How does one begin to describe the heritage of country endowed with 10,000 years of history? Much of it is plainly visible: the ruins of Kourion, with its ancient theatre where concerts and plays still proudly take place, the Sanctuary of Aphrodite, the antiquities of Pafos, the Neolithic settlement of Khirokitia and nine Byzantine churches in the Troodos are part of the World Cultural List of UNESCO. Then there is the beautiful and varied Mediterranean landscape. Archaeology in Cyprus
Customs and traditions
Indeed, the most compelling cultural aspect of Cyprus may be the island itself: The passage of ten millennia has made this small country an endless banquet of history, each civilization comprising another course of the feast. And time has only strengthened the identity of the Cypriots themselves; a people who can read the very same inscriptions on the ancient temple walls their ancestors chiseled so many sunsets ago. In the hills or along the coast, in town or country, wherever you go in Cyprus, the cultural feast will follow

Cypriots are very proud of their cultural heritage, which stretches back more than 9000 years. However, you'll probably find that Cyprus today is more concerned with the events of the last 20 years than those of a millennium ago. The north of the island is busy re-creating itself in the image of Turkey, changing names to Turkish and embracing the life and culture of its northern neighbour. The Republic is also trying to create an independent identity, and many places in the Republic have recently been renamed as well. Whatever the present-day situation may be, Cyprus is littered with reminders of the island's history. Relics from every era - Greek temples, Roman mosaics and 15th-century frescoes - influence the artists of today. Many villages specialise in a particular artform, and as you travel around Cyprus you'll see pottery, silver and copperware, basket weaving, tapestry and Lefkara's famous lacework. Like everything else in Cyprus, religion is split along the Green Line. The northerners are mostly Sunni Muslim, the southerners Greek Orthodox. Food, too, reflects the divide: in the North you'll find mostly Turkish cuisine; in the Republic, Greek. But wherever you are in Cyprus, you'll come across kleftiko (oven-baked lamb) and mezedes (dips, salads and other appetisers). Cyprus is also famous for its fruit, which the government protects with a ban on imported products. You'll find strawberries, stone fruit, melons, prickly pear, citrus and grapes.

Welcome to Cyprus
Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean and is located in the northeastern area of the Mediterranean Sea.
With a population of only 700 000, large areas of the island remain completely unspoiled.
However, as a result of the Turkish invasion of 1974, 37% of the island remains under Turkish rule. The so-called 'Green Line' border that cuts directly through the capital, Nicosia divides the country, now the last remaining divided capital in Europe.
Cyprus is an island steeped in history and has a rich cultural heritage. Visitors and tourists that travel to Cyprus have an overwhelming choice of ancient monuments and archaeological sites to visit. This is particularly so in Paphos, which has been included in UNESCO’s list of World Cultural Heritage sites.
The majority of the population is Greek Cypriot, and they follow the Christian Orthodox religion. The main language spoken is Greek but English is widely spoken, along with German, in the tourist areas.
The unit of currency is the Cyprus pound (current value US$ 0.60) and all major credit cards are accepted. If you like our website, please rate it at

Country Info Cyprus Introduction Cyprus General Data Cyprus Maps Cyprus Culture ... Cyprus Time and Date Cyprus Culture Back to Top The ancient cultural traditions of Cyprus are maintained partly by private enterprise and partly by government activity, especially through the Cultural Services office of the Republic of Cyprus's Ministry of Education and Culture. The office publishes books, awards prizes for literature, and promotes Cypriot publications. Cities have public libraries, as do many rural communities. The government-sponsored Cyprus Theatre Organization stages plays by contemporary Cypriot dramatists as well as classical works. The ancient theatres of Salamis and Soli in the Turkish sector and Curium in the Greek portion have been restored; the one at Curium is used for the staging of a variety of plays, and a Greek theatre has been built at Nicosia The younger generation of Greek Cypriots, having grown up in a relatively peaceful, settled, and prosperous society, continues to maintain aspects of traditional culture but also enjoys more modern international clothing, popular music, and movies. Sports have come to play a major role in the Greek Cypriot community. The government has built stadiums, sports halls, and swimming pools and has subsidized associations and clubs for a wide spectrum of sports; there are a professional league for association football (soccer) and a semiprofessional league for basketball. Cypriots compete in the Olympic Games, and young Cypriots engage in a variety of athletic activities, including archery, bowling, fencing, gymnastics, skiing, tennis, volleyball, and weight lifting. Motorcycle riding, horse racing, and water sports have also become increasingly popular.

WELCOME TO JOHN A. STAVOLA'S HOMEPAGE OF SOUTHERN ITALIAN HISTORY , CULTURE, AND GENEALOGY
DUE SICILIE WHY SOUTHERN ITALY? The regions of Puglia and Campania, located in the southern half of the peninsula known as Italy, are where my
ancestors originated from. Before it's annexation by northern Italy it was an
independent country known as the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Ruled by the Royal House of Bourbon, from the city of Naples ,this kingdom was
also comprised of the island of Sicily, and the regions of Calabria, Basilicata,
Abruzzi, and Molise. Separated by mountain and seabarriers ,differences
in custom and dialect developed which made this area distinct from the north. Indeed ,these barriers also created distinctions from region to region.
The differences between the southern half of the peninsula and the northern
half are now making themselves more prominent due to separatist movements in the north and now in the south. In time culturally
and politically independent states will reemerge in a federated Europe.

Ancient Times Cyprus is an island of oceanic origin which has never been connected to the mainland. In the Pleistocen glacial episodes the minimum distance of Cyprus to the mainland would have been 30 km.
The Stone Age
Neolithic Period I (8th millennium - 4500 BC)
Cyprus, though a small island, has always played an important role in the history of the Mediterranean, far exceeding its size. The first signs of undisputed human activity can be traced back to the 8th millennium BC when the first settlements are encountered. Vestiges of such early communities are found all over the island, such as at Khirokitia , Kalavasos-Tenta, Apostolos Andreas-Kastros, Phrenaros, Petra tou Limniti etc. Neolithic Cypriots built circular houses with small undressed stones for the lower structures and sun-dried mudbricks and clay for the middle and superstructure. The daily life of the people in those neolithic villages was spent in farming, hunting, animal husbandry and the lithic industry, while women were engaged in spindling and weaving cloths, in addition to their probable participation in other activities. The lithic industry was the most individual feature of this aceramic culture and innumerable stone vessels made of grey andesite have been discovered during excavations.
