44. Crisis Intervention And Suicide Prevention At The Workplace

Mehlum, Ingrid Sivesind and Mehlum, Lars:
Crisis intervention and suicide prevention at the work place
(First published in the Norwegian journal Suicidologi 1999, no. 3.)
Violence Violence at the workplace may be defined as events where a person is harassed, called names, threatened or attacked under circumstances relating to his or her work, and which imply an obvious or suggested threat against safety, well-being or health (Svanstrøm and Knudsen 1997). Violence and threats of violence in the workplace are not uncommon. According to the "Living Conditions Study of the working environment" from 1996, 6% of the female (7% in the 25-44 years age bracket) and 5% of the male (8% in the 16-24 years age bracket) respondents stated that they were subjected to violence or threats of violence twice a month or more frequently. Far more people are, however, affected by this problem, as though experiencing such problems more rarely, they will nevertheless be under a constant fear of such a thing happening.
Robbery
Banks and post offices have long been particularly prone to robberies, but are gradually becoming more robbery-proof, and other workplaces have become more vulnerable. Corner stores, service stations, shops with long opening hours, taxis and some bus drivers are frequent venues or victims of robberies.

National Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy
Crisis intervention and primary care activities Crisis intervention and primary care programmes provide direct care to young people at high risk of suicide aimed at averting or ameliorating a suicide crisis The Department is supporting a major programme to increase the accessibility and expertise of telephone counselling services available to young people through the provision of $3 million each to Lifeline and Kids Help Line from the National Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy. This will lead to a major improvement in the reach, expertise, networking and evaluation of these telephone counselling programmes. Through the National Mental Health Strategy the Department is supporting State and Territory Governments to develop a wider range of mental health services and crisis services available to children and young adults. For example, National Mental Health Strategy funding is being used to trial a screening programme which provides early assessment and referral of school students at risk for suicide or mental health disorder. The Department also has major responsibility for primary care systems in Australia through its support for General Practitioners, who are often the first service providers consulted by young people considering suicide. The National Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy includes a major national project to assist general practitioners in developing their skills to prevent and respond to suicide.

Losing a loved one through suicide is an especially devastating loss. The loved ones left behind (survivors) are left with a journey of grief that can be especially difficult. There are many reasons for this. First of all, the death is usually unexpected and sudden, even if the person had been talking about suicide in the past. The method is often violent and it is difficult for survivors to think about their loved one inflicting this violence on her or himself. Unfortunately, suicide carries a stigma in our society and friends and family members are at a loss for knowing what to say. Then, of course, survivors are plagued with the constant questions of "Why did she or he do it?", "Why didn't I see it coming?", and "What could I have done to stop it?" For many people, losing a loved one to suicide causes a feeling of abandonment thinking, "My loved one chose to leave me!" All of these issues are difficult ones to grapple with during the grieving process.
