Course is taught during the following terms: Autumn Spring Summer Course Description
This course will examine 20th century art from several different perspectives. Historically, it will concentrate on European art in the period between the two World Wars, but it will also explore more general issues concerning ideas of "anti-art", and of an alternative "avant-garde" which challenged modernist notions of artistic autonomy.
We shall begin with various aspects of Dada and its iconoclasm, from Marcel Duchamp's Readymades to Berlin Dada photomontage. Comparisons and contrasts will be drawn with the practices of the Russian Constructivists, and their utopian visions of the integration of artists into society. Surrealism was the major intellectual movement of the inter-war period, and we shall examine its origins and its aims, and its influence on the visual arts. We shall look at these ideas in the context not only of modernism but also of the rise of Totalitarianism and the revival of classical and realist values in art in the 1930s.

In January 1978 an ambitious exhibition entitled 'Dada and Surrealism Reviewed' opened at the Hayward Gallery, London. It was perhaps fitting that the official guide to the show would draw parallels with religious movements rather than painting.
'Dada and Surrealism are not art movements' it began, 'they are not even literary movements with attendant artists. They are religions, with a view of the world, a code of behaviour...'
HE WHO WOULD VALIANT BE
Illustrated books featuring the works of Salvador Dali, Max Ernst and Georgio de Chirico had fired my enthusiasm for painting as a schoolboy. Now it was time to meet my makers. Key periods and geographic locations in the evolution of the two 'schools' were introduced by a wall-montage of relevant material from contemporary books, pamphlets, leaflets, bulletins, catalogues, posters and reviews. What followed was a detailed if not crowded rag-bag of art exhibits and icons, a characteristic of surrealist exhibitions of the past, and of private collections like the one belonging to devoted patron and jazz musician, George Melly.
I nearly didn't make the opening as the snow was so bad. I was still a student at the college of art in Mansfield at the time and travelled by Express coach to Victoria station. I recall wiping condensation from the window with my sleeve to reveal snow-blind shoppers leaning into blizzard conditions, arms flapping like penguins. The weather was always worse in the north of course and the journey proceeded without further delay once we reached Leicester.

These are the cover and contents page for my highschool art folio, this project concentrating on the Surrealists. I chose to study Surrealism in the media, in its' somewhat tamer forms. (Like Amidala's costume in Starwars and the Sorceresses/GF's of Final Fantasy 8). Needless to say, I was going through some kind of FF8 frenzy at the time, and was desparate to tie it into my artwork by any means possible! You can see the pictures I produced of Amidala and the FF8 ladies in the fanart section: "Declomanie Experiment" was also part of this project. You can see the final product, "Ultimecia's Apocalypse Get-Up" in the textiles design section.

Surrealism in art a style in which imagery is based on fantasy and the world of dreamsgrew out of a French literary movement founded during the 1920s. The term surrealist was coined by Guillaume Apollinaire in 1917; the artistic movement, however, came into being only after the French poet Andre BRETON published the first surrealist manifesto, Manifeste du surrealisme, in 1924. In this book Breton suggested that rational thought was repressive to the powers of creativity and imagination and thus inimical to artistic expression. An admirer of Sigmund Freud and his concept of the subconscious, Breton felt that contact with this hidden part of the mind could produce poetic truth. Breton soon recognized the kinship between his literary aims and the artistic aims of certain painters fascinated by Freudian concepts. In 1925, with Breton's encouragement, the first group exhibition of surrealist painting took place in Paris. Among those included were Giorgio de CHIRICO, Max ERNST, Andre MASSON, Joan MIRO, Pablo PICASSO, and Man RAY. The presurrealist paintings of de Chirico, done before 1919, were of particular influence to certain of the surrealists, including Max ERNST, Salvador DALI, Rene MAGRITTE, and Yves TANGUY. These painters developed a dreamlike, or hallucinatory, imagery that was all the more startling for its highly realistic rendering. Other painters, including Miro and Masson, used biomorphic forms and accidental effects that approached abstraction. Their work influenced the beginnings of abstract expressionism in the United States during the 1940s.

Separated Realities , By Mariu Suarez
Diptych - 58"x57" each panel At the opening ceremony of The Art of This Century Museum on 57th St. in Manhattan, Peggy Guggenheim, the founder, was wearing one earring by Yves Tanguy, the surrealist, and another by Alexander Calder, the abstractionist. She explained to her guests that this showed her neutrality in the conflict between the often hostile schools of Abstractionism and Surrealism. That was in 1941, yet soon after, Peggy's gallery and museum became a center for abstract expressionism, under the newly coined term Modernism. Since then, neither the Guggenheim, nor any other major player in the American art establishment, has bothered to show any neutrality. In fact, in 1941, Surrealism was declared dead and has been described as such in all art history books since that time. Therefore, the hundreds of artists working in this style who are originally from, or live in, the United States, have received no attention from critics, galleries or museums. This has left them outside the reach of three generations of Americans who, by and large, are unaware of the work done by surrealists during the second half of the century. Michael S. Bell, a specialist in American Art, researched the surrealist phenomena while he was assistant curator at the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco. His research led him to the conclusion that:

RESEARCH FOCUS
This site will focus on the differences and similarities between Dada and Surrealism. The easily seen difference is that Dada focused on absolutely nothing. There were no rules, just a common understanding to rebel against the war. Surrealism, on the other hand, focused on the importance of dreams. The two movements were sufficiently alike for former Dadaists who joined the Surrealist movement without making dramatic changes in their art work, such as Ernst, Man Ray, and Arp. Arp even said, "I exhibited with the Surrealists because their rebellious attitude towards art and their direct attitude to life were wise, like Dada." While surrealism carried forward with the same political views, it was less anarchic in that it erected rules and principles based on carefully formulated theories.
Following is a list of bibliographic references used in performing research to develop this site.
