    Elections in the Czech Republic
Prime Minister Vaclav Klaus's Civic Democratic Party (ODS) lost ground in the Czech parliament last weekend, as voters scattered their votes among six political parties. The reformist, center-right ODS did finish first, winning just over 29 percent of the votes and 68 seats in the lower house. In second place was the Czech Social Democratic Party (CSSD), with 61 seats. The most notable gain was made by the ultra-right Czech Republican Party (SPR-RSC), led by the brashly outspoken Miroslav Sladek. The SPR-RSC finished in a tie for fourth position in the parliament with 18 seats. With the parliamentary delegation fragmented and the two largest parties divided on numerous political issues, it may be difficult for Klaus or anyone to forge a coalition government. Reports and analysis of current political news from the Czech Republic are regularly available from Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty online, a site rated 2 stars by McKinley's Magellan Internet Guide . Cookbook Author Peter Trnka's The Best of Czech Cooking , Hippocrene Books, 2001
Adapted by StarChefs Yield: 6 Servings These dumplings are a traditional part of Czech cooking and, if made well, is one of the most delicious ways to soak up sauce. Flour and cubed bread are combined to make large, loaf-like dumplings, which are then boiled and sliced with a thread. The lightness of the dumplings in part depends on the type of flour that is used. A rougher rather than smoother flour is desired. If you can get it, "Wondra" brand is a good bet. Otherwise, mix together equal quantities of regular white flour and semolina.
    • 3 cups white flour 3 cups semolina 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 whole egg 1/2 cup milk 1 teaspoon salt plus more for boiling 1/2 loaf French bread, cubed

The author, Peter Trnka , February 26, 2000 the forgotten pig, mushrooms, and other new things A couple of months after my Best of Czech Cooking had been published it dawned upon me rather rapidly that the book was missing the pork chapter. A frenetic search revealed only an incomplete computer version. The pig had been forgotten. Other less significant slips have surfaced since and so it is with pleasure that I await publication of the second, expanded, and improved edition. The pig is back, as are a youthful fascination with mushrooms and an ubiquitous concern with drinks. The new edition has three new chapters and other new recipes, especially game dishes. It may also have photos and a brief account of a dinner with a philosopher. Some of these things, including the next big slip, I have yet to know. Customer Reviews Avg. Customer Review:

Here, please find several names of several restaurants; you have the choice in Prague ! Of course, here is just a selection and I’m sure you will discover much more ! I know many of them and I think that’s really a good selection of nice restaurants.
    Prices
The prices don't necessarily relate to atmosphere or the quality of the food. It is possible to have an excellent dinner in a mid-range restaurant, on the other hand it is easy to pay a relatively high price for an average meal close to a tourist site. If you have ordered from a menu without prices, ask beforehand how much the dishes will cost. When weights (100 or 150 g) are given for fish or meat, the price quoted is for that weight. If the item served weights two or three times more than the cost will be much higher. Tipping is not mandatory, but it's general practice to round up the bill to a reasonable amount or tip ten per cent (unless the service was awful).

    Where to eat ?

The national Czech dish is roast pork, sauerkraut and dumplings. Another speciality is goulash, often served with dumplings. The main meal of the day is eaten around noon. It usually consists of meat and dumplings, potatoes or rice, and soup. In addition to a simple breakfast and evening meal, Czechs enjoy a snack (svacina) at about 10 am. Tea is the most common beverage.
However, Czech beer is famous worldwide. The best-known brands are Pilsner (Plzenske) and Budweiser (Budvar), but just as good are Radegast, Staropramen and Velkopopovicky Kozel. The favorite aperitif is Becherovka, a Czech-invented liqueur, potently herbal and touted as having medicinal qualities. Plum brandy (slivovice) is popular.
    CHOOSING A RESTAURANT OR CAFÉ
Dining in Prague is relatively inexpensive by west European standards. The average price listed below includes an appetizer and a main meal with accompanying side dish, but not a dessert or drinks. The average price doesn't necessarily relate to atmosphere or the quality of food.

