The Reign of Janus Introduction Jacques I died in 1398 and was succeeded by his son Janus. The reign of King Janus for thirty-four years was one long struggle with the Genoese and the Moslems. His first object was to recover, if possible, Famagusta from the Genoese, whose power in Europe had begun to decline. With this object he prepared in 1402 a fleet and a force to besiege Famagusta. To defend it the Genoese sent a small fleet under the admiral, Bucciardo. Hostilities were ended by the mediation of the Grand Master of the Hospitallers and, after making peace, both parties directed their forces against the Moslems. The Genoese ravaged the Syrian coast, while King Janus plundered the shores of Egypt. This drew upon Cyprus the vengeance of the Mamelukes, who were still seeking to retaliate for the sack of Alexandria by Pierre I. In the midst of war, Cyprus was for the third time attacked by plague, and the consequent weakness of the island gave the sultan the opportunity for which he had waited. The Rule of Janus In 1425 the Egyptian fleet appeared off the coast of Cyprus, defeated the Cypriot ships and plundered Larnaca and Limassol. The following year a still larger force seized Limassol and marched on Nicosia.

No enrollment limit, no advance sign up
Participants welcome at individual sessions (series)
These three sessions will provide a look at the past and the present of the Cyprus problem, which has been affecting international relations and the lives of many people for three generations. We'll explore as well some of the perspectives of Cypriot youth for the future of their country. We will start with an analysis of the Cyprus problem - the interests at stake, the major powers involved, and the events which led to the division of the island in 1974. We will then look at the quickly-growing grassroots peace-building movement on the Island. The series concludes with a forum, "The Future of Cyprus: Perspectives of the Cypriot Youth," featuring Greek and Turkish Cypriot students of different backgrounds discussing their visions for the future of Cyprus.

CYPRUS HISTORY
During the 12th and 11th centuries B.C. Achaean Greeks come to settle on the island bringing with them the Greek language, their religion, their customs. They build new cities like Paphos, Salamis, Kition. The 8th century B.C. is a period of great prosperity but the island falls prey to several conquerors. Cypriot Kingdoms try to preserve their independence but come under the domination of Assyria and then Egypt and Persia. King Evagoras of Salamis (who ruled from 411-374 BC) rebels against Persia and unifies the island but, after a great siege has to conclude peace with Persia and loses control of the whole island. In 333 BC Alexander the Great defeats Persia and Cyprus becomes part of his empire. After Alexander's death Cyprus comes under the Hellenistic state of the Ptolemies of Egypt, and belongs from now onwards to the Greek Alexandrine world. The capital is now Paphos. This is a period of wealth for Cyprus. In 358 BC Cyprus becomes part of the Roman Empire. During the missionary journeys by Saints Paul and Barnabas, Cyprus becomes the first country to be governed by Christian. Destructive earthquakes occur during the 1st century B.C. and the 1at A.D. and cities are rebuilt. After the division of the Roman Empire in two parts 330 A.D., Cyprus comes under the Hellenic empire of Byzantium known as Eastern Roman Empire, with Constantinople as its capital. Constantine the Great's mother, Helena is said to have stopped in Cyprus on her journey from the Holy Land, with remnants of the Holy Cross and founded the monastery of Stavrovouni. More earthquakes during the 4th century A.D. completely destroy the main cities. Cities lose their splendor and remain in ruins. New cities arise, Constantia is now the capital, and large basilicas are built as from the 4-5th century A.D. In 647 Arabs invade the island. In 688 Emperor Justinian II and Caliph al-Malik sign a treaty neutralizing Cyprus, but violations are reported, and the island is also attacked by pirates until 965 when Emperor Nicephoros Phocas expels Arabs from Asia Minor and Cyprus.

The people say “scratch the soil anywhere and you will find traces of the island’s ancient civilisations”! Each year new excavations are undertaken by local and international archaeologists, bringing to light new finds and increasing our knowledge about the Neolithic Period (7000 BC) which developed along the north and south coasts. During the Chalcolithic Age, the transitional period between the Stone and Bronze Age, people seemed to settle in the west of Cyprus. In the Bronze Age we see waves of Achaean Greeks arriving to settle, spreading the Greek language, religion and culture. In the 8 th century Cyprus became a Greek island of 10 city kingdoms, the cult of the goddess Aphrodite flourished and times ere prosperous. During the Archaic and Classical Period the island fell to more than one band of conquerors. Assyria, Egypt and Persia sent Invaders. Then King Evagoras of Salamis unified the land. Later Alexander the Great was welcomed by the island's city-kingdoms and Cyprus became part of his empire.

Cyprus
History
Excavations have proved the existence of a Neolithic culture on Cyprus in the period from 6000 B.C. to 3000 B.C. Contact with the Middle East and, after 1500 B.C. , with Greece greatly influenced Cypriot civilization. Phoenicians settled on the island c.800 B.C. Cyprus subsequently fell under Assyrian, Egyptian, and Persian rule. Alexander the Great conquered it in 333 B.C. , after which the island again became an Egyptian dependency until its annexation by Rome in 58 B.C. Ancient Cyprus was a center of the cult of Aphrodite. After A.D. 395, Cyprus was ruled by the Byzantines until 1191, when Richard I of England conquered it. In 1192, Richard bestowed the island on Guy of Lusignan . In 1489, Cyprus was annexed by Venice. The Turks conquered it in 1571. At the Congress of Berlin (1878) the Ottoman Empire placed Cyprus under British administration, and in 1914, Britain annexed it outright. Under British rule the movement among the Greek Cypriot population for union ( enosis ) with Greece was a constant source of tension. In 1955 a Greek Cypriot organization (EOKA), led by Col. George Grivas, launched a campaign of widespread terrorism. Tension and terror mounted, especially after British authorities deported (1956)

Photos Links It is not possible to say when first inhabitants of Cyprus lived, but it is believed possible that as long ago as 8.500 B.C. there were settlements on Cyprus.
Cyprus has had many names, but the name we use now is believed to have come from the word copper of which there was, and possibly still is, an abundance of on the island. An alternative theory is that its name comes from the word Kypros (the Greek for henna) of which there was also abundance. No one knows for sure. Cyprus has had a troubled history. The abundance of copper, timber, and the strategic location between East and West resulted in repeated invasions, changes of rulers, and strife for the inhabitants.

Learn about the Turkish invasion In Cyprus
REFUGEES In occupying the north of the island, Turkey forcibly expelled the Greek Cypriots living there, who constituted about 80% of the indigenous population.
Some 200.000 people, making up one third of the entire population of the island, fleeing from the Turkish invading forces, streamed into the government-controlled area, homeless and destitute. Most of them had to sleep in the open for several weeks before they were given shelter in tented camps.
With the passage of time, and thanks to international aid, the housing problem of the refugees was overcome. However, their demand for their basic human rights to be respected and for them to be allowed to return to their homes remains unrequited.
The European Commission of Human Rights of the Council of Europe in its report adopted on 10 July 1976 found Turkey responsible for the eviction of the Greek Cypriots from their homes, for its refusal to allow their return to their homes and for the looting and deprivation of their possessions.
More recently in July 1989, a Kyrenia refugee, Mrs Titina Loizidou, brought a case before the European Court of Human Rights against Turkey alleging violation of her right to "peacefully enjoy" her property in Kyrenia, which is situated in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus.
