H istory of T he C ravat Many events in the history of mankind eventually fade into oblivion, but others, leave their indelible marks for the entire world to see. More than 350 years ago, the Croats initiated one such influential occurrence. Although started in the 17th century in a small region on the Adriatic coast, the consequences of this event are still very much evident the world over. 600 million people now wear the ubiquitous symbol of Croatia around their necks, close to their hearts. Did you know that Croatia is the mother country of the necktie? In his book, La Grande Histoire de la Cravate (Flamarion, Paris, 1994), François Chaille tells us about the appearance of this article of clothing and how it became fashionable. "… Around the year 1635, some six thousand soldiers and knights came to Paris to give their support to King Louis XlV and Cardinal Richelieu. Among them were a great number of Croatian mercenaries led by a ban, or Croatian viceroy. The traditional outfit of these Croats aroused interest on account of the unusual and picturesque scarves distinctively tied about their necks. The scarves were made of various cloths, ranging from coarse material for common soldiers, to fine cotton and silk for officers. This elegant "Croatian style" immediately enamoured the French, who were delighted by the new article of clothing, which had been previously unknown in Europe. Around the year 1650, during the reign of Louis XIV, the Croatian scarf was accepted in France, above all in court, where military ornaments were much admired. The fashionable expression, ’a la croate’, soon evolved into a new French word, which still exists today: la cravate. This innovation symbolized the height of culture and elegance. On his return to England from exile, Charles II brought with him this new word in fashion. Over the next ten years, this fashion novelty spread across Europe, as well as across the colonies on the American continent..."

Part of the Slavic Knowledge/Slavenski Znanost Project Croatia is a small country with a big heritage. Did you know that Saint Jerome and Joseph Haydn were both Croats? Did you know the country boasts many Roman ruins? That for centuries Croatia successfully warred against Venice for control of the eastern Adriatic? That the neck tie (cravat) is of Croatian origin? Croatians are proud of their heritage, and there are many fine websites available because of this! Dubrovnik is a very old port city in southern Dalmatia. This is a collection of articles on the history, culture, and daily life of medieval Croatia. It is designed to be a resource for historical recreation that will help make having a Croatian persona more fun. We hope you will be enriched through this page, and that you may find comments or resources to help enrich this page for others. Maintained by Walraven van Nijmegen vespirus@socrates.berkeley.edu

Jews lived in Slovenia from the 13th century until they were expelled in 1496 by Emperor Maximilian I of Austria. The biggest rabbinical center was at Maribor (Marburg) in the Styria district. Maribor had a "Jewish Street" as early as 1277 near the river Drava (Drau) and a synagogue inside the walled city. Rabbi Israel Isserlein taught there. His official title was "Landesrabbiner fuer Steiermark, Krain, und Korushka." He was succeeded by his pupil R. Joseph b. Moses. Other Jewish communities existed at Ptuj (Poetovia), Celje, Radgona, and Ljubljana. Jews were engaged in viticulture, and traded in horses and cattle. top

All Updates Welcome Home Registration Submission/ Guidelines Program Schedule Tracks/Chairs Sponsors Croatia Tourism Photos Links Hotel About Croatia Croatia has a deep and long-standing marketing tradition. Nestled at the crossroads of Europe (link to map of Europe maps of Croatia ), much of present-day Croatia, particularly Istria and Dubrovnik, was a pillar of the Renaissance. Records indicate the person who opened the East to spice and silk trading, Marco Polo, was originally from the Island of Korcula, on the Dalmatian coast. Croatian universities had marketing and commerce curricula over 400 years ago, and even when Croatia was a Republic in the former Yugoslavia, it was known as a European leader in marketing education, innovation and practice. Because of its rich history in international trade and commerce and because of its strategic "crossroads" location, Croatia is an amalgam of many cultural influences. Consider that Croatia actually has 2 names. Croatia is the Latin name for the country and the name most people know. However, Croatians, primarily a Slavic people, use the Slavic name for their country, Hrvatska. This name is pronounced Her-vaht-ska, with the primary accent on the second syllable, a secondary accent on the last syllable and a slight trill of the r. The people refer to themselves as Hrvati. History
It is in fact very little known about ninjutsu in public, therefore there are people who think that it's just one art. But ninjutsu 's made of different Ryus (styles, or schools), and each of them has it's own techniques and teachings. Every school can be recognized by it's specialities. In the past many schools existed, but many of them disappeared also, because they didn't have any inheritors. The schools were in most cases passed on inside of one family, from father to son, or to the teacher's best student. We can divide them in two groups: schools in Iga and Koga regions of Japan. Those two were provinces where many schools developed , and we know today of Iga Ryu, Momochi Ryu, Genjitsu Ryu, Kumogakure Ryu, Gyokko Ryu

History People don't know very much about the art itself. First case of mentioning ninjutsu was in the year of 520.
In time when Shoguns (military rulers of Japan) ruled, Japan was divided in dosens of provinces, which was ruled by daimyos , military comanders. Wars between this daimyos were very often. Their armies fought one another, and many warriors - samurais died in those battles. For a samurai , to die while fighting for his lord was in fact one of the greatest honours, beacuse that's what their code Bushido , The Warrior's Path, ordered them to do. But for the special purposes, daimyos used ninja warriors, beacuse they weren't limited with the Bushido code like the samurais
    Ninjas
worked on a special missions, like for example espionage, all kinds of diversions, sabotages, assasinations of enemy commanders, etc. Their code was to complete the task given to them, by any means.

By the next day, several people were being interviewed by police in connection with the outrage, but no one has claimed responsibility. Suspicion falls on hardline nationalist and right-wing groups, tolerated by the previous regime of Franjo Tuđman but opposed by the new government. These groups have been vocal in their criticism of the 'disloyalty' and 'treachery' of the new government, especially in relation to co-operation with the war crimes tribunal in The Hague. During the Tuđman era there were repeated attempts to minimize the details of a bitter history of Croatia's fascist government during the German occupation. The monument was erected in 1950 in the Mirogoj Cemetery above the graves of prominent anti-fascists from the time of the partisan struggle against the Germans during the Second World War. Prime Minister Ivica Račan has condemned the act as 'terrorism' and promised that everything would be done to find the perpetrators. The Union of Anti-Fascist Fighters condemned the attack as 'a political diversion by those who cannot accept the democratic transformation' of the country.

    Countdown: Next outdoor season
Club History Thunder Bay Croatia has been an integral part of the local soccer community for the last thirty-three years. The Club officially came into being on March 17, 1968, when a handful of newly-arrived Croatian youngsters, brought together by their love for soccer, succeeded in getting a local branch of the United Croats of Canada to partly donate, partly loan $500.00 for their first uniforms and registration fees. The club undertook some steps for the 1994 season that enabled us to field a much younger team. As a result of an agreement with Volunteer Pool Soccer Club and the Croatian-Canadian Sports Association, the 1993 Under-17 Champions, V.P. Tornados, became V.P. Croatia to play for the first time in the mens league in the 2nd Division. The Tornados in 1993 merged with the V.P. Kicks. Both the Kicks and the Tornados were coached and managed by Croatia Soccer Club personnel since 1988.
After playing one season in the 2nd Division, Croatia quickly moved up to the 1st Division in 1995. The team was made up at this time by mostly 17 year olds. Croatia competed in two out-of-town tournaments that year, finishing third in Burnsville, Minnesota and winning the Under-19 Division in the Winnipeg Golden Boy Soccer Tournament (the first Ontario team to win that division).
