CURLING HOME DRAW TEAMS Joan McCusker has curled for more than 20 years. She is a former member of the Sandra Schmirler Saskatchewan rink that captured gold in Nagano and is considered one of the best ever by many. McCusker won three World Championships (the only rink ever to accomplish the feat) and three Scott Tournament of Hearts (1993, 1994 and 1997), curling second on the Schmirler rink. Mike Harris, a Toronto native, was the Skip of the Canadian team that took home the silver medal at the Nagano Winter Olympics. Team Harris qualified to represent Canada at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games by capturing the Canadian Olympic Curling Trials in November 1997. Harris' full-time job is as a golf professional at the Waterside Golf Academy. Mike and Joan will be joined by CBC's veteran curling commentators, Don Wittman and Mark Lee CURLING TIPS FROM OUR EXPERTS For the beginner curler:
  • Watch for similarities in throwing techniques. Balanced release, square shoulders, eyes remain on the broom at all times. Try to emulate these techniques.

By BILL FLEISCHMAN

During an NBC Sports conference call yesterday about the Winter Olympics, curling was on MSNBC. Normally, even bored afternoon viewers wouldn't watch curling, Canada's version of shuffleboard. However, on television, with an overhead camera, curling is visually appealing. Except for hockey and figure skating, most American fans don't follow Winter Olympic sports. What attracts viewers is that these sports look great on TV. "Because of the somewhat obscure nature of some of these sports federations, it makes them more willing to embrace television and the new technology," said David Neal, Olympics vice president for NBC Sports. "[In] curling, the federation encourages their athletes to wear microphones during competition. Sometimes, it's a good thing it's on cable because the athletes get a little fired up. "Some of these winter sports almost have a boutique feel to them. They make it very easy for us to try out new things that might be more difficult in the summer."

National Sports Federations are an invaluable resource for athletes who perform a specific sport because they give the precise support they need to be the best.
But not every organization in the Canadian Olympic Family represents a recognized Olympic sport. Still, the activities they represent are excellent additions to the Canadian sport and recreation landscape. From water polo to softball and rowing, the organizations in the following list represent both Olympic and Pan American sport alike.

Four of the country's best female curlers joined forces a few years ago to form a "super-rink" of sorts. They uniformly bought into a team concept and swiftly won the national and world titles in 2000, and now Kelley Law's rink is favoured to win the Olympic gold.
Law, Martin survive Canadian Olympic Trials

One of Scotland's most successful exports to Canada, curling has proven to be highly transportable to wintry climes, but Canadians have embraced it over the years as their own. The long list of Canadian champions includes the first women's Olympic curling champion, Sandra Schmirler.
Maybe it's because the world's best curlers have day jobs, don't cut imposing athletic figures and are known for having fun on the ice sheet that some still question whether curling is worthy of its Olympic status. As such, curling may be the most misunderstood of Winter Olympic sports. Find out what puts curlers in a league of their when it comes to strategy, precision, skill, agility and sheer opportunism.

Venue: The Ice Sheet at Ogden
Curling made its debut at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan with the men's and women's tournaments.
At the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, both the men's and women's tournament will consist of 10 teams.
Curling is a competition between two teams with four players each. The game is played on ice, and the two teams take turns pushing a 42-pound stone toward a series of concentric circles. The object is to get the stone as close to the center of the circles as possible. The center of the circles is known as the "tee." A team scores a point for each stone that is closer to the center circle than the opponent's best stone, provided that the stone is within 1.83 meters (6 ft) of the tee. This circular area is known as the "house." It is the scoring zone in curling.
One game consists of 10 "ends." (An end is similar to a baseball inning.) During each end, a team delivers eight stones - two stones per person. The team members deliver the stones in a set order presented to the officials before the game. The score for the end is determined when all 16 stones have been delivered. The team that scores in an end shoots first in the next end and the team with the most points at the conclusion of 10 ends is the winner.

Recommendations Support Key Goal to Win 2010 Winter Olympics
For Immediate Release - April 12, 2001 Calgary/Ottawa
- Canada should push forward with new programs and progressive tax changes to support the spectacular on-going success of our athletes in international winter competition, executives from all national winter sports governing organizations have decided.
The recommendations at the conclusion of the CODA Conference on Winter Sports Excellence came as Canada's winter sport organizations celebrated an unprecedented season of success that ended with elite athletes capturing 178 medals at World Cups and World Championships and 10 World Championship titles. The record total could be increased at the upcoming men's world hockey championships. "The building blocks are in place but there is much more we can do as a nation to support athletes, engage more young people in sport, and capture the international success that is a major source of pride to all Canadians," said John Mills, president of CODA, Canada's largest private funder of winter sport.

Take a close look at the emblem of the XVIII Olympic Winter Games, to be held February 6 to 22 in Nagano, Japan. What do you see? A flower? A snowflake? The emblem's hexagonal shape mirrors the shape of a snowflake, an appropriate symbol for the Winter Games. The shape also resembles the flowering Alpine plant a purposeful symbol underlining the fact that Nagano emphasized environmental considerations in its staging of the Games. But a closer look reveals more! Take a look at the pictograph symbols designed to represent each of the Olympic sports that are part of the Nagano Games. Do you see a few of those symbols (and their shadows) cleverly "disguised" in the emblem? See if your students can pick out the sports represented in the emblem!
