Schmirler led Canada to gold. (Reuters) No one will be trading NHL season tickets for a front-row seat at the next bonspiel, but curling made a successful debut as an Olympic sport. Heading into the Olympics everyone said the Canadian women's team, led by Sandra 'The Curler' Schmirler, was the best in the world. And they proved it by winning the first Olympic curling gold with a 7-4 victory against Denmark. But Canada's favored men's team was upset by Switzerland 9-3 and had to settle for the silver. The American men finished fourth behind Norway.

British curling medal hopes on ice, reports Duncan Mackay

    The Guardian

More than 300 years of Scottish hurting and a day of defeat yesterday have not stopped Hammy McMillan dreaming that curling is coming home. Losing his opening match here against one of the favourites, Canada, did not shake McMillan's belief that he and his rink can win the gold medal. Curling's origins began on frozen Scottish lochs in the 16th century but since it was introduced to North America by Scottish troops in 1760 it has been dominated by Canada, a fact McMillan was sharply reminded of at the Ogden Ice Sheet where a 6-4 defeat maintained Britain's disappointing start to these Olympics.