    > Tasting Prague Tasting Prague There's a delicious revolution in food and wine going on in central Europe's most delightful capital Posted: Wednesday, July 31, 2002 By John Mariani The dining room of Prazské Selátko Few would disagree that Prague is one of the more beautiful cities in central Europe. Straddling both sides of the Vltava River, it is home to some of the region's most stunning architecture everything from Cubist buildings to Gothic spires to a wild Frank Gehry office building. Miraculously, Prague appears largely untouched by the ravages of war and Soviet oppression, and it has emerged like an antique toy village found carefully preserved in a box in the attic, unwrapped for everyone's delight. It's no wonder that tourists have poured in, fueling a vibrant street life and supporting scores of restaurants. New eateries have opened on every block on both sides of the river, from the Old Town (Staré Mesto) to the New Town (Nové Mesto). The beautiful Old Town Hall is surrounded by a plaza with outdoor cafés, bistros, beer halls and pizzerias that teems with people in good weather. The plaza's best seats are those that have a view of the hourly parade of carved folk-figures that appear out of the wondrous and still-working 15th century Astronomical Clock. Prague has no lack of fast-food restaurants American and otherwise and pastry and tea shops. There are plenty of good traditional Czech and Bohemian restaurants, too, places where the decor and menus, even during the Soviet regime, have never varied. While young Czechs seem to prefer the trendier Italian restaurants and French bistros, the old-fashioned places have plenty of charm and are well-worth visiting. Some are quite lovingly decorated, including the popular, rather upscale U Modré Kachnicky (The Blue Duckling), set in a Renaissance-era home with vaulted ceilings and murals that were painted by the artistic owners. Klásterní Vinárna is located in a former Ursuline convent, built in the 17th century. Some, such as Novomestsky Pivovar and Pivovarsky Dûm, are very casual brew pubs.

AMERICAN CZECH-SLOVAK CULTURAL CLUB: GOOSE FAT AND GARLIC...YUM!
An article by Damarys Ocana published in
Street Miami , a Miami Herald publication, Feb 1-7, 2002. Make a turn at the railroad tracks off 135th Street and Arch Creek Road in North Miami, and you're in a different world the Old World, to be precise. A shady forest surrounds what looks-like a European country cottage out of a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, with painted window boxes brimming with flowers. By the time you leave, you feel nurtured and loved, and you immediately want to take a nap. It's actually the American Czech-Slovak Cultural Club , a lonely repository of Slavic culture for many miles, which has made heroic efforts to stay open through the years ("All the members were dying off," notes one member), and where every Sunday people of all ages, members or not, come from as far away as Palm Beach to eat a typically Czech dinner and drink lots of beer. It may not be family owned, but once they arrive, diners are welcomed like long-lost prodigal sons and daughters.

By Nicole Rosenleaf Ritter and Mark Preskett T e early 1990s were a time when any American, Canadian,
Brit, or Australian could arrive in Prague and have a dirt-cheap flat and an outsized income by lunchtime. They worked when they wanted during the day and partied all night on 10-cent beer. Finding a job in Prague that you can live on is no longer so easy.
In any given week, 95 percent of the jobs listed in The Prague Post are for English teaching positions. While finding a position without a TEFL certificate is not difficult, the training will help you to know what to do on that first day in front of a new class.
Teaching private classes can be more lucrative, but it will be difficult to get your residency permit without an actual employer to back you up. If you do work illegally, just be sure you cross a border before your tourist visa expires.

By Dean Vuletic Listen 16kb/s 32kb/s Czech cuisine may not have the international reputation of its French, Italian or Japanese counterparts, but I wonder if that is just because it has not had the opportunity to flaunt itself on the international stage. While some may snigger, I have to admit that I quite enjoy Czech food, and I would be quite pleased to see my favourite Czech dishes readily available in London, New York, Paris, Sydney and Tokyo. If some entrepreneur out there is keen to take on my idea and bring the wonders of Czech cuisine to the world, I can even recommend the ideal model to follow. It's called Ceska kuchyne, which in English translates as "The Czech Kitchen." Located in Prague's Old Town between its two most famous squares - Wenceslas and Old Town squares - Ceska kuchyne feeds anyone searching for a decent Czech meal at a reasonable price.
