Twentieth century sculptor Ivan Mestrovic is the pride and joy of Croatia's art world. His work can be seen in town squares throughout the country, and he has also designed several imposing buildings, including the Croatian History Museum in Zagreb. Croatian literary figures include 16th century playwright Marin Drzic and 20th century novelist, playwright and poet Miroslav Krleza - the latter's multi-volume work, Banners , is a saga about Croatian life at the turn of the 20th century. Croatian folk music is a hotch-potch of styles. The kolo , a lively Slavic round dance, is accompanied by Roma-style violinists or players of the tambura , a Croatian mandolin. Dalmatia's gentle guitar and accordion bands have a distinctly Italian flavour. Croats are overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, while virtually all Serbs are Eastern Orthodox. In addition to various doctrinal differences, Orthodox Christians venerate icons, let priests marry, and couldn't care less about the Pope. Thoroughly suppressed during Yugoslavia's communist period, Roman Catholicism is now making a comeback, with most churches strongly attended every Sunday. Muslims make up 1.1% of the population and Protestants 0.4%. There's a tiny Jewish population in Zagreb. Croatians love a bit of oil, and among the greasy delicacies you'll find here are

an Overview of its History, Culture and Science
Dedicated to the memory of Gordan Lederer Dear reader,
When you meet a new friend or colleague, you are necessarily confronted with his cultural and historical background, peculiarities of his own, that are sometimes difficult to conceive. Having this in mind, we believe you will understand our wish to give you a better insight into what could be called a Croatian cultural heritage, at least in a rapid and sketchy way. The connections with other European cultures are, as you will see, deep and longstanding. We shall also try to intersperse this hypertext with some interesting facts by which Croatia is recognizable. In short, we start by describing an extremely complex and interesting entity, unique in Europe - the Republic of Croatia, or in Croatian - Republika Hrvatska HR

Land of a Thousand Islands
"The gods wanted to crown their creation and on the last day they turned tears, stars and the sea breeze into the isles of Kornati".
Thus spoke George Bernard Shaw, astounded by the breathtaking beauty of the largest archipelago in the Mediterranean with its 125 islands, islets and reefs. Yet the Kornati are just one of the numerous wonders of nature with which Croatia is endowed. In Croatia, where the Mediterranean, the mountains and the Pannonian plains come together in a unique harmony of natural beauty, within just a little more than a hundred kilometres, you can come across excitingly different landscapes. The Adriatic, with one of the most indented coastlines in Europe with its 1,185 islands and islets, of which only 66 are inhabited, is undoubtedly the most popular tourist destination. Continental Croatia, however, also abounds in beauty: it is a land of forests, rivers rich in fish, swift mountain streams and deep gorges of Gorski Kotar, and the magnificent Plitvice Lakes in Lika. It is a land of golden wheat fields, oak woods and wide rivers of Slavonia and Baranja, a land of quaint little villages, romantic castles and manors, and picturesque rolling hills and vineyards of the Croatian Zagorje. The continental regions of Moslavina and Podravina are the cradle of Croatian naive art, unique in its style. These regions are also famous for their wines, while Posavina and Medjimurje, the region between the Drava and the Sava rivers, are a paradise for hunters and anglers.

Country Info Croatia Introduction Croatia General Data Croatia Maps Croatia Culture ... Croatia Time and Date Croatia Culture Back to Top The regions that comprise Croatia were not unified historically, so the country’s arts show a mix of foreign and native influences. The Dalmatian coast was long connected with Italy, and architectural marvels from Roman times can still be found in Dalmatia. Split, for example, contains the remains of the Roman emperor Diocletian’s palace, while the ruins of a Roman amphitheater lie in Pula. Medieval walls and fortifications distinguish the city of Dubrovnik in southern Croatia, which was an independent city-state until the early 19th century. Continental Croatia, as part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, had its own regional identity but much of its art and literature followed the empire’s styles. Croatian folk music remained linked to its locale, with styles differing greatly between Dalmatia and other regions. Croatian literature are the much-translated novelist, poet, essayist, dramatist, polemicist, and critic Miroslav Krleza (1893–1981) and the lyric poet, essayist, and translator Tin Ujevic (1891–1955), both of whom treat man's psychological and sociopolitical struggles at both individual and universal levels. The monumental sculptures of Ivan Meštrovic (1883–1962), whom the French sculptor Auguste Rodin once called “the biggest phenomenon among sculptors,” synthesize a particularly Croatian national romanticism with the entire European tradition. Croatian naive painting, through a simple depiction of the timeless concerns of men and women caught within the cycles of the seasons and of life, has struck a universal chord and has brought worldwide fame to its main exponents, Ivan Generalic (1914–92), Ivan Rabuzin (1919– ), and Ivan Lackovic-Croata
