TV Schedule THE BASICS: Races are split into two disciplines short track at the Salt Lake Ice Center and long track at the Utah Olympic Oval. There are four events each for men and women in short track and five events each in long track. Long track pairs two skaters at a time racing against the clock. Short track is more like a roller derby race. U.S. FORECAST: Here's a tip. If you want to impress your neighbors, start talking about Apolo Anton Ohno in the next day or two. Short track is more like a roller derby race. U.S. FORECAST: Here's a tip. If you want to impress your neighbors, start talking about Apolo Anton Ohno in the next day or two. Because, by next week, the rest of the world will have discovered him. A 19-year-old Japanese-American who was raised by his father in Seattle, Ohno is outgoing, attractive and about to be a star. He should place in all four short-track events and could even sweep gold, becoming this year's Eric Heiden or Bonnie Blair. The one drawback? He still will hear questions about accusations that he gave less than a full effort in a recent qualifying race so his friend, Shani Davis, could leapfrog another skater and make the Olympic team. American men do not look as good in the long track. Casey Fitzrandolph finished sixth in the 500 and seventh in the 1,000 at the Nagano Games. Derek Parra is a contender at 1,500.

Olympic curlers pay tribute to Scotland's sporting greats Wednesday 24 April 2002 Today, Scotland's Curling Olympic champions, led by skip Rhona Martin, visited the temporary Scottish Sports Hall of Fame (SSHOF) exhibition at the Royal Museum in Edinburgh to pay their own personal tribute to Scotland's sporting greats by making their nominations for the SSHOF. In a formal presentation they handed over to the Museum on loan, personal Olympic kit from their historic gold medal winning performance at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games held in Salt Lake City. The skip of the curling team, Rhona Martin said: "Winning gold for Scotland and Team GB was a fabulous feeling. I am delighted to be asked to lend personal Olympic kit to the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame exhibition in which so many of Scotland's sporting greats are profiled. Competing at an Olympic Games is a fantastic experience and I hope seeing some of our Olympic kit up close so soon after our win will help bring the Olympic Games alive for the exhibition's younger visitors."
The exhibition profiles 100 of Scotland's greatest sportsmen and women including 1924 Olympic track gold medallist Eric Liddell, 1967 World Curling champion Chuck Hay and 1994 Commonwealth Games champion Yvonne Murray Mooney MBE. HRH Princess Royal and Sir Jackie Stewart are Patrons of the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame.

NBC Sports to broadcast U.S. and World Curling Championships in 2003 STEVENS POINT, Wis. — NBC Sports will broadcast the U.S. National Curling Championships and World Curling Championships in 2003. The joint announcement was made today by David Garber, Executive Director, USA Curling and Jon Miller, Senior Vice President, Programming, NBC Sports. "Of all the sports and athletes that experienced a rise in popularity during and after the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, the ‘Roarin’ Game’ of curling just may be the one that could still fit into the glass slipper," said Garber. "After sweeping in obscurity for the previous 500 years, curling was transported into the light in February. With coverage on NBC’s cable networks, MSNBC and CNBC, fans were drawn to the sport and it created a buzz that resulted in tremendous interest at local curling clubs across the country." NBC’s Olympic curling commentators, Don Chevrier (play-by-play) and Don Duguid (analyst) will provide commentary for the National and World Championships on NBC. "In many ways, curling was the great new discovery for the American audience during our coverage of the Salt Lake Winter Games," Miller said. "It’s a unique sport that has the raw materials to be a cult hit; it is ready-made for television. While most Americans didn't know much about the sport, Don and Don provided a healthy dose of explanation along with their colorful insight."

Curling Through the Years

Encyclopedia: Curling
The sport of curling dates as far back as the early 1500s in Scotland and was reportedly brought to North America by British troops in the 1700s during the Revolutionary War. Curling made its Olympic debut as a demonstration sport at the original Olympic Games in 1924 . It kept the same classification in the 1932 Lake Placid Games but then went on a 56-year Olympic hiatus, until it returned as a demonstration sport at the 1988 Calgary Games . Curling made its debut as an official medal sport at the 1998 Nagano Games
Ten men's teams and ten women's teams will compete in Salt Lake City.
As far as the actual game goes, think shuffleboard on ice combined with the strategy of a game of bowls or bocce.
Each match is made up of ends, or periods, where two teams of four players each take turns sliding a 42-pound polished granite stone down a sheet of ice towards a bullseye made up of four concentric circles. This bullseye, which is 12 ft in diameter, is known as the "house" and its center the "tee." The tee is located 126 ft from where the shooter starts.
When the stone is released by the shooter, it is done with a special technique that involves a twist of the wrist. Like a bowling ball hooks (or curves) down an alley, so too does the stone as it glides down the ice. This curve is known as the "curl."
