"The skill that gives applicants the winning edge is a capacity for independent and critical thinking; this is what employers are looking for." Dr David Kemp, reported in THE AGE, 9th February 2000. Dr Kemp was releasing the results of a survey of 1260 Australian employers conducted for DETYA by ACNielson Research. THE AGE article continues: "The survey confirmed the main reason employers wanted to employ university graduates was because they were able to introduce new ideas and fresh thinking into the business organisation, were most likely to become 'tomorrow's managers' ..." Let's face it. There are three kinds of people in the world: the kind who are good at a course like this, and the kind who are not. Throughout your day, you will want to keep your critical eye on the situation around you, and not blindly accept everything you see, hear or read, even if it's from your professor, who was joking in that last sentence. Our course is designed to develop your critical thinking skills, the basic skills of good reasoning that you need for the intelligent and responsible conduct of your life. The goal is to improve your ability to think and act reflectively, creatively and responsibly. Critical thinking skills involve the ability to reason, to assemble evidence in order to develop a position, and to communicate complex ideas. You already have the critical thinking skill that prevents you, when you are trying to locate a gorilla costume for Halloween, from looking up the word "gorilla" in the yellow pages of the phone book. But our course will improve your higher level skills. The major topics in our course include:
  • thinking logically identifying argument structure

Critical Thinking
Its Definition and Assessment
Fisher, Alec and Scriven, Michael Critical Thinking: Its Definition and Assessment (236pp + xiv) published October 1997 by the Centre for Research in Critical Thinking, UEA, Norwich, UK and Edgepress, PO Box 69, Point Reyes, California 94956, USA. ISBN 0-9531796-0-5. What is critical thinking? In this innovative monograph, the authors construct a new and comprehensive definition of critical thinking - the evaluative definition - which places evaluative judgement at the heart of critical thinking. This is elaborated with a novel and detailed account of the competencies which make up critical thinking and which need to be taught and assessed if critical thinking skills are to be improved (in a rapidly changing and increasingly computerised age which makes them daily more important). Against this background, the authors then address a second question: How should we assess the quality of someone's critical thinking?

About Teaching and Learning Critical Thinking
Critical thinking ability develops gradually as we learn to organize our world logically and gauge probabilities with increasing success. Instruction in particular subject areas almost always includes an element of teaching critical thinking by example. Our courses in critical thinking examine formally and informally the logics that give structure to thinking itself. In this way, we continue the lifelong project of becoming more aware of our own thinking and the thinking of others.

1. What are the broad aims of the subject?
Criticism cannot begin until understanding is achieved. My broad aim in this subject is to help you to develop your ability to follow complex argumentation across a range of different subjects so that you will then be in a position to think critically about it. The purpose of critical thinking is reasonable appraisal of ideas (including one's own); but first one must understand just what the ideas are. Naturally, in the course of learning how better to identify and track arguments, you will also learn some of the ways in which to evaluate them. Critical thinking is sometimes (wrongly) thought of as destructive thinking. That is very far from my understanding of this subject, and hence it is far from my aims simply to give you a battery of techniques with which to demolish other people's ideas. I want to give you techniques with which you can understand a piece of argumentation sufficiently well to be able to say something sensible about its strengths as well as its weaknesses. But first one must understand. 'First understand' could be the motto for this subject.

Critical thinking should also, in my opinion, help us to analyze and understand structures of power that often attempt to persuade us either overtly or covertly to a set of values or world views. In this critical thinking class you will learn to analyze and evaluate the structure of arguments we meet everyday in our lives. As this can only be learned through practice - and dialogue - we will spend a portion of class actively practicing argument analysis and skills. We will also learn to evaluate premises and to identify common errors in reasoning as well as the background belief systems that determine how we evaluate claims made about the world around us. The course will include class discussions, weekly homeworks, a written letter to your congressperson(s) or CEO, and videos focusing on contemporary political and consumer issues.
