Genetically modified crops and the countryside
BBSRC-funded research at the New Frontiers in Science Exhibition, Royal Society, 6 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AG. Wednesday 16 Thursday 17 June 1999, 10.00-16.30
The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) is presenting some current research at BBSRC-sponsored institutes into the environmental impact of genetically modified (GM) crops. Come and talk to the scientists who carry out this work, and find out more about on-going research in this area. The display forms part of the New Frontiers in Science exhibition at the Royal Society. You are invited to attend the media preview at 9.30 am on Wednesday 16 June, during which the exhibition will be formally opened by Lord Puttnam, Chairman, National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA). The BBSRC display covers current research into: 1. Predictability and inserted gene (transgene) stability

Growing Media are ridgid, open-celled, water absorbing foams specially designed for optimal callus and root formation. Currently being used in New Zealand by commercial growers for the following crops:-
  • Roses Olives Herbs New Zealand Natives Poinsettias New Guinea Impatiens Fuschia Geraniums Spathiphylum Ficus Benjamina Lettuce Tomatoe Gypsophilia Leucadendron and many more!
The performance of these media is due, in part to the unique cell structure which closely resembles the cellular structure of the plant itself. The composition of the foams gives density (weight) for holding power and capillary action for feeding water to inserted cuttings. These media offer the propagator the following advantages:
  • Optimal balance of air and water.
Low cation exchange capacity allows rapid nutrient availability without danger of salt accumulation.
    Stabilised pH.
Growing Media are inert and, when received, are free of pathogenic organisms and require no further sterilisation. They can be used directly from the carton. In addition, the product offers the grower these important benefits:

Rusts loom in southern wheat and barley crops
Media release : 12 July 2002
The Department of Agriculture has issued a general rust alert for southern areas following the early detection of leaf and stem rust in the southern wheatbelt of Western Australia. Growers and agronomists on the south coast are beginning to report occurrence of early rust infections on May sown crops. Department Development Officer Sandra Brown said rust in young crops at this time of year indicates the potential for a significant rust epidemic on the south coast, if spring conditions are sufficiently moist to sustain an outbreak. Ms Brown said that reports of leaf rust in wheat had risen in the last two weeks with findings now from the Esperance region along the south coast to Albany and as far north as the Lake Grace district. "Despite the dry start to the season, some early crops have been established and these are at a stage where initial infections of leaf rust are becoming apparent. In some cases, the infection is well advanced and readily detected, particularly in early sown Stiletto wheat crops," Ms Brown said. "In terms of early rust occurrence, the situation is similar to 1999 when the last major rust outbreak occurred.

Net blotch prominent in northern barley crops
Media release : 15 August 2002
The Department of Agriculture is encouraging barley growers to inspect their crops for net blotch after the widespread discovery of the disease across the Northern Agricultural Region. Department of Agriculture research officer Ciara Stockdale said that although the disease could spread from infected barley stubbles, it was suspected that this year some of the outbreaks were due to infected seed. There are two types of net blotch – a net form and a spot form. It was the net form that was found at Mingenew, Mullewa, Morowa, Moora, Three Springs and Yuna. "Net form net blotch first develops as small, dark brown spots, which elongate and may produce fine, dark brown streaks along and across the leaves, creating a distinctive net-like pattern," she said. "Severely affected leaves wither rapidly, and leaf sheaths and heads can become affected." Ms Stockdale said that early infection might be confused with the spot form of net blotch.

Thursday, June 28, 2001 CALL FOR OPEN MINDS ON GM CROPS AND BIOTECHNOLOGY Professor Stephen Powles an agricultural scientist at The University of Western Australia has called on both city and rural Australians to have open minds on biotechnology and the value of genetically modified (GM) crops. Professor Powles warned of the dangers of 'fiction winning over fact' in the community's understanding of the issue. "Currently, in my view, there is not a balanced public debate on the pros and cons of biotechnology, including GM crops. There is far too much misinformation presented as fact by opponents of biotechnology," he said. "Tags such as 'Frankenstein Foods' are incorrect and contribute unnecessarily to public concerns and misinformation. The majority of informed Australians might question whether these criticisms are justified. "As a civilised society with a great depth of goodwill, scientific talent and common sense, we are well placed to consider the biotechnology issues objectively. I am concerned at how the issue is portrayed negatively at present. We must all evaluate biotechnology and its use for GM crops in the open-minded manner that Australians are renowned for. "I believe that when presented with balanced viewpoints, and with the well developed regulatory process of the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator, many Australians will recognise that this technology is being carefully evaluated.

The environmental safety of GM crops
The potential impact of GM crops on the countryside has been the subject of independent research over the past decade, including fundamental studies into the nature of transferred genes, how they are regulated and work inside the plant, and what happens when they are transferred between organisms. This research will continue to provide basic scientific evidence to inform decisions about the regulatory process and commercial planting of GM crops. The research includes:
  • predicting the behaviour and stability of transferred genes over several generations; evaluating their potential to interact with other genes in the plant, and to be transferred by hybridisation from one plant to another of the same or different species; and assessing their possible impact on the wider environment, for example on wild plants and beneficial species.

Scientists issue statement on GM crops
Tuesday, July 16, 2002 Adelaide scientists are angry at the proposed introduction of two Bills to South Australian Parliament that would impact on the research and commercialisation of genetically modified (GM) crops. The scientists say some MPs supporting the Bills have ignored offers of more information about GM crops. The group of scientists includes Australian and world leaders in their fields, from the University of Adelaide, the Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Australian Weed Management and the CRC for Molecular Plant Breeding. They say a Canadian farmer, Mr Percy Schmeiser, brought to Australia to promote the anti-GM line, has made misleading and false claims about GM crops, and that some South Australian politicians continued to support Mr Schmeiser despite his claims being discredited by the Federal Court of Canada. South Australian Democrats MLC Mr Ian Gilfillan is expected to introduce a Bill to State Parliament today (Tuesday, July 16) for a five-year moratorium on GM crops. It is believed that No Pokies MLC Mr Nick Xenophon will also introduce a related bill.

Genetic tool for building better crops wins researcher national technology award
19 February 1998 A University of Adelaide researcher has won a prestigious Australian Technology Award for the development of cereal breeding technology which has given Australia an international edge. Dr Peter Langridge, Associate Professor in the University's Department of Plant Science, was honoured for Excellence in the Development of Technology from a University. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Adelaide, Professor Mary O'Kane, said the award was a wonderful recognition of Dr Langridge's status as one of the world's leading molecular biologists in this field. "Peter Langridge and his team based at the University's Waite campus have developed a technology which puts Australia way ahead of its international competitors," Professor O'Kane said. "He is a highly-creative researcher who really has lead the way in developments in this field."
