical psychological evaluation completed for clinical purposes. Many psychologists perform clinical evaluations, and most psychologists have had training in the administration of psychological testing. But, very few psychologists have experience providing forensic consulting services.

Forensic Psychology is the application of the science and profession of psychology to questions and issues relating to law and the legal system. The word "forensic" comes from the Latin word "forensis," meaning "of the forum," where the law courts of ancient Rome were held. Today forensic refers to the application of scientific principles and practices to the adversary process where specially knowledgeable scientists play a role. (American Academy of

Introduction
The Australian Psychological Society (APS) College of Forensic Psychologists describes forensic psychology as "the application of psychological knowledge, concepts and skills to the understanding of the functioning of the legal and criminal justice system. Forensic psychology embraces psychology and the law, the psychology of police and policing, corrections, probation and parole, victim services, addiction services, family services and the full range of activities related to law enforcement, and the evaluation and treatment of offenders." The program offered by this University offers the following degrees: Doctor of Psychology (Forensic) comprising coursework and minor thesis Master of Criminology (Forensic Psychology) It is anticipated that the first two of these courses will offer different pathways for individuals wishing to qualify for forensic registration under the Australian Psychological Society (APS) guidelines. The doctorate will also qualify students for clinical registration with the APS. The aims of each course, and the linkages be

FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY Forensic psychology is a well-established, yet often misunderstood, practice area of psychology and law. The field actually predates the sociological jurisprudence movement of 1930-1950, and goes back at least to 1908 when Hugo Munsterberg (the founder of applied psychology) published On the Witness Stand , a book mostly about eyewitness testimony and juries. With the insanity defense, the field goes back even further, to the case of Daniel M'Naghten in 1843, who shot and killed the secretary of the prime minister of England. In criminology, one can trace the origins of a clinical or psychological criminology to the psychiatrist William Healy, who in 1909, created the Juvenile Psychopathic Institute to assist the newly created juvenile court in Illinois. Numerous other people figured prominently in the development of forensic psychology, and it would be a mistake to overlook the areas of prison psychology and police psychology. The courts overwhelmingly recognize and accept psychologists of all stripes as expert witnesses in all U.S. courtrooms ( Jenkins v. U.S.

Forensic Psychologists: Modern Pioneers Bridging the Divide Between Psychology and the Law
During the past twelve months, the arrest rate in the United States has risen twenty percent, which means 14 million people were charged with crimes. Between 1981 and 1991, the occurrence of violent crimes has also increased dramatically by more than thirty percent. Sixty percent of all inmates have previously been incarcerated for committing prior crimes, and ten to thirty-five percent of those who are in jail also suffer from mental illness. Rising to the Challenge and Meeting an Urgent Need
Crime on the rise. Increasingly, people are choosing to handle conflict through violent, retaliative measures. As these trends continue, issues of assessing mental illness and determining appropriate strategies for rehabilitation will gain urgency. At CSPP, a new group of professionals forensic psychologists is working to help reverse the statistics cited above and to combat a pattern of conflict going out of control. Through CSPP-Fresno's new PsyD in forensic psychology, establishing less than a year ago, students are learning how to provide services that increase the effectiveness of the collaboration between psychology and the criminal justice system in mediating conflicts and determining justice. At this time, CSPP is virtually the only institution in the country offering a graduate-level program of this kind. In its inaugural year, it has drawn students from other graduate programs as well as professionals who have been working in the mental health field.

58. MSc Forensic Psychology
forensic psychology examines psychological theories, methods and processeswithin the context of the legal, criminal and civil justice systems.
http://www.surrey.ac.uk/Psychology/MScForensicPsychology.htm
What is Forensic Psychology? Recognised by the ESRC for Research Training Forensic psychology examines psychological theories, methods and processes within the context of the legal, criminal and civil justice systems. In particular it looks at the treatment and assessment of offenders, especially those who are mentally disordered, contributes to the investigation of crime by examining issues such as identification of suspects, investigative interviewing, psychological profiling and detecting deception. Forensic psychologist work in collaboration with criminal justice practitioners such as police and probation as well as other psychologists within the special hospitals and the prison service. What is Special about the MSc in Forensic Psychology at Surrey? We have a strong and long tradition of Forensic Psychology at Surrey. Professor Lionel Haward, recognised as a founding father of the discipline, was based at Surrey for many years as was Professor David Canter who pioneered investigative psychology before moving to Liverpool University. The present course director, Dr Katarina Fritzon, and the Professor of Forensic Psychology, Jennifer Brown, work closely with colleagues from Broadmoor Hospital to give the Surrey course a distinctive emphasis in policing and treatment of the mentally disordered offender.

59. MSc Forensic Psychology Focus

http://www.surrey.ac.uk/Psychology/MScForensicPsychologyFocus.htm
Focus on...
Legal and criminological psychology at the University of Surrey. Jennifer Brown
The University of Surrey has been associated with legal and criminological psychology for over twenty years. Lionel Haward , a founding father of British forensic psychology, was director of clinical training at Surrey during the 1970s and 80s. He was an early pioneer in developing principles and practice of forensic psychology writing one of the first books on the subject. David Canter undertook the developmental work into psychological offender profiling whilst at Surrey and continued the tradition of harnessing psychological methods for application within criminal justice practice. The present bearers of the forensic torch continue this emphasis. MSc activities The external examiner for our course is Dr. Gisli Gudjonsson of the Institute of Psychiatry. This gives our students privileged access to his important work on suggestibility and two have made use of this opportunity to conduct research using the Gudjonsson suggestibility scale. Undergraduate connections Several Surrey undergraduates have student placements in forensic settings e.g. Surrey Police, Broadmoor, HMP Aylesbury. They use the opportunity of their placements to develop ideas for their undergraduate dissertations. Research topics include stress amongst sex offender treatment managers, secondary traumatisation experienced by police officers involved with violent and sexual offending, gender differences in personality disorder diagnosis of Broadmoor patients. Some of this work has been published and roused considerable interest from criminal justice professionals.

60. Forensic Psychology
The most common definition is that, forensic psychology is the application ofpsychological knowledge to the criminal justice system. Well what does that
http://www.uplink.com.au/lawlibrary/Documents/Docs/Doc23.html
Forensic Psychology: The misunderstood beast
Note: For students and laymen alike forensics appears to be one of the most misunderstood psychological disciplines. People cannot be blamed for their misconceptions. In my four year undergraduate program forensics was mentioned only once. And what was mentioned was a useless definition that really did not explain at all the intricacies of the field. The most common definition is that, "Forensic Psychology is the application of psychological knowledge to the criminal justice system." Well what does that tell us? Not much. When I read that definition I asked myself, what psychological knowledge is being applied and what exactly is the criminal justice system? The answers as I eventually found out are very diverse. The easiest way to explain the field is to break down the criminal justice system into its own sub- components and see where psychological knowledge can be applied to these areas. The Beginning - Criminal Investigation Round Two - The Court System
Frequently, people forget about the applications of forensic psychology to civil law. Often a forensic psychologist is asked to make evaluations of defendants or plaintiffs disability or level of trauma. From these evaluations the court can decide whether compensatory damages should be provided. Civil-Forensic Psychologists also work on child custody, sexual harassment, and immigration cases. Virtually any civil matter that requires psychological evaluation may include the work of a Forensic Psychologist. It is important to remember that not all Forensic Psychologists work with violent criminals.
