The Czechs are a plain-spoken, even-tempered people, revealing a spectrum of cultural, religious and political influences that is surprisingly broad for such a small country - German and Austrian to Polish and Hungarian, liberal to deeply traditional, global-thinking to fiercely nationalistic. The largest church is the Roman Catholic Church, though in 1991 fewer than 40% of Czechs called themselves Catholics, and even fewer attend church regularly. The next largest church is the Hussite Church and there are numerous other Protestant denominations, the largest being the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren. Prague has the largest Jewish community in the republic, with about 6000 members; smaller enclaves are in Ostrava and Brno. From the New World , composed in the USA while lecturing there. Czech jazz musicians were at the forefront of European jazz after WW II but this came to an end with the communist putsch. Keyboardist Jan Hamr, who escaped to the USA, became prominent in 1970s American jazz-rock under the name Jan Hammer. Since the Velvet Revolution, the jazz scene in Prague has been especially lively. The grim industrial north, particularly Teplice, is the hub of the Czech Republic's punk movement. The most famous Czech writer is undoubtedly Franz Kafka, who, with a circle of other German-speaking Jewish writers in Prague, played a major role in the literary scene at the beginning of this century. Internationally renowned 'modern' Czech novelists include Milan Kundera, Ivan Klima and Josef Skvorecky. Much less well-known is the Czech poet Jaroslav Siefert, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1984. The playwright Vaclav Havel now operates on a somewhat larger stage.

Czech Republic Culture -
Tourist Information It is possible that the saying "If they’re Czech they’re a musician" is these days a little out of date. However, the Czech musical tradition is thriving to this day. Musical festivals are held around the entire country from spring through to autumn. One of the most prestigious is the Prague Spring international musical festival (concerts, operas), Prague Autumn (concerts), and the international music festival in Cesky Krumlov. Chamber music resounds around the walls of the baroque and gothic churches and cloisters. Smaller music festivals named after the great names of Czech music are held in their birth places or in spa towns: Smetana (Litomysl), Dvorak (Nelahozeves, Sychrov and Karlovy Vary), Martinu (Prague and Policka), and Janacek (Hukvaldy). The Chopin Piano Festival in Marianske Lazne, the Ema Destinova festival in Ceske Budejovice, and the Moravian Autumn Festival in Brno also belong to this tradition. The ears and hearts of listeners are not only treated to classical music – Prague is also the setting of a Jazz Festival. Lovers of light music have other possibilities – in Prague every year in February European carnival musicians get together, and groups of wind instruments traditionally perform at the festival in Kmochs’ Kolin. In many towns and villages summer is above all a time for colourful folk celebrations, fairs, and carnivals with music, dance and traditional delicacies. The best known examples of these events are to be found in Straznice, Vlcnov and Domazlice (the Chod festivities). For a completely different character try the Dance Prague festival and the international film festival in Karlovy Vary.

Czech cuisine is basically central European, with German, Hungarian and Polish influences. Meat is a huge feature, along with big portions of dumplings, potatoes or rice topped with a thick sauce, and a heavily cooked vegetable or sauerkraut; the standard quick meal is knedlo-zelo-vepro (dumplings, sauerkraut and roast pork). Caraway seed, bacon and lots of salt are the common flavourings. Vegetarians and cholesterol sufferers beware!

Czech Republic - Prague is the capital and largest city of Czech Republic. The Czech people are descended from Slavic tribes who arrived in Bohemia and Moravia in the 5th century AD. The Czechs are the country's dominant ethnic group, representing about 94 percent of the population; Slovaks account for about 3 percent; and Poles, Germans, Roma (Gypsies), and Hungarians comprise most of the remainder. top
    Czech Republic Brief History
Czech Republic was ruled by a Communist regime from 1948 to 1989 . In November 1989 the Communist government was ousted and Czechoslovakia again became a democratic state. The new state, a democratic republic known as Czechoslovakia, was broken up during World War II, but was reestablished at the end of the war in 1945. . During the early 1990s, political and economic conflicts developed between the Czechs and Slovaks, and leaders of both groups decided to dissolve the republic. In January 1993 Czechoslovakia was replaced by two independent states, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. top

