Research in Ferroelectrics and Crystallography
Pam Thomas In the Ferroelectrics and Crystallography Group, we are principally interested in the Structural Physics, by which we mean physics at the atomic level, of Ferroelectirc crystals. Whilst Ferroelectrics have many device applications that are of interest to our work, that also are also of fundamental interest because of the interesting physics that they display. We concentrate on trying to create atomic-level models of how and why ferroelectrics display the properties that that do through a combination of experimental measurments, modelling and simulations. Periodic poling for the ultra-violet Aim: to extend the principles and practice of periodic poling of ferroelectric crystals to the ultra-violet end of the spectrum through the study of ferroelectric fluorides and chlorides. Field: both fundamental materials physics and technological applications in optics. Techniques: dielectic measurements, ferroelectric switching and hysteresis loop tracing; advanced x-ray imaging and diffraction both at Warwick and at ESRF, Grenoble. Interesting physics: A view down the [001] of the tetragonal phase of the lead-free perovskite Na Bi TiO as determined by high-temperature neutron diffraction at the I.L.L., Grenoble.

Name Change from Physical Crystallography Group of the IOP to Structural Physics Group
The process of changing our identity from PCG to Structural Physics is underway. The next step is that the proposal be taken to the Condensed Matter and Materials Physics (CMMP) divisional meeting, which will take place some time in September. Our representative at the divisional meeting is Dr. Malcolm McMahon of Liverpool University. No problems with the name-change are envisaged, but one of the other groups may come up with some objection at the meeting, so we will have to wait and see what transpires....
Autumn Meeting:
Structural Physics of Functional Materials, University of Warwick, 25/11/98
The overall aim of the meeting is to demonstrate how crystallography, structural physics and structural science in general underpin the study of a range of technologically-important "functional" materials. The choice of the meeting topic and the title have been informed by current developments within both EPSRC and the Institute of Physics. Within EPSRC, there is an initiative to promote Crystallography or Structural Science as a discipline in its own right and, to reinforce this, our speakers have been drawn from Departments of Physics, Chemistry and Materials. Within the Institute of Physics, we are going through the process of changing our identity from the Physical Crystallography Group to the Structural Physics group in a bid to reflect more accurately the activities of a wide number of our members. The topic "Structural Physics of Condensed Matter" now appears as an EPSRC/IOP heading.

"Her experimental determination of the structure of the benzene ring by x-ray diffraction, which showed that all the ring C-C bonds were of the same length and all the internal C-C-C bond angles were 120 degrees, had an enormous impact on organic chemistry." Professor K. N. Trueblood, UCLA.
Some Important Contributions
Confirmed experimentally the ring structure of benzene
"Kathleen Lonsdale had a profound influence on the development of X-ray crystallography and related fields in chemistry and physics. Very few have made so many important advances in so many different directions."
    J. M. Robertson,
Contributions to X-ray crystallography:
"As a physicist and mathematician by training, Kathleen Lonsdale's first major contribution was a profound and systematic study of the theory of space groups , methods for their determination, and the possibilities of molecular symmetry that are involved. This work was published with W. T. Astbury in 1924. ... A later continuation and extension of this work consisted of the structure factor tables published in 1936 ..., and the many volumes of the International Tables for X-Ray Crystallography published from 1952 onwards. These volumes, of which Kathleen Lonsdale was principal editor, are in constant use today and form an essential tool for crystal structure determination. " J. M. Robertson, ibid.
