League of Indigenous Sovereign Nations
A Call to all Native People
by John Dacajewiah Hill
We of the League of Indigenous Sovereign Nations (LISN) of the Western
Hemisphere extend our warmest feelings of solidarity and unity to all
Indigenous Nations of traditional Indian people throughout the
continent.
On October 12, 1992, we have called for a demonstration in front of the United Nations building in New York City from 12 noon to 5 pm at Dag Hammerjold Plaza to demand recognition by the United Nations Security Council that we are sovereign nations. As such, we demand a representative elected by the League to have a voice in the General Assembly, to document any and all atrocities committed against Native

Delegates met in parallel interactive sessions throughout the day to consider: mobilizing knowledge for biodiversity; agriculture, biodiversity, economy and society; local solutions promoting social equity and cultural diversity; developing and investing in biodiversity business; integrating biodiversity science into environment policy and management; and the ecological limits of climate change. Several contact groups also convened to consider budgetary matters and draft resolutions. INTERACTIVE PARALLEL SESSIONS MOBILIZING KNOWLEDGE FOR BIODIVERSITY: Generating, processing and transferring biodiversity knowledge - vital ingredients for conservation: This session, chaired by Joke Waller-Hunter, Director for Environment, OECD, reviewed the ways IUCN and its partners manage knowledge. Participants identified issues relating to IUCN's knowledge management strategy. Presentations included an overview of current practices within IUCN and its Commissions, followed by a description of tools for knowledge sharing: the World Conservation Monitoring Centre's database of Protected Areas; the Environmental Law Information and Learning Programme's online conservation law database (ECOLEX); the Asia Pacific Centre for Environmental Law's education programme; the WWF 'Conservation College'; the SSC Species Information Services (SIS); knowledge management in the Arabic region; the World Resources 2000 Report's communication strategy; knowledge networks as tools for institutional collaboration; and knowledge practices at the World Bank and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

"Our resistance is diverse in content and expression, and we fiercely affirm that it will remain so.
We are rooted in a belief that a desirable, just world is one directly controlled by the people."
  • Paul Hawken's telling of Skeleton Woman
"Skeleton Woman has been brought up from the depths. She has regained her eyes, voice and spirit. She is about in the world and her dreams are different. She imagines a world where children do not live on streets; she believes that the right to self-sufficiency is a human right; she imagines a world where the means to kill people is not a business but a crime, where families do not starve, where fathers can work, where children are never sold, where women cannot be impoverished because they are mothers and not whores. ... Hers are deep dreams from slow time. She is patient. She will not be quiet or flung to sea anytime soon."
  • Leonard Peltier on Globalisation
" Indigenous Peoples of the Americas have been experiencing globalization for over 500 years, and we can tell you from personal experience, that globalization is nothing short of genocide.

Presented by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Christine McCafferty, UK, highlighted the link between sustainable development and access to health and noted that: 350 million couples receptive to using contraception do not have access to contraceptive methods; 585,000 women die in giving childbirth; and 60 million people have been infected with HIV, since the endemic began two decades ago. She stressed that women must be empowered to improve the health of humans and of the environment.
Trevor Manuel, South African Minister of Finance, noted that countries’ population and development levels affect individual's living standards. He observed that income distribution must be addressed and that economic indicators should be adapted to national circumstances. Manuel noted that improving the quality of life is a priority for developing countries and underscored the importance of opening markets and creating sustainable jobs.
