History
In 229 BC, Croatia's native Illyrians lost their land to the Roman empire - in Ad 285, Emperor Diocletian built the palace fortress in Split, now the greatest Roman ruin in eastern Europe. The Western Roman empire collapsed in the 5th century, and around 625, Slavic tribes migrated to Croatia from present-day Poland. The Croatian tribe moved into what is now Croatia, occupying the former Roman provinces of Dalmatian Croatia and Pannonian Croatia to the northeast. The two provinces were united in 925 into a single kingdom which prospered into the 12th century. In 1242 a Tatar invasion devastated Croatia. In the 16th century, as the Turks threatened to take over the Balkans, northern Croatia turned to the Habsburgs of Austria for protection, remaining under their influence until 1918. Meanwhile, the Dalmatian coast was taken by Venice in the early 15th century and held until the end of the 17th century, when it was taken by Napoleonic France and made part of the Illyrian provinces (along with Istria and Slovenia). In 1941 Germany invaded Yugoslavia and set up a fascist puppet government (the Ustashe) in Croatia. The Ustashe tried to expel all Serbs from Croatia, and when this didn't work they set the pattern for ethnic cleansing by murdering around 350,000 ethnic Serbs, Jews and Roma. Not all Croats agreed with this policy, and many joined with the communist partisans to overthrow the Ustashe. By the time the war ended, about a million people had died in Croatia and Bosnia-Hercegovina.

BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... CROATIA Croatia's history as an independent nation dates back to the 10th century. In 1102, Hungary's king began to rule over the Croats. From the 1300s on, Croatia, together with Hungary and Serbia, represented Europe's defensive wall against the encroaching Ottoman empire. In 1526, the region was added to the Habsburg dynasty, coming under Austrian control. After the collapse of the Habsburgs during the first World War, Croatia became part of Yugoslavia but chafed under Serbian control. During World War II, the Croats engaged in "ethnic cleansing" such that about 100,000 Serbs and Jews were murdered in Croatia. In 1946, the Croats joined the newly re-established Yugoslavia (Tito was himself a Croat). They declared their secession from the republic in 1991 and war broke out. In 1996, the Yugoslav-Croat war was ended with Yugoslavia recognizing formal borders for Croatia and establishing diplomatic relations.

A Hrvstako Dombranstvo (Home Defense or Home Army) was formed. Many of the officers had been in the Yugoslavian military. Some German tanks and Hungarian CV 33 and CV 35 tankettes (originally purchased from Italy ) were supplied. By November 1941 the forces were expanded to 6 divisions, and by the end of the war they reached 16 divisions. Most were unreliable as desertion was quite high.

The centralizing and Germanizing tendencies of the Hapsburgs, however, severely weakened the power of the Croatian nobility and awakened a national consciousness. During the 19th cent. Hungary imposed Magyarization on Croatia and promulgated (1848) laws that seriously jeopardized Croatian autonomy within the Hapsburg empire. Joseph

ENGLISH HRVATSKI History of coffee ombre qhaweh , or "the wine of Arabia." Coffee began to be popular in what is now the United States during the mid-1600s in New York. Within a couple of decades, coffee-houses on the English model began to flourish as coffee's popularity spread throughout New England too. The earliest written comments about coffee were made in the 10th century by Rhazes, an Arabian physician. Ludwig Roselius, a German coffee importer, discovered decaffeinated coffee by accident in 1903. He tested a sea-water damaged shipment and noted most of the caffeine was gone from the beans. This prompted him to invent a method of extracting caffeine from coffee beans, and he named his new product Sanka derived from the French sans caffeine meaning "without caffeine." The first coffee-houses in Constantinople (or Istanbul) opened around 1550 and were called "schools of wisdom." You could find music, games, or discussions on poetry, politics and more in these elaborately designed establishments. Honoré de Balzac consumed 20-30 cups of coffee each day and believed it genuinely stimulated ideas for his writings. The original iced coffee was a French invention called

History of Croatia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The Croats settled in present-day Croatia in the 6th century. They were Christianized in the 9th century, but preserved autonomy from Rome until the 1000s. Although country was recognized as independant dukedom in 879, the first King of Croatia, Tomislav , was crowned in 925, having created a sizeable state, including most of Croatia, Slavonia Dalmatia , and Bosnia and Herzegovina . After the last king, Zvonimir, had died in 11 CT AD, Croatian lords recognized a common king for Croatia and Hungary (Ladiszlav I.) in treaty called "Pacta Conventa" (1102), thus making a personal union with Hungary. The two crowns would remain connected until the end of World War I. After the 1526 Battle of Mohacs , the Hungarian dynasty was extinguished, and Croatian nobility elected the Austrian Ferdinand Habsburg king. During the next 200 years, the

The first Scout units were established in late 1913 and 1914. The Scout Association of Croatia has been a co-founder of the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1922.
Scouting almost vanished as a result of World War I. The Scout Association of Croatia was kept alive by being members of the Scout Association of the Kingdom of Jugoslavia, which was dictated by the law at the time. Although Croatian Scouts have been dropped from the membership rolls of WOSM in 1951, the organization did not stop its work. When communism fell in 1989, Croatia declared itself an independent nation and received recognition by numerous western nations. The Scout Association of Croatia did likewise. According to the democratic changes in Croatia, The Scout Association of Croatia returned to its roots as voluntary non-political, educational organization for young people. It became fully prepared to meet their needs in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential as individuals. Their goals are to help the youth of Croatia become responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities. Varied activities in nature, challenges and adventures, contacts to different people and different cultures enable them to respect those differences as a precious heritage of mankind.

When you meet a new friend or colleague, you are necessarily confronted with his cultural and historical background, peculiarities of his own, that are sometimes difficult to conceive. Having this in mind, we believe you will understand our wish to give you a better insight into what could be called a Croatian cultural heritage, at least in a rapid and sketchy way. The connections with other European cultures are, as you will see, deep and longstanding. We shall also try to intersperse this hypertext with some interesting facts by which Croatia is recognizable. In short, we start by describing an extremely complex and interesting entity, unique in Europe - the Republic of Croatia, or in Croatian - Republika Hrvatska HR

Gibonni: “Dvije duse” [Two Souls] Croatian History The documented history of Croatia begins with Greek colonies established along the Dalmatian coast beginning with the fourth century BC. The interior was then dominated by tribal peoples, with the Celts most significant just before the Roman conquest. The Celtic Norican Kingdom, which covered modern Austria, Slovenia and part of northern Croatia, briefly survived the conquest as a Roman tributary.
Slavic migrations reached Croatia beginning in the 6th century, some possibly invited by the weakening Byzantine Empire to defend the frontier against other invaders. About 876-879, Croatian rulers established separate states along the Adriatic coast and inland in Slavonia (former Roman Pannonia). About 910-914, Tomislav became ruler of Croatian Dalmatia, and united it with Slavonia. Tomislav is said to have been crowned Croatia’s first king in 924 or 925. After his death, a series of civil wars weakened central authority and lost peripheral territories including Bosnia.
Dalmatia was only partly under Croatian control. In the late 900s, Byzantine Emperor Basil II, under threat from the new Bulgarian Empire, appointed the flourishing trading center of Venice to defend the Empires remaining Dalmatian ports. In response, the southern Dalmatian port and rival trading center of Ragusa or Dubrovnik reasserted a direct Byzantine link to avoid falling under Venetian control. About 1019, after the Byzantine defeat of Bulgaria, Venice was forced to return the
