GEOLOGY - GEOGRAPHY Cyprus is nearly 200 million years old. During the time the continent of Africa has been moving north-eastwards at a speed of about 2 cm. a year and Eurasia eastwards at about 0.3 cm. a year, Cyprus lying in the confrontation zone between these two huge plates. The Troodos mountains (Southern Range) were formed as an ocean ridge at depths of 2 to 4 km, beginning about 85 to 75 million years ago, in the Upper Creataceous period. The Alphine chain of which the GIRNE range (Northern Range) is a part was caused by the folding and fracturing of the Sedimentary rocks that formed on the ocean (Tethys) floor between Africa and Eurasia. The GIRNE range is the backbone of North Cyprus, consisting mainly of marble and dolomite types of hard limestone. Its age is believed to be 100 million years. About two million years ago Cyprus consisted of a chain of islands. The peaks of the Northern Range were separated from the Troodos island to the south by a shallow sea. The land continued to rise and the shallow sea gradually became the MESAORIA plain, making Cyprus one island.

Its neighbouring lands at the nearest coastal points are Turkey 40 miles north, Syria 60 miles east, Lebanon 108 miles south-east, Israel 180 miles south-east and Egypt 230 miles south. Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean. It is smaller than Sicily and Sardinia and larger than Corsica and Crete .The area of the whole island is 3584 sq. miles. (9250 sq. kilometers) Cyprus has been divided into two autonomous states since 1974. This came about by virtue of the linguistic and cultural differences , and as a result of communal friction which lasted for 11 years. (See history) Greek Cypriots occupy the southern and the Turkish Cypriots occupy the northern part of Cyprus. A boundary known as the`Green Line` which runs through Nicosia , the capital of both South and North Cyprus separates the two states. North Cyprus is some 100 miles long , 40 miles across at its widest point and has a total area of 1357 sq. miles or nearly one third of the whole of the island.

GEOGRAPHY AND POPULATION Cyprus is situated in the eastern Mediterranean, lying at the hub of three continents and close to the busy trade routes linking Western Europe with the Arab World and the Far East. Cyprus' total area is 9.25 1 sq kms and is comparable in size to Lebanon in the Middle East or Connecticut in the United States. The island's time zone is exactly 7 hours ahead of New York and 7 hours behind Tokyo. The island enjoys the best type of Mediterranean climate with about 300 days of sunshine per year . The bulk of the rain falls during the period from November to March. The coldest month is January with minimum and maximum mean temperatures of 6 C and 13 C, respectively, while in August, the hottest month, the corresponding minimum and maximum mean temperatures are 21 C and 36 C. GEOGRAPHY The geography of North Cyprus is characterized by a unique blend of mountains, plains, and beaches. The Kyrenia (Five Finger) range, with its magnificent jagged limestone peaks, the highest of which is Mount Icova at 3,357 ft. runs along most of the northern coastline from a startling backdrop. To the east of the island the mountain range loses height as it extends along the narrow peninsula known as Karpas, or more affectionately, `The Panhandle'. It is here that the best beaches of Cyprus can be found, long wide empty bays of the purest sand that strech for miles. To the south of the Kyrenia range lies Nicosia (population 39,000), the capital of North Cyprus, through which runs the boundary, or as it is called `The Green Line' separating the North from South Cyprus.
