Provides brief overviews of each of the seven forms of indian classical dance. have lived between the 1st and 2nd Century AD. The indian dance forms are based on the instructions in the Natyasastra.
http://www.umich.edu/~hindu/dance/dance1.htm
India offers a number of classical dance forms, each of which can be traced to different parts of the country. Each form represents the culture and ethos of a particular region or a group of people. The most popular classical styles seen on the Indian stage are Bharatanatyam of Tamil Nadu, Kathakali and Mohiniyattam of Kerala, Odissi of Orissa, Kathak of Uttar Pradesh, Kuchipudi of Andhra Pradesh and Manipuri of Manipur. Besides these, there are several semi-classical dances that contribute to the plethora of Indian dances. The common root of all classical dance forms can be traced to Natyasastra, ascribed to Sage Bharata who is believed to have lived between the 1st and 2nd Century AD. The Indian dance forms are based on the instructions in the Natyasastra. It also contains deliberations on the different kind of postures, the mudras or hand formations and their meanings, the kind of emotions and their categorisation, not to mention the kind of attire, the stage, the ornaments and even the audience. All dance forms are thus structured around the nine rasas

My Country : India >> Dance Indian culture today has a distinct identity enlivened through Temple traditions. And with body as a medium of communication, the expression of dance is perhaps the most intricate and developed, yet easily understood forms of it. Indian dance forms associated with the evolution and development of Temple arts speak volumes of the great cultural endeavour. Further all the forms of Indian classical dances are rooted in Natya Shastra. It is said that Brahma, the Creator, created Natya, taking literature from the Rig Veda, song from the Sama Veda, abhinaya or expression from the Yajur Veda and rasa or aesthetic experience from the Atharvana Veda. All dance forms are thus structured around the nine rasas or emotions, hasya (happiness), krodha (anger), bhibasta (disgust), bhaya (fear), shoka (sorrow), viram (courage), karuna (compassion), adbhuta (wonder) and shanta (serenity). All dance forms follow the same hand gestures or hasta mudras for each of these rasas. The dances differ where the local genius has adapted it to local demands and needs. Among the leading forms of classical dance are BharatNatyam Kathakali Kathak Manipuri ... Kuchipudi and Mohiniattam
  • Bharat Natyam , originating in Tamil Nadu , has movements of pure rhythm, rendering a story dramatically in different moods.

Haunting, fullthroated music and vigorous, rhythmic dances in colourful attires - in the harsh deserts of this indian state.
http://www.rajasthandiary.com/rajdiary/music.htm

Harmonious diversity
Musical instruments Folk dances Famous artistes Music and dance are deeply ingrained in the life of Rajasthanis. The cool stillness of the desert after the searing heat of the day and the upsurge of life in the short-lived rainy season or spring are filled with soulful, full-throated music and rhythmic dance.
Harmonious diversity
All the regions of Rajasthan have their distinct folk entertainment. The dance styles differ and so do the songs. Interestingly, even the musical instruments are different. The hilly tracts of central and southern Rajasthan are rich in community entertainments because of the lifestyle of tribes like the Bhils, Meena, Banjaras, Saharias and Garasias. Eastern Rajasthan is fertile and affluent, with plenty of patrons to sustain professional entertainers like the Bhats, Kamads, Bhopas, Kacchi Ghodi dancers and Kathputli (puppeteer). People in the harsh scantily-populated desert areas of Western Rajasthan have very little leisure for merrymaking. Therefore, in this region, entertainment is provided by professional performers like the Bhats, Dholis, Mirasis, Nats, Sargadas and Bhands. Folk traditions and classical forms found royal patronage in Rajasthan. A major school of the sophisticated classical Kathak dance form originated in Jaipur, as did Dhrupad singing. The rulers of Jaisalmer extended patronage to the Manganiyar community.

http://www.ghungaroo.com/gypsydance.html
GYPSY DANCE (Banjara Style) As a people, Gypsies are non-conformists and rebels of conventionalism. Foreigners wherever they go and the target of persecution for hundreds of years. This negative has, on the other hand, created a strength of character and togetherness few can compare. The full spectrum of human emotions is expressed daily in the dramatic life of Gypsies. Gypsies migrated from India about the 10th century a.d. throughout the world for reasons, I would assume, being able to maintain their independence from governments and cultures who dictate their destiny. Freedom from tyranny is the essence of the Gypsy soul. The soul of Gypsies touches us all. We all have one living within us- a fantasy awaiting expression. In non-Gypsy cultures, this fantasy is open to interpretation. The name "Gypsy" is widely used to express the wildest and most perverse feelings. It is probably the most misused term in western cultures. "Gypsy" has become a metaphor for humanity's struggle for expression of passion; but there's a large cultural gap between gypsy and non-gypsies. The root of Gypsy culture is India ; and in almost every country where Gypsies live, the morals and traditions can be traced to India where interpretations of personal freedoms are different. The characterization of "free as a gypsy" in western terms, is expressed through nudity, sexuality, etc.reflecting their personal interpretations. This does not exist in the Banjara Gypsy dance form. On the other hand, these emotions are communicated by an intricate body language, facial expressions and hand gestures. It's a dance which transcends nudity and vanity. It reflects the inner most passions of the soul.
