These pages are dedicated to the people of Cyprus. Today, the island of Aphrodite is divided by what is known as the 'Green Line'.
Following the Turkish invasion of 1974, the island has been cut almost in half by barbed wire, minefields and sandbags. The people of Cyprus are divided, Turkish Cypriots in the north and Greek Cypriots in the south.
But that is not how it used to be . . . . . . Once another line cut across the island, in roughly the same place as the so-called 'Green Line.
But this line was very different. It was the narrow gauge railway line of the Cyprus Government Railway.
This almost forgotten railway was closed at the end of December 1951. It ran from the port at Famagusta, through Nicosia almost to the port of Morphou. It carried freight, water, passengers, wedding parties and, on festivals, it even carried the revellers.
The train is now gone. The only surviving locomotive stands on a plinth in the town of Famagusta. Today, part of the old track travels through minefields. Through empty UN Zones from the ghost town of Varosha to Nicosia and beyond.
The dying of the railway seemed to symbolise the death of the spirit of unity in Cyprus. The brotherhood of Cypriots that will take perhaps many generations to rebuild. In the wake of the train came paramilitary organisations like EOKA and TMT. A bloody coup that led to war and invasion; suffering, refugees and death.

Cyprus Government Cyprus government is very interesting. According to the Cyprus constitution, governing is to be shared by Turkish and Greek residents. The Vice-President must be Turkish and elected by a Turkish party, while the President of Cyprus must be Greek and elected by Greek citizens. A Turkish invasion in 1974 caused a separation in the Cyprus government. In this invasion the Turkish made a separate government, but the Cypriot government is still controlled by the Greeks.

Turkish Republic Of Northern Cyprus Government Statement
    14 December 1997
At is Luxembourg Summit that took place on 12-13 December 1997, The Greek Cypriot side, in order to remove the internal and external balance established by the 1960 Agreement, destroyed the partnership by force of arms in 1963. Since then there has not been a joint administration in Cyprus, and the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities have lived under their own democratically elected separate administrations. It is an undisputable fact that the Greek Cypriot administration has never exercised sovereignty over the whole of Cyprus or the Turkish Cypriot people. In sum, there is no joint administration enjoying the mandate of both peoples and capable of speaking for both of them, or applying for EU membership and conducting accession negotiations with the EU, on behalf of both peoples or the whole of the island. EU membership of Cyprus can only be discussed and agreed to after an overall settlement, and upon its approval by the two sides through separate referenda, as envisaged in paragraph 92 of the UN Set of Ideas. Furthermore, agreeing to become a member of the EU while Turkey is not a full member but Greece, which has created and perpetuated the Cyprus question, is, and thus destroying the balance between the two motherlands over Cyprus,is no different than agreeing to an indirect unification of Cyprus with Greece or the establishment of a Greek Cypriot republic in the island. In fact, the Greek Cypriot side is openly declaring that the aim behind its aspirations to become a member of the EU is to transform Cyprus into a second Greek state in the Mediterranean.

Cyprus Government Railways Industrial Archaeology The engine no.1 of the last train from Nicosia to Famagusta on 31st December 1951 now rests for display in Polat Pasha Boulevard in Famagusta In the figure above is a sketch of an old railway engine resting on a plinth, and placed here as a memorial to the Cyprus Government Railways (C.G.R.), which ran trains from Famagusta to Nicosia , and beyond to Güzelyurt (Morphou). The building behind the engine is the old Famagusta station which was the terminus of the C.G.R. There are many railway enthusiasts in Britain who worship these old engines as symbols of the past industrial revolution. There is now a division of antiquarians who study old engines, old mills, and the old machinery used one hundred years ago, the subject is Industrial Archeology.
In , the railway construction depot was inside the old walls, opposite the Othello Tower , and now occupied by Desdemona Gardens. In order to give access to the docks three archways were driven into the old Venetian curtain walls and the traces can be seen today. Great care was shown not to use stone for the railway construction from the walls and the ancient buildings although there were rumours that stone was going to be taken from Bellapais Abbey The railway was 37½ miles long, and there were stations at two mile intervals, the names being written in three languages, English, Greek, and Turkish. Speed was from 20 to 30 m.p.h. and the journey to Nicosia took about two hours. Two trains per day; the morning train left at 8:35 a.m. arriving at Nicosia at 10:37 a.m. If you wanted to continue to

Kibrisli Mehmet Emin Pasha's forebears were from Anatolia, and resettledin Cyprus shortly after Selim II's conquest of the island in 1571.
    http://www.cypnet.co.uk/ncyprus/culture/institutions/kibrislipasha/
Cypriot Mehmet Emin Pasha Mansion (Istanbul) The Kibrisli Yali [literally "The Cypriot Mansion"] is one of the largest summerhouses to survive on the Bosphorus, in Istanbul, Turkey. Its rambling architecture mirrors the fluctuating fortunes of the statesman who gave the house its name and his colourful heirs. The yali stands on massive stone foundations built out into the Bosphorus. Architecturally it looks all of a piece, but it was actually built over a hundred years and is now divided into three. The central two storeys are what is left of the original house, though the balcony does not appear in early engravings. The lower windowswere raised to avoid the wash from pass- ing ships. In the selamlik garden, peonies, cedars and palms frame the `Orangery' once in fact lined with sweetly scented lemon trees. From the sea the house looks so much of a piece that one might imagine a single man built it within the space of a few years. In fact it grew over a period of a hundred, from the mid-eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century. Eighty years after Kara Vezir built the yali, his name had been erased from the history books. The house had passed through several hands and was in need of restoration. It was then that the man who gave his name to the yali acqui- red it. Kibrisli Mehmet Emin Pasha, to give him his full name, was one of Turkey's most able nineteenth-century statesmen. Three-times grand vizier, twice first lord of the Admiralty, governor of Edirne and Aleppo, ambassador to London and St Petersburg, once proclaimed "the voice of Law from one end of the empire to the other", he was nevertheless frequently plagued by debt. At his death in 1871 he left a daughter by each of two marriages, an admiring public, few friends and just eighty-one Turkish liras.
