ASU ArtsBridge Scholar: Laura Ramson Hales Third-grade students share in art experiences including an art inquiry discussion based on a painting of a Navajo girl by artist Shonto Begay and an oil pastel/watercolor painting project in which students learn about the concepts of background, middle ground, and foreground and using color to communicate mood. A clay project using native plants and animals as subject matter reinforces these spatial concepts and complements an ethnobotany project on which the students are working. Students tell a story about their own place in the world through their artwork, learning how other artists use these same concepts and content in their work. Lesson plan Mentor: Mary Stokrocki

Lions are not native to China, but came to the country via the famous Silk Road. Rulers in present-day Iran and Afghanistan sent lions to Chinese emperors as gifts to insure favorable trade. Lions were highly valued and were associated with purity and protection. The lion dance dates back to the Han dynasty (205 B.C.E. to 220 C.E.) and was originally performed during religious festivals. The performance of the Lion Dance is now seen at Chinese New Year parades and other occasions, such as weddings and store openings. The Lion Dance is thought to bring good luck, and is performed to give merchants good fortune in exchange for red envelopes of money ( hongbao Two people skilled in Chinese Boxing or Kung Fu perform the dance. The elaborate footwork, body movements, balance, and agility practiced in Kung Fu are necessary in the Lion Dance. One person controls the large head of the Lion, which can weigh up to 40 pounds with its decorations of bells, fur, painted eyes, and movable jaws and tongue. The other partner controls the cloth-covered bamboo framework of the Lion's body; together they allow the lion to constantly move, crouching down and leaping up. They entertain the crowds by sometimes fighting with lion tamers, being teased with a ball or cabbage, or frolicking with smaller lion figures.

The Math of Dance - Exploring Symmetry, Patterns, and Transformations (Catherine Christie)
    Title
The Math of Dance Summary Unit Summary : The unit looks at the relationship between transformational geometry, symmetry, and patterns in math and dance. Each lesson will introduce one of the mathematical concepts to the students and give them an opportunity to transfer the concept into dance. The students will have a chance each class to create a short piece to present to their peers to discuss mathematical concepts. Subtask 1 Probability of Handshakes : In this lesson, the class will be introduced to the concept of probability by being divided into groups to discover how many different hand shakes they can make with a specific number of people. This will be graphed and placed around the room for the class to see. Uses Rubric 1. Subtask 2 Handshake Dance : After the last lesson which investigated handshakes and how many ways there were to shake hands, this lesson will focus on taking those handshakes and making a "dance" out of them. Patterns in the handshake pattern and elements of dance will be explored.
