Genetic Improvement of Farm Livestock
Genetic improvement is:
  • Permanent – it stays with the animal for life Cumulative – each generation of selection builds on the last Highly cost effective – it has a major impact on reducing the cost and improving the quality of food, which benefits consumers, and on improving the efficiency and competitiveness of livestock production, which benefits producers. Returns worth many millions of pounds are achieved from improvement programmes costing a fraction of this to run. Sustainable – increasingly genetic improvement programmes include animal health and welfare as well as productivity, and are designed to avoid excessive loss of genetic variation
Genetics research and development by SAC and partners has had a major impact in the UK livestock industry, underpinning:
  • Ultrasonic scanning and index selection for meat sheep Design of sire referencing schemes for sheep CT scanning for sheep and pigs Selection indexes for hill sheep National BLUP genetic evaluations for beef cattle Selection indexes for beef cattle Selection indexes for dairy cattle Optimal design of breeding programmes for sheep, beef cattle, dairy cattle, pigs and salmon

Dairy Cattle Breeding
How selective breeding started
Organised selective breeding has a long tradition. It is often traced to Robert Bakewell who, in the 18 th century, hired out his rams to other farmers in his area then toured these farms on horseback, looking at the progeny of his rams. He would scrutinise the lambs and choose the best rams to sire the next generation of lambs – an early example of progeny testing.
What about dairy cattle breeding?
For many years, selective breeding of dairy cattle relied on similar, subjective methods. However, the availability of artificial insemination (AI), milk recording schemes and modern statistical techniques for estimating the genetic merit of livestock has changed dairy cattle breeding dramatically. Thanks to artificial insemination, a bull from anywhere in the world can sire thousands of offspring in many different countries. Instead of riding round the local villages on a horse looking at animals, modern bull breeders scour the world to identify the best bulls and cows to become parents of the next generation. The principle is the same as that employed by previous generations of breeders, but the tools and scope have become sophisticated and global. To sire the next generation of cows, a bull must truly be among the best in the world.

    Introduction
Every dairy producer has cattle that are too fat or too thin for their stage of lactation. Failure to recognize these cows and take action costs dearly for disease treatments, lost milk production, and decreased fertility. This Factsheet describes how to score the body condition of cows and compare them to normal scores for various stages of lactation. The system described here was developed by E.E. Wildman, University of Vermont. Body condition is a reflection of the body fat reserves carried by the animal. These reserves can be used by the cow in periods when she is unable to eat enough to satisfy her energy needs. In high producing cows, this normally happens during early lactation, but it may also happen when cows get sick, are fed poor quality feeds, or feed intake is restricted. After a period of weight loss, cows should be fed more than their requirements to restore normal body condition.

    Raising Cattle And Other Livestock
Cattle are among the most important of farm animals. They are used for meat, milk, leather, medicine and more. Beef by-products enable us to use 99% of every beef animal. In some countries, cattle are still a main source of power for plows, carts and wagons. Cattle belong to the ox family along with bison, yak, and water buffalo. Cattle digest their food by bringing it back to the mouth from the second chamber (reticulum) of the four chambered stomach. This food is called a cud. The first stomach chamber is called the paunch.

    COOPERATIVE EXTENSION SERVICE LIVESTOCK PROGRAMS
The Livestock component of the UVI Cooperative Extension Service is divided into four main project areas. Each area strives to provide the farmers of the Virgin Islands with the most accurate and up to date livestock information available.
    Beef Cattle Improvement Program
The beef cattle program of the Cooperative Extension Service focuses on identification and performance testing. It works with all of the cattle farmers in the Virgin Islands from the large purebred Senepol breeder to the small backyard producer. The program operates along the guidelines of the Beef Improvement Federation and assists producers in the identification of animals, weighing of animals and provides selection assistance for replacement animals. The goals of the program are to provide beef cattle farmers with the technology and education necessary for a profitable enterprise. The primary breed of beef cattle in the Virgin Islands is the Senepol . This breed was developed on St. Croix to meet the needs of the tropical beef producer.
The cattle were classified in the 1970's in a cooperative effort between the then College of the Virgin Islands and the original four Senepol farms. The breed has now gone global and can be found on almost every continent. For more information on the Senepol cattle visit the UVI Senepol homepage.
