Robert Presley Institute of Criminal Investigation
The POST Robert Presley Institute of Criminal Investigation (ICI) is designed to improve the effectiveness of individual investigators through training. The ICI is structured to include a Core Course, eleven Foundation Specialty Courses, and related electives. The Core Course includes instruction in tasks performed by all investigators, regardless of assignment, while Foundation Specialty Courses include instruction on the different specialty assignments that detectives find themselves. Electives provide instruction which support the specialty chosen. The ICI program will be informative to all investigators regardless of experience level. All ICI courses use the adult experience-based techniques of learning. Participants rely on their experience and the experience of others for learning. Learners are challenged through the use of realistic and practical applications. Even the most experienced investigators can learn from their association with others in the class. ICI courses are open to all full-time investigators or qualified uniformed officers with one year experience conducting follow-up investigations. ICI only requires a firm commitment from both students and their respective agencies that all courses will be completed.

Legal Studies Academy INTRODUCING... THE FIRST COLONIAL LEGAL STUDIES ACADEMY
Welcome to all students who have a deep interest in and curiosity about the law, law-related fields, and legal and ethical issues. The First Colonial Legal Studies Academy functions as a school-within-a-school to offer students the opportunity to embrace not only an academic curriculum that will fully prepare them for post-secondary education but will also allow them career exploration within the area of legal studies. Students enrolled in the Legal Studies Academy will receive a solid foundation in core subjects as well as practice and experience in a worksite learning component. Students may earn either a Standard Diploma or an Advanced Studies Diploma based on the options available in the various curricula.
PROGRAM OF STUDY
The Legal Studies Academy Curriculum has two major components: Law is one area of focus while the other is Administration of Justice. These areas are further divided into special areas of study.
The Law component is divided into two academic strands of Pre-Law and Administration of Law. Pre-Law offers students the opportunity to explore a law career with courses centered on occupational options open to lawyers. The Administration of Law strand provides students the coursework needed to pursue varied options within the field of law such as legal secretary, paralegal, and court reporter.

August 2000 Chapter 2
EDUCATION SERVICE DELIVERY This chapter reviews Riviera Independent School District's (Riviera ISD) educational service delivery and performance in four key areas:
A. Student Performance and Instructional Program Delivery B. Gifted and Talented Program C. Compensatory Education D. Career and Technology Education E. Technology F. Discipline Management and Safety
D. CAREER AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION The Texas Education Code requires school districts to provide a curriculum that affords each student the opportunity to "master the basic skills and knowledge necessary for managing the dual roles of family member and wage earner and gaining entry-level employment in a high-skill, high-wage job or continuing the student's education at the post secondary level." A TEA rule requires school districts to offer Career and Technology Education (CATE) courses selected from three of eight career and technology education areas: agricultural science and technology, business education, health science technology, home economics, industrial technology, marketing, trade and industrial and career orientation. Riviera ISD offers CATE programs in four of the TEA's eight required areas: web mastering, desktop publishing, agriculture and homemaking. FINDING Riviera ISD provides opportunities to its high school students to take college classes and receive college credit. Riviera ISD entered into an articulation agreement with Coastal Bend and Del Mar community colleges so that the students can take college level classes and receive college credit while completing high school requirements. In the 1999-2000 school year, 172 students enrolled in dual credit classes.

What is Criminalistics?
Criminalistics is the application of scientific methodologies to legal matters. Criminalists are laboratory scientists who are primarily concerned with characterizing trace evidence associated with a crime. Analytical results are often given as evidence in a Court of Law. The trace evidence may include: flammable substances and explosives; fire debris, gunshot residues bodily fluids, plastics, metals, glasses, hair, fibers, vegetation, paint, and over-the-counter, prescription, and illicit drugs. Criminalists may also be called upon to analyze firearm and ballistic characteristics; documents; imprints; computer files; and voice patterns. A criminalist with a degree based in chemistry represents one of the most sought-after backgrounds in criminalistics. Our curriculum prepares students with hands-on experience involving the fundamental techniques and instrumentation of a modern crime laboratory. This experience includes 1) the chromatographic techniques used in drug and arson residue analysis, 2) trace analysis using a variety of techniques with a large variety of sample matrices, and 3) genetic analysis using electrophoretic techniques.
