  • Knitting dates very early in the history of man. Actual fragments can only be traced to 200 AD, but these fragments show great sophistication and understanding of the craft, causing historians to believe that the craft originated much earlier.
Knitting has undergone a gender change. It started out as a craft mainly pursued by men. Sailors and traders from Arabia were instrumental in passing on this knowledge to the rest of the world. It remained predominately a man's craft for centuries. Today, although many men are now accomplished knitters, a greater number of women then men knit.
A yarn winder is a funky, two-piece contraption that enables you to easily wind skeins of yarn into balls. You secure one piece to one end of a table; secure a second piece to the other end of the table; fit the skein onto the first piece; crank the handle; and wind the yarn from one piece to the other. Sound complex? For now, use a doorknob.
Superwash wool is wool specially treated to be machine washed and dried without incident. Superwash is a wonderful choice for knitting baby clothes: You get the warmth and comfort of wool without troubling a new mother with time-consuming fabric care.

Small Favors: Missourians crocheting for charity
I was surfing the net the other day, and found a website that really got my attention: It's a Michigan group that donates handmade garments and blankets for preemies. Like a bludger between the eyes, it struck me: I'm constantly crocheting. To the point I've got mountains of afghans in my house. Why not do something for someone else? I started searching the web for similar groups active in Missouri, looking especially for my hometown, Springfield. Over half the links I found were broken lots of "404 Page Not Found" messages, etc. Below are the working links to groups, not listed in any particular order. Warm Up America This project lets people create one or more 7" by 9" piece, crocheted or knitted, which will be joined with others to make a full blanket. Crocheting is the best way to get rid of loops. Click here for a video on crocheting loops. Some people use crocheting to tighten roots but it will actually hurt your dreads in the end. Roots that are tightened by crocheting turn into dreads that look like braids and never lock up. They look like braids and never lock up because the hair is twisted so tightly that it can't form knots, therefore it can't dread and lock up. The best way to tighten roots is clockwise rubbing. 78. History Of Crocheting
A 'lil Bit of History on the Art of crocheting by Dee Stanziano, Little obtain. The hobby of crocheting also transcends between the ages.
    http://members.aol.com/Crochetwithdee/history.html
A 'lil Bit of History on the Art of Crocheting
by Dee Stanziano Little is known of it's earliest history, but it is believed that the earliest crocheted projects were to have been made by finger crocheting (meaning the use of fingers instead of the traditional hook that we use today). During the Renaissance period, both upper class and lower class women crocheted several strands of thread (like macrame) to produce lace-like fabrics, imitating European lace. It was not until about the mid 1800s, when printed materials became more mass produced, that the popularity of Crocheting excelled. Usually in magazines or books, printed patterns for various crocheted items made it easier, and more popular, to produce Crocheted products. World War II though, nearly brought this art form to a halt due to shortages in available materials. It's popularity sprung back to life during the 1970s when it became extremely popular to wear Crocheted items. Today, according to a study done by Research Inc. for Craft Yarn Council of America, 34 million women in 1994 crocheted or knitted. In 2002, some 38 million women do. Compared to today's Crocheting hooks which are mostly mass-produced and made of steel, aluminum, or plastic, vintage Victorian hooks were handmade, usually with materials such as: real ivory, brass, various woods, and other bone material. Most vintage hooks were ornately carved, including those with beautiful Mother of Pearl. It is believed that the more ornately carved crocheting hooks had a higher likelihood of being a wedding gift.

    Crocheting Tip's
    starching tip's
1.)This is what I do with my doilies when I'm done crocheting them: I iron it -with steam on- until it lays flat and is shaped correctly. After I'm done ironing, I let it cool completely. Then I use spray starch on it and iron again. Let it cool completely. I never mess with pins and boiled starch, and they always turn out beautifully. I can wash, dry (and iron and restarch) when needed.
2.)Use plain old starch if it is something u may want to wash later. For items such as tree ornaments, use l/2 water and l/2 Elmers glue.
3.)Stiffner for snowflakes..Use a 2 to1 White glue and water as a stiffener. Soak well, squeeze out excess, and pin to saran covered cardboard or styrofoam. It works well and the snowflakes don't turn yellow.
4.)Use equal parts of boiling water and sugar. Mix them together so that the sugar dissolves all the way and when its cooled you soak your piece in it and squeeze out the excess. lay out on several thicknesses of towels and pin in place to dry. If it's too stiff just add less sugar until you find the stiffness you like..
5.)The best thing I have used to stiffen items is the old recipe of sugar and water. 2 cups of sugar to 1cup of water. Bring water to boil, stir in sugar, continue to stir until it is clear. Turn heat off and dip items and/or soak. Pull out with clean thongs, spread over board with wax paper on it. Let dry. Depending on the item, 24hr. to a couple of days. I would rather use this than any other
