Fluffy Morris Dancing
WHAT DOES MORRIS DANCING INVOLVE?
Fluffy Morris Dancing is a popular energetic recreational formation dance for girls aged from approximately 4 years to any age.
It is totally different to the Male Morris Dancers who use hankerchiefs, sticks, flowery hats and dance to an accordian. Fluffy Morris Dancers use taped music of the trainers choice. Some troupes like pop singing music, others off beat, some instrumental, the choice is yours as long as the girls can dance to it (or not in some cases.) Music is played on a variable speed tape recorder, the speed of the tune is again the trainers choice. some like it fast some slow.
Troupes are made up of various sections and are grouped according to age and ability.
BABIES/TOTS
These girls are aged up to 6 years, and there must be 6 girls in a line to form a troupe. Not much is expected of these little ones but they do provide entertainment they can be so funny.
DINKIES
Aged up to 9 years. There must be 8 or 10 girls in a formation depending on which organisation you dance with.

82. The Knots Of May
The Knots of May dance the North West morris tradition, with Garlands sticks. Lancashire Clogs with irons are worn.
http://members.aol.com/suesteven/kom/kom.html
THE KNOTS OF MAY The Knots of May are a woman's Morris team formed in the Autumn of 1974 in Brighton.. From the first, a conscious decision was made to ensure the style of the team would be different from the predominantly male sides. It was decided to concentrate on the dance traditions from the North West of England rather than Cotswold Morris, and the kit was designed to be feminine and reminiscent of the styles of the 1890's. At that time, Lancashire Morris was being danced traditionally; the apron, being similar to those worn by Lancashire Mill girls, was chosen as another link. The first dances in the repertoire were clog dances from Lancashire - look out for the traditional Lancashire clogs that are worn - and shoe dances from Cheshire, performed with garlands or sticks. The sticks were thought to have originally been made from the empty bobbins from the cotton mills, which were decorated at each end with bundles of cotton waste. Since the early years in Brighton, both the team and the repertoire have become drawn from much further afield. Traditional English dances still make up half of the current repertoire, but they have been augmented by other European dances from France, Flanders and Spain. Several dances have been composed more recently, some of which were written especially for the Knots of May. In true folk tradition, some of the traditional material has been modified to suit the style of the team. A Morris side relies heavily on the quality and commitment of it's musicians. Over the years, the Knots of May have been very fortunate to have always had a loyal band ready to play in all weathers. The music comes from a variety of sources but has been selected as being appropriate for the dances. Most of the tunes are traditional, English or European, but three tunes were written by a former musician, Peter Rogan.

Mike's Border Morris Notes
As the Border Fore of the Bassett Street Hounds , these notes are my attempt to summarize our current repertoire. They are intended primarily as memory aids for those who already know the dances, and should not be thought of as definitive descriptions. Of course, you're welcome to try to learn the dances from these notes (I would not have put them on the web otherwise!), but be aware that you'll need to fill in many gaps. Feel free to email me with questions, but your best bet would be to ask someone who knows the dances to run a workshop for you. Good choices in North America would be Debbie Lewis (of MOTley Morris in Boston), or myself ( Mike Miller of the Bassett Street Hounds in Syracuse). A good choice in England would be Andy Anderson (of the Red Stags in Southampton). If you do choose to adopt any of these dances, I'd request that
- 1) You acknowledge the source when teaching the dance.
- 2) You feel free to make changes, rather than slavishly following our notation. (This will allow the dances to evolve.)
- 3) You retain the name, unless you've changed the dance beyond recognition. (This will make it easier to track the lineage of the dances, and will help teams avoid duplication when performing together.)

Hook Eagle Dance Notes
PRETENTIOUS INTRODUCTION
The Hook Eagle "Hook Book" contains notations for dances as performed by the Hook Eagle Morris Men. These were written as notes for our own use. This version of the Hook Book contains what might be called 'public domain' dances - those based on the original 10 or so 'traditional' dances and others that have been taught at workshops open to all and sundry. Since there are so very few 'traditional' Border dances, and since not much was actually recorded about any of them, we have felt quite free to adapt and modify them at will, so don't take these notes as gospel, and feel free to modify them to your own taste! See also A Guide to the HOOK EAGLE DANCES We've started to add some of our own dances as well, so keep your eyes open (17/3/98)

Rupert Brooke, The Soldier England may be a tiny rain-sodden speck off the coast of Northern Europe but she has a unique cultural tradition. The concept of England as a multicultural society is nothing new. We have been one since the Romans came, and it is this very cultural diversity that gives us such a rich and varied heritage. English culture is a living tradition and successive generations of English folk have been proud to embrace their cultural heritage. Such quintessentially English sights as Morris Dancers performing outside a village pub on long summer evenings are testament to this. Many organizations are preserving the past, our goal is to preserve the present. We have embarked on an ongoing project to record as much contemporary English Folk Dance music as possible, to make it as widely available as we can, and to promote the dance-forms wherever the opportunity arises.

