Column nr.1 1999 G MEANDERING EVOLUTION I n my life time the evolution of the sport has been gradual in many respects, yet amazing in others. Thanks to the advent of space age materials and cutting edge manufacturing, the common man can enjoy the pulse raising power of a four pound rainbow slamming his store bought Royal Coachmen. The legion of contemporary fly fishers now includes a most welcome change, the gentler sex has discovered the Zen like contemplation inherent is very complimentary to their natural gentleness. My article on international super model Karen Graham now running in this webzine is a good case in point. Ms. Graham is also an accomplished guide in upstate New York (see " "). In the coming months many well schooled lady fly fishers will be spotlighted. One aspect of the sport that continues is the number of famous practitioners. In America wealthy industrialists, movie stars, athletes, and those with alittle too much money and free time can be found sipping 25 year old Scotch and tying their own mayflies inside warm and cozy 40 thousand dollar 4 wheel drives! We are lucky to still have among us many grand innovators and gods of the sport. My article on world renowned Walton Powell, one of the most famous Bamboo fly rod makers alive today ( see "

DICTIONARY TAINO INDIGENOUS
PEOPLES OF THE CARIBBEAN
This dictionary of words of the indigenous peoples of caribbean is from the encyclopedia "Clásicos de Puerto Rico, second edition, publisher, Ediciones Latinoamericanas. S.A., 1972" It was compiled by Puerto Rican historian Dr. Cayetano Coll y Toste of the "Real Academia de la Historia." He describes as "vocabulario indo-antillano." It may possibly be the most comprehensive collection of Taino words ever compiled and it is well documented. For the purpose of clarification, Dr. Coll y Toste includes words which have been incorporated into language, but are not Taino. An example is Mabí, which is of African derivation.
I do not know if this encyclopedia is still in print, but I highly reccomend it. If it all can be obtained do it. Aside from the dictionary, Coll y Toste's writing is descriptive, well documened, and wonderful reading. The remainder of the encyclopedia, seven volumes in all, is a treasure of Puerto Rican history and culture.
If I may offer a word of advice. Please do not take this dictionary (or anyone else's work) as "Gospel." Though Dr. Coll y Toste does a fine job, as you will find, many times he disagrees with the findings of others who had previously documented these same words. Most of his disagreements center on spelling and pronunciation, not meaning.

Introduction
Tasks Process ... Conclusion
Introduction As European powers gained a foothold in various regions of the African continent in the nineteenth century, citizens from their respective countries took up the challenge of colonization. What followed was a period of intense competition among European powers for territorial domination and increased tensions among competing European powers as they clashed over protecting their imperialistic acquisitions in Africa, India, the Middle East, and Asia.
Rudyard Kipling Task You are the senior foreign correspondent for the British Times Herald. Even though you and your colleagues have been assigned to the foreign desk in South Africa, you are encouraged to travel throughout the continent of Africa. The year is 1880. You have been in South Africa for two months and now you are ready to begin to fulfill your assignment. The Editor in Chief has assigned you and your colleagues to write a series of feature editorials on Imperialism in Africa. Since it is the job of a newspaper reporter to inform its readers, the Board of Directors of the British Times Herald has given you an unlimited expense account to investigate this controversial topic.

Mendukung masyarakat INDONESIA melawan dehumanisasi dan kerusakan lingkungan yang disebabkan oleh industri tambang, minyak dan gas. The London Declaration · Refuting the unsustainable claims of the mining industry
· Opposing current models of "engagement"
· Demanding full recognition of community rights
We - twenty three representatives of communities and groups affected by mining from Asia-Pacific, Africa, India, South and North America - met in London from May 18-23rd 2001, to compare the impacts of mining on the lives of communities and ecosystems and to share strategies on how to confront the industry.
London is the minerals capital of world, where a major proportion of global capital investment in mining is raised and the most active metals trading takes place. It is here that the international headquarters of some of the major mining companies are located, and that recent initiatives have been launched, seeking to persuade the "international community" that the minerals industry can continue many of its unacceptable practices. These initiatives include the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development programme (MMSD) which is supported by more than thirty leading mining companies, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the London-based International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). We have seen our peoples suffering for many years from mining in all stages and forms, and from exploration to development through to abandonment. Industrial mining has caused grievous pain and irreparable destruction to our culture, our identities and our very lives. Our traditional lands have been taken, and the wealth seized, without our consent or benefit.

Mendukung masyarakat INDONESIA melawan dehumanisasi dan kerusakan lingkungan yang disebabkan oleh industri tambang, minyak dan gas. INDONESIA SPANYOL STATEMENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL MINING WORKSHOP
Bali-Indonesia, 24-27 May, 2002

We, 74 representatives of communities affected by mining, non-governmental organizations and activists, from 15 countries of Africa, Asia Pacific, Latin America, Europe and North America - have gathered in Bali, from 24 to 27 May, 2002, to tally the impacts of the global mining industry on our communities and ecosystems and to assert, at the occasion of Prepcom IV of the World Summit for Sustainable Development, that mining as we know it today is unsustainable and runs counter to people-oriented development.
Within a context of imperialist globalization, mining, oil and gas has been a threat to the economic and social development of many of our countries and the survival of indigenous peoples and local communities. We therefore make the following demands:
  • a moratorium on all new mines an immediate shutdown of all existing mines where communities demand it a ban on mining oil and gas activities in sensitive ecological and cultural areas including protected areas, small islands, mountaintops, oceans, and in conflict zones
