Daily Life
in Ancient Greece
How would you have behaved if you had lived in ancient Sparta? (Lie, cheat, steal, because that is the Sparta way!) Or in ancient Athens? Or in Corinth, Argos or Megara? Meet the Greeks! They were a riot! The ancient Greeks were very proud of their city-state ! They were also proud of being Greek. The ancient Greeks were thinkers. They loved to talk. They honored their gods and respected honor. They loved beauty, music, literature, drama, philosophy, politics and art. If you're in a hurry, use the cheat sheet to find just what you need! Welcome to ancient Greece! Cheat Sheet MEET THE GREEKS! Introduction School! Greek Houses ... Food It's around 480 BC.

Didn't find what you needed? Try this! Have a great year! INTRODUCTION:
The earliest Greek civilizations thrived nearly 4,000 years ago.Yet, their culture still impacts our lives today, in the arts, in philosophy, and in science, math, literature and politics. The ancient Greeks were great builders, thinkers, philosophers and military strategists. Here are some of the gifts the ancient Greeks gave to the world:
  • Trial by Jury
  • Greek Myths
  • Democracy
  • Tragedy and Comedy
  • Theatre
  • The Olympics
The ancient Greeks did not have one king or queen. They lived in city-states. Each city-state was a separate political unit. Daily life was somewhat different in the Greek city-state of Athens, for example, than it was in the city-state of Sparta, or even in Corinth!

FDF General Information
The FDF is a Greek Orthodox Youth Ministry under the auspices of the Diocese of San Francisco of the Greek Archdiocese of America. Our primary purpose is to bring youth together in Christian fellowship through Greek folk dance and the related folk arts. Much of our success is due to the unwavering support of His Eminence Metropolitan Anthony. Since 1976, the FDF has hosted a folk dance competition (also referred to as the Festival in this article) serving primarily the parishes in the Western Diocese but also open to dance groups outside the Diocese. Groups from Denver, New Jersey, Florida and Canada have participated in past FDF festivals. An article describing some of the history and future plans of the FDF entitled FDF Coming of Age was recently published in two Greek-American newspapers. In 1999, 8 non-competitive groups participated and 72 groups in eight classifications competed for awards in Ontario, California . This is the fourth year that a new cultural dimension was added to the festival, choral competition. We are proud to announce that more than 25 groups participated in the choral competition, the most we have ever had. In recent years, the FDF has hosted and showcased various Greek cultural groups from Greece and Cyprus at the annual Festival. This year groups from Canberra, Australia and Aradhippou, Cyprus participated. Since 1990, the FDF has sponsored the

Dedicated to the greek culture in dance, costumes, poetry and images.
http://www.annaswebart.com/culture/
My name is Anna Mavromati.
I was born in Hellas, the country mostly known as Greece. Athough I have lived outside Greece for most of my life, my love for my country's beauty and heritage has never diminished.
This site is my effort to share with you what Greece, this ancient country surrounded by the blue waters of the Mediterranean -the reflection of the Greek blue sky- is all about.
It is also the expression of a wish for my children Mark and Christiana: to always remember the beautiful, magic place where their parents come from...
I am inviting you to this journey of discovering my Greece through its poetry, costumes, dances, my family, my art and my feelings.

Traditional greek folk dance group based in London, England.
http://www.philhellenes.cwc.net
Welcome To The
Philhellenes Greek Dancers Home Page The Philhellenes are a London-based group of Greek and English friends brought together by a love of Greek folk dance.Through our performances we aim to preserve the authenticity and spirit of Greek dances and to make them accessible to a wider audience in London and across the country. Since our formation in 1991 we have danced at venues such as the Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican Centre, and the British Museum , at the Truro Eastbourne and Glastonbury international dance festivals, and at numerous charitable events. Our repertoire covers dances from the Greek mainland, the islands, and areas which now form part of Turkey . We perform in traditional costumes, some of them antique, others re-created as close as possible to the originals, and all accessorised with authentic jewellery. One of the aims of our dancers is to work with the children of the Greek community schools to develop their interest in their cultural heritage. In this way, we hope to encourage them to become the next generation of Greek folk dancers. This website will be updated regularly so please keep checking it to see what we are doing. We hope you will one day be able to attend one of our workshops or performances.

Welcome! - Kalos Orisate! This site contains information on Greek folk music, Greek dance, and related folklore. I will be adding and changing information on a regular basis, as the site is always "under construction." I have produced some recordings of Traditional Folk Music for many of the regional Greek folk dances and will list them here along with some information on the dances and songs. I also have dance descriptions available for the Greek dances that I have learned and researched over the years. Feel free to drop in and see what is new:
  • Information on my recordings of Greek folk music
    - This includes .wav files of some of the tracks as well as notes on the music, songs, and dances.

Yiannis Pappayiorgas (John Pappas) has produced three recordings of Greek folk music . There are a total of 34 songs (27 dance types from all over Greece and the islands). The recordings are available in CASSETTE and CD formats and include mainland regional music, island music, and Rebetika. All of the recordings are authentic "old style" music and feature klarino, violi, lavouto, santouri, bouzouki, baglamas and other Greek folk instruments.