Moreton Bay Fig Morris
Performances Booking Information Moreton Bay Fig Morris may seem like an odd-moniker for a folk dance troupe, but this local ensemble has been evoking the medieval village life of merry old England since 1984. The three-part suite of dances in Moreton Bay Fig Morris' medley was performed against a jaunty sonic background of traditional English tunes, played by a small group of folk musicians. During Saturday's pair of performances, the group presented a difficult stick dance, a round of handkerchief dancing, and other vintage styles of English country dancing.

Who are we?
Moreton Bay Fig Morris is San Diego's only performing morris team. We were founded in 1984. Our first practice sessions were held in Balboa Park , near the famous Moreton Bay Fig Tree. This enormous tree is just to the north of the Museum of Natural History and to the east of the Casa del Prado. You'll recognize us by our yellow, green, and blue vests with the team badge on the back, our straw hats, handkerchiefs, and sticks. You can find us simply by listening for the sound of our bells, which you may hear off in the distance, calling you to our celebration. You will often find us in the company of John Barleycorn, our Hobby-horse, whose good-natured cavorting with the children usually elicits peals of laughter. Tradition has it that patting the Hobby-horse on the nose brings good luck. Feeding John Barleycorn a coin or bill guarantees the good luck.

    Group Listings
    How Group Listings Are Organized
All group listing are organized strictly according to the locality (city or town) in which dances are held. If, for instance, the Los Angeles Irish Dancers hold most dances in an Anaheim dance hall, then we list the group under Anaheim , not under Los Angeles , even if most of the dancers live in Los Angeles. In fact, when we discover a group listed in one locality actually hold dances in a different locality, we immediately move their listing to that locality.
    What's Included in Group Listings
All group listings follow exactly the same format and contain the same type of information. Every listing has four sections: 1) The group name. 2) Contact information. 3) A list of regular dances. 4) A list of special events.

"There is something very important to be gained by developing ongoing relationships with certain artists, and Mark's company is fiercely dedicated to education and doing residency work in communitites. Mark Morris is one of those artists who has reached an incredibly creative peak in his career. It's a real privilege to have this kind of relationship with him at a moment when he's clearly a mature artist but still has decades of creativity in him." (Mike Ross, Krannert Center director) Brilliant choreography coupled with live music and virtuoso dancing have gained the Mark Morris Dance Group critical success and rare popularity. People respond to Morris' work because they can see the music and hear the dancing. His great love for these two art forms—music and dance—won him London's 2002 Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance and an invitation to give the key note address at the 2002 annual conference of the American Symphony Orchestra League. It's all serious fun to the volatile dancemaker whose company returns for its third season of performances and Creative Intersection activities. This season, the Mark Morris Dance Group presents:

It is a set of detailed instructions for a number of Cotswold Morris dances (a type of traditional English performance folk dancing) that I wrote when trying to learn them or as reference. I have put them on the WWW lest it is of use or of interest to anyone else. I make no guarantees as to the accuracy (these were all written down from life not from canonical reference books). The notes are very long winded. My much shorter Cotswold Morris Dancing Cheat Sheet , which just contains summaries, might be of more use.

At the age of 24, morris founded the Mark morris dance Group with friends and colleagues. TheMark morris dance Group returned to the US from Belgium in 1991.
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/entertainment/markmorris/biography.html
Mark Morris: A biography Praised as a refreshingly irreverent master, sometimes derided as a gimmicky smart-alec, Mark Morris has earned a reputation as one of the world's leading modern dance choreographers. Dance legend Mikhail Baryshnikov has called Morris "one of the great choreographers of our time." The outrageousness that puts off some is matched by a seriousness that critics say cover the human experience and emotional truth. But his style has irked some, and was not always appreciated. His dancers, derided by some critics as "fat," have challenged the dance world's notions of the body. Still, Morris' reputation as the "bad boy" of modern dance has faded in recent years, amid accolades for Morris' "force of imagination" and ability to mix emotions. Born in 1956, Morris first studied dance in his hometown of Seattle, Washington. He developed an interest in a range of music and dance styles, including folk, classical ballet, and modern, which continue to influence his work. Morris moved from Seattle to New York in 1976, and his early career included performing with several groups, including the Koleda Balkan Dance Ensemble, the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, Hannah Kahn Dance Company, Laura Dean Dancers and Musicians, and the Eliot Feld Ballet. At the age of 24, Morris founded the Mark Morris Dance Group with friends and colleagues. The ensemble first performed in 1980 at New York City's Merce Cunningham Studio. Today, the Mark Morris Dance Group boasts a busy international touring schedule and is considered one of the world's leading dance companies. The Dance Group performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music for the first of 15 seasons in 1984, had its Kennedy Center debut in 1985 and premiered in Europe and on PBS in 1986. In 1988, Morris was named director of dance at Brussels' Theatre Royal de la Monnaie as the Dance Group was invited for a three-year stint as the national dance company of Belgium.
