Laboratory of Crystallography
Structure analysis of aperiodic and periodic crystals
This is a home page of the research group of Dr. Vaclav Petricek in the Institute of Physics . New page of the Czech and Slovak Crystallographic Association is now maintained at www.xray.cz This laboratory is specialized in structure analysis of aperiodic and periodic crystals. During last 10 years we were developing methods for structure determination of modulated and composite crystals. These methods were used to create software JANA , which is currently one of the leading systems in the field. Our current project is focused on generalization and utilization of JANA in order to develop a system with unique handling of 3-dimensional as well as multidimensional structures, single domain, multidomain or intergrowth crystals, single crystals or powders, nuclear or magnetic structures. We expect our system will minimize barriers between crystallography of periodic and aperiodic crystals. Other activities:
  • Study of phase transitions and of twinning due to phase transitions.
  • 3. CMPHome

This research theme in the Department is focused around the activities of: Dr Dario Alfè Dr Rob Bell Dr John Brodholt Professor Richard Catlow ... Dr Kate Wright Our is unique in the UK in combining high P/T research (based on diamond- and multi-anvil cells), with computational mineral physics. The research involves a close collaboration between our laboratories in UCL and the David Faraday Research Laboratory in the Royal Institution , formally associated with the Department. We study industrially important materials, and mantle/core minerals (particularly their equations of state, defect and rheological properties). Some recent highlights include: First integrated application of neutron diffraction and acoustic emission to rock physics, and the microscopic origin of thermal cracking in rock ( Meredith, Wood , GRL in press W e have recently published papers in Nature and Physical Review Letters describing the first ab initio free energy calculations on high P/T solid and liquid Fe and its alloys, to determine (i) the viscosity of the outer core, (ii) the high P melting temperature of Fe, and (iii) the probable composition of the outer and inner core ( Alfe Price Vocadlo Our calculations on the defect properties of perovskite in Nature show that Al could have a major effect on its elastic properties ( Brodholt Our high-pressure, electrical conductivity measurements, reported in

The examples of structures and their Fourier transform, presented in this tutorial, have grown from courses on diffraction physics taught at the Department of Crystallography Department of Crystallography interactive examples were first developed for a class on scattering taught at the Physics department at Michigan State University . You have to have javascript enabled in order to run the interactive examples. News and downloading: Contents: All examples have been calculated by use of DISCUS , a program written to simulate any type of structure and to calculate the corresponding Fourier transform in any section of reciprocal space. For details on the concept of this tutorial and how to integrate it into lectures, see P ROFFEN, TH.

The major activity is related to the physical estimation of triplet phases from three-beam interference experiments in non-perfect crystals. Applications of these phases include: solution of the phase problem in macromolecular crystallography, studies of structural phase transitions. Other research activities involve studies of chalcogen-containing organic materials with potential for electron conduction. This group collaborates with Swiss and other Norwegian user groups at the Swiss-Norwegian Beam Lines at ESRF. It is noted that the group's need for beamtime could not have been met through the Norwegian membership in ESRF alone. Editor: Head of Dept. Contact address: webmaster@phys.ntnu.no

Rapid x-ray characterization of structure and innovative ways of initiating and controlling reactions are shedding new light on protein function by enabling the visualization of macromolecules in action.
Eric A. Galburt and Barry L. Stoddard
In addition to increasing our understanding of the physical chemistry of catalysis, time-resolved crystallography experiments have many practical applications. For example, studies of protein functioning in disease-causing organisms could lead to ways to fight illness. Understanding the mechanisms by which natural proteins work should aid in designing novel protein catalysts to make industrial processes more efficient (for a good review of biocatalysis, see ref. 2

Publications X-Ray Crystallography And Biophysics Professor Woolfson , Drs Main and Greenall The focus of the work is on the development of methods for the determination of crystal structures and the application of mathematical methods to the structure and dynamics of biological molecules. The crystallography work allows the structure of complicated proteins to be determined from X-ray diffraction data, using computational methods for reconstructing the phases of the diffracted waves, and also image processing techniques for enhancing the original diffraction image. The biophysics research examines, through computer simulation, the motion of the DNA molecule and how it interacts with its environment; this information is of central relevance to modern biology.