Prince Charles of Wales Czechoslovakia's main cultural achievements took place primarily in the Middle Ages and after the 18th century. In the intervening three centuries, control by Germans resulted in the suppression of native achievement and forced many artists, musicians, and philosophers to live abroad. The 14th century laid the basis for a national style in painting. The 19th century witnessed a revival and further development of painting, music, and sculpture. The National Theatre in Prague (1883) and the Bratislava National Theatre are also held in high regard throughout Europe. The 1960's saw a return to prominence of Czechoslovakian films. "The Shop on Main Street", (1966), and "Loves of a Blonde" (1967), won general acclaim in the West. Traditional painting in Czechoslovakia during the 19th century was best exemplified by the works of Josef Mánes. The portrait painter Max vabinský and the sculptor Josef Myslebeck gained recognition around the turn of the 20th century. Josef Drahovský, who sculpted in various media, including glass, achieved prominence after World War I. Later in the 20th century Franticek Kupka achieved a posthumous reputation as one of the pioneers of abstract painting. Czech contribution to music has been of notable international importance. The composer Bedrich Smetana is known as the father of Bohemian national music; Antonín Dvorák, who was born in Czechoslovakia, lived and worked in the United States for several years; Leos Janácek is noted for his operas and songs, some of which were based on folk themes.

    12. Development Of Political Culture In The Czech Republic
Emanuel Pecka, a political science professor from Prague, discusses the roots of the democratic movement in the 20th c. Central European state.
    http://fmv.vse.cz/depts/kpol/pecka.htm
Development of Political Culture in the Czech Republic
Emanuel Pecka Emanuel Pecka: Professor of Political Science at University of Economics in Prague. He is the author of works dealing with problems of sociology of politics (Theory of Elites in the U.S.A., American Political Science and Sociology of Politics, Scientific Revolution and Education, Foundations of Sociology of Politics). He recieved his PhD in sociology at Charles University. Abstract: This study focuses on two questions: What are the roots and what are the main features of political culture in the Czech Republic. It stresses the relations between the historical types of social structures and political culture. This paper presents some examples, from empirical research, of political culture 1968-1970, and at the same time some remarks on the right-left division line. In a great number of books and articles devoted to political culture we read that the term "political culture" cannot be defined precisely. On the other hand the same authors find this term useful as a general description of ways of behaving in political culture as not only a term suitable for analysing civic behaviour in the political area. At the same time it includes the real behaviour, the distinctive customs, skills and attitudes, that individuals learn as the shared experience of their political system. These remarks lead us to the following questions: 1. What are the roots of our political culture? 2. What are the main features of political culture in CR? The explanation of development of political culture must be based upon the inquiry of democratic traditions of politics in our country. The democratic state in our territory rose in 1918 as the result of the long-term efforts of Czech politicians. Their activity had its rorigins largely in the ideas of nineteenth century thinkers such as J. Dobrovsky, J. Jungmann, J. Kollar, but above all of F. Palacky. T. G. Masaryk very often cited Palacky's words saying that states develop themselves in spirit of ideas which stood at their birth. The new Czech state introduced democratic parliamentary and human rights into Central Europe. People in the Czechoslovak Republic realized it and many of them were proud of this value; from here love of native country and nationalism.

Membership in any national or ethnic minority should not be a basis of discrimination against any person.
Article 24 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms, which is a part of the Constitution of the Czech Republic.
Of the national minorities living within the Czech Republic, Czechs have the best relations with the Slovaks, with whom 70 percent of respondents get along well. The Roma are held least favorably by Czechs, with only seven percent of those asked expressing good will towards them. At the same time, the attitde of Czechs towards other national minorities has improved slightly. This discovery was brought by the observations of the Institute for the Study of Public Opinion fro November of 1997. The distance between Czech society and the Romani minority is in part due to the fact that the public knows very little about the Roma, and the information they receive from the mass media is often superficial and distorted, and the Romani minority appears in the Czech media most frequently in connection with crime. The Czech public may perhaps be quite surprised then, to see any information about the history, language, craftsmanship and culture of the Roma at all. Therefore, Radio Prague decided last year to present
