fads Fashion fads of the day In popular dancing, the Jitterbug made it's appearanceat the beginning of the decade. It was the first dance in two centuries
http://pages.ivillage.com/resa526/media.html
Music/Movies /TV/Fashion/Fads Introduction I wasn't born until 1948, the end of this decade. I am however sure, I was affected by everything that happened during that time, either directly or indirectly.
I know that both of my parents loved music. I can remember some old type of victrola, or phonograph as it was called, that my mother played records on and it seems that it actually had an arm on the side that you had to wind up to play the music.
My dad was a dancing fool. He used to date girls based on their ablity to dance. The popular dance was the "jitterbug", which seems to be making a come back. Anyway, my dad told me that when entering dance contests during the depression, that he'd frequently enter the contest with one of his sister's as his partner. They were great dancers too. I understand that he won frequently. This is no surprise to me since he was good at most things he was interested in doing.
I remember both my dad and my husband's dad loving the old big bands. I remember my mother swooning over Perry Commo and sing "When the Moon hits Your Eyes." I can recalling listening to a soap opera on the radio and I think it is one that is still on T.V.
I didn't talk much when I was a kid for some unknown reason but I could sing the jingle that went along with the commercials on T.V. and radio. "I like to go riding with daddy...And he always takes me of course,... We stop for our gas and our oil ,... at the sign of the flying Red Horse!"...Texico...I think! And who could ever forget Howdy Doody and Buffalo Bill or Bob...oh just can't remember for sure....

The little yellow sign that looked like a yellow warning sign. Soon hundreds of messages appeared. Somehow, these were supposed to make you drive safer around cars that had them, but most of the cars I saw with them drove even worse than the average driver. Baton Twirling
The cooler the baton, the cooler you were... they could be filled with water and moving shapes, or tinsel and glitter! Boom Boxes

Remember these? They spawned hundred of lame knock offs. Basically there were suction cups attached to the bottom of the feet and he stuck on the window of your car. Cute at first, until everyone owned them. World Wrestling Federation
Although it has made a comeback in recent years, nothing even compares with the classic years of the WWF, it was so big even my parents knew who Hulk Hogan was. When Demolition wore leather underpants and straps, they looked tough, now they wouldn't look out of place during the Sydney Mardi Gra. That's why the wrestling was sooooo good, big tough blokes making clowns of themselves.

Throughout this book you'll encounter four themes that repeatedly surface and commingle: the pervasiveness of popular culture, the power of nostalgia, the mass appeal of faddishness, and something that makes possible the enjoyment of popular culture, nostalgia, and fads: leisure time-for people did not always have the time (to say nothing of the means) to engage in the kinds of behavior chronicled in these pages. Review from The Harper Perennial:
PANATI'S PARADE OF FADS, FOLLIES, AND MANIAS: The Origins of Our Most Cherished Obsessions
Obsessions take time. As best-selling author Charles Panati writes in the introduction to his collection of passing fancies: "A hundred and fifty years ago, the average work week in the United States was seventy hours." That didn't leave a lot of time for taking care of one's pet rock. But these days, pursuing the latest fashion has become a full-time job.
Panati, who has compiled several other books of arcane facts ("Panati's Extraordinary Origins of Everyday Things," "The Browser's Book of Beginnings"), devotes a chapter to each decade from the Gay '90s to today. We learn that Mary Johnston's 1900 romance novel "To Have and To Hold" was the century's first "blockbuster"; that flagpole sitting originated in the 1920s; that "Kilroy," the graffitti character (as in "Kilroy Was Here"), appeared in the '40s; that the Slinky first slunk in during the '50s. No wonder people were rebelling in the '60s. Look at what was on TV: "Mr. Ed," Andy Griffith and Don Knotts. Still, the more things change, the more they remain the same. Dance crazes may wax and wane, but the desire to dance never does.

Muscle in on a multitude of new exercise options By Paula Harris WITH CHRISTMAS stockings, turkeys, and bellies all suitably stuffed for another year, the next round in the annual ritual is here. Overindulgers everywhere are resolving to coax themselves off the couch. "Shed flab, get fit, feel fantastic" is again the mantra of the moment. The road from pig-out to workout may well be paved with sweat, tears, and garaged treadmills, but there are plenty of fitness alternatives out there. Here are a few local favorites:
Pretzel Logic IN THE '80S, Jane Fonda embodied the ideal when she pulled on her shiny turquoise leotard and urged us to "feel the burn!" These days, multimedia icon Madonna has become the latest exercise "expert" by applying a Vaishnava tilak (sacred Hindu facial marking), donning a sari at the MTV Awards, and touting the Eastern mysticism of Ashtanga power yoga. People are listening. These days, the studio at Santa Rosa's Airport Health Club is humming with rigorous activity. But it's not weightlifting that has the participants grunting and breathless like barefoot Charles Atlasesit's yoga. If you've pegged this exercise as placid and low-key (and perfect for a lazybones like you), think again. Instructor Alexei Brown is working the heck out this group of eager students with his strenuous blend of Hatha and Ashtanga yogas.

    98. History Of Break Dancing
The predecessors of this dance are unusual. It is possible that this dancecomes partially from the lindy hop, and also from the Charleston.
    http://arar.essortment.com/wherefindcanh_riym.htm
    History of break dancing
The term "breakdancing" refers to the breaks in music, and the movements that can be associated with these breaks. It emerged relatively recently, from the Bronx in the 1970's. It became popular with its introduction onto the New York street scene. When a record was changed, or a break in the music of the New York disco scene occurred, dancers would feel the air with movements corresponding to the break. The predecessors of this dance are unusual. It is possible that this dance comes partially from the lindy hop, and also from the Charleston. Several moves are inspired from Kung-fu, and once or two have support actions that are almost balletic. Breakdancing is associated with the streets of New York, and often when competing teams would dance to win, a real fight would break out. Inherent in the term "break" is an element of the dangerous. HTe muscles developed under this kind of dancing are the same used for fighting. The harsh and foolhardy nature of the dance is almost a game of chicken against an assailant. The best breakdancer, in the early 1980's, was often the best fighter or gang member on the street. bodyOffer(29974) A whole genre of dressing is also associated with the breakdancing scene. Breakdancers typically wear low pants, T-shirts and a hat tipped sideways. The dance must be done in sneakers, for the dancer's safety. Breakdancing is known as an especially dangerous sport for several reasons. It is not unusual for a dancer to get something caught, stubbed or stopped while moving in air. This dance is never done on a soft surface. It emphasizes the rough, raw urban feel of fighting. As a consequence, several dancers have broken their necks, and one died notably in 1982, due to a breakdancing move gone wrong.
